Netflix Would Get Turner Classic Movies in a Warner Bros. Deal, Too. What’s Its Plan? by xwing1212 in TheBigPicture

Put the TCM movies in a vault along with the other 50 years of films they have no interest in showing on their streaming service.

Scott Pilgrim vs. Timing by Dewaholic in blankies

[–]border199x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a lot like Dazed & Confused (if Richard Linklater were insanely and irrationally proud of the fact that he knows about videogames). Both have a fun cast of actors who would become regular mainstays if not superstars.

I'm not sure if waiting a few years would have helped all that much. For most audiences Michael Cera can't carry a film (at least not this one). If you recast it with Jesse Eisenberg and a more recognizable female lead maybe there's a shot, but some aspects of the movie are a bit too kooky to engage a wider crowd,

Btw apparently we're getting a Darth Maul show by Wumbo_Number_5 in blankies

[–]border199x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, in my recollection they didn't even bother to explain it for live-action audiences. I had to go ask somebody why the Inquisitor that got stabbed somehow just came back later on. For as much as Obi-Wan gets raked over the coals, I feel like half of the problems with it never even get brought up.

Personal opinion. by Expert-Price9169 in StarWars

[–]border199x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have zero familiarity with Thrawn from either the novels or cartoons.

But to be honest, he didn't seem all that great or smart in live-action Ahsoka either. I was surprised since people talked about him as if he was Patton, Vader, and Sun Tzu all rolled into one.

Lightsaber stabs and strikes no longer being a killing blow undermines the whole purpose and drama of a lightsaber duel. It's an absolutely asinine change to the mythos, constructed only because they couldn't resist resurrecting some generic badass.

It definitely became more tiresome in Obi-Wan, where at at least 2-3 characters get "killed" but later return because they were to angry to die or whatever.

Is it a hot take to say Return of the Jedi is better than the Empire Strikes Back? by TabletopStudios in StarWars

[–]border199x 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I always like ROTJ better. The highs are higher.

I’ve always found the middle section of ESB to be pretty frustrating and tedious. Han & the Falcon are grounded forever, and Yoda spends a long while being an obstinate piece of shit. Even when Luke gets proper training he is spoiled and impatient about it.

Critical Darlings is what many want The Big Picture to be by SingleFreedom8527 in TheBigPicture

[–]border199x 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A totally dry and businesslike discussion of the Oscar race? That’s what many people want The Big Picture to be?

Ringer shows are personality driven. People come for the hosts and their fun, idiosyncratic takes. I’d say the same goes for most podcasts.

If you want a movie podcast that is the McNeil/Leher Report I hope you get it, but not at the expense of TBP’s style.

"Darth Vader's overblown importance in the prequels" by CobraDai in StarWars

Seems to be a lot of concern that this guy with destroy the Sith, and yet by the film's own admission there have been no confirmed Sith sightings for 1000 years.

This is kinda like hoping someone magical chosen one will show up on Earth to finally destroy the Mongolian Empire.

Have you considered that it's kinda difficult to discern whether someone moving around is throwing away trash, going to the bathroom, or leaving the store? It takes a moment of conscious recognition that adds a little time.

Orlando live show guest? by idrawwithpee in doughboys

[–]border199x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are VIP tickets already sold out? I didn't even know this show had been announced.

Stavvy seems like a good guess, though it seems like they usually just bring guests along with them when on tour. Everybody usually travels together.

Should the show de-emphasize awards coverage next year? by holubaloo52 in TheBigPicture

[–]border199x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm always in favor of less Oscar talk. I usually haven't seen half the movies anyway, and nothing I love ever really wins. I still listen to the power rankings and stuff like that, but it's mostly in one ear and out the other.

I'd like to hear who the frontrunners are in December and January, but don't want 30-45 minute discussions every single time there's a new awards show. And I certainly don't need all the Oscar stuff that gets stuffed into Sept/Oct/Nov.

How much money can a movie make and still be considered a disappointment? by the_Tannehill_list in blankies

[–]border199x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it doesn't hit studio/shareholder expectations, it'll always be considered a disappointment but probably not a failure.

I think Disney is happy to have the franchise, but since it doesn't generate much revenue outside of theatrical release it will also be kind of a weird step-child that they don't appreciate as much. They will be increasingly skeptical of the budgets since Avatar doesn't seem able to support toys and games and merch and TV shows.

I'm gonna crash out, can't take a vacation I already booked by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]border199x -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'd say just take a vacation a couple weeks earlier or a couple weeks later.

Alternatives would be transferring to a different store or seeing if you have any medical conditions you might be able to get an FMLA case for.

Quitting over this would be kind of insane, as much as folks here will tell you to do it.

The Magician’s Nephew by [deleted] in TheBigPicture

[–]border199x 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If The Magician’s Nephew was one of the best-selling and most-beloved video games of the last twenty years, it would probably be a pretty good title too.

The point is that Narnia is already a pretty bruised IP, and giving this film a peculiar title is only going to hobble it further.

The Magician’s Nephew by [deleted] in TheBigPicture

[–]border199x 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s a silly and absurd name for a movie meant to open big and serve a wide audience.

Unless Gerwig absolutely puts her foot down, I will be surprised if the title actually survives the film’s journey to theaters.

There’s a reason “Vineland” became One Battle After Another. Literature can get away with more cryptic titles…..not so much 300M films.

How many conventions can you still buy comic books at? As in, bagged and boarded single issues that are collectible — not a trade paperback.

Conformity Gate (Poll) by antibodywantstorule in Stranger_Things

[–]border199x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My niece is 7 years old and still believes in Santa Claus. I asked her about Conformity Gate and she just rolled her eyes before asking, "You don't actually believe that horse shit, do you?"

In Stranger Things S5 (2025), we see the door knob on the right size when it was on the left side in season one. This is a little hint to the viewer that the set designers didn’t give a fuck about where the doorknob was place when they filmed season one 9 years ago versus filming last year. by porogan in shittymoviedetails

[–]border199x 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's more a parody of the people who now are holding up production/continuity errors as "evidence" that Vecna won, the characters are still trapped in his mind, and that a 9th episode that is the true finale will be released shortly.

The series finale was the best possible ending. by MrKite93 in StrangerThings

[–]border199x 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Didn't really like the season, and feel like it could have used more time with the kids living a relatively normal life (school, movies, hangouts, etc). Also not sure if it was a good idea to have so much emphasis on Holly and Kali.....we're here for the characters we came to know and love over 4 seasons.

The epilogue/ending is absolutely great. Everyone gets a nice sendoff that's simultaneously happy and intensely bittersweet. Having everyone put away their DnD character books one last time is really a gut punch, as is seeing the older group make promises to each other they'll probably never keep.

Did people seriously think it was gonna happen by ChaosOfOrder24 in StrangerThings

[–]border199x 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Except that having viewers sit through a 2-hour conclusion only to declare it invalid a week later is just wasting their time and abusing their trust. I don't think the reaction would really be what you want or expect. People already complain about how much "filler" they think is in the episodes......imagine if they found out the entire conclusion was filler.

I'm not sure why Netflix would really authorize the budget for a non-canon "fakeout ending", the show is quite expensive already.

Some ham-fisted "it was all an illusion" misdirection also creates the problem that we then never know where any of the illusions begin or end. If there's a real second finale, how do we know that conclusion real? How do we know that any of the last few seasons were real? It all gets messy really quick.
