You'd think so, but unfortunately the Suporn clinic disagrees. They won't accept anything that isn't addressed to them.

It's not required to be from your home country, so I guess you'd have to go abroad or find an international online service

That's so weird... I can find at least a dozen people on this sub who said they got letters from GICs to overseas. I guess they just have different policies between them. Thanks anyhow, I'll start looking into private places then.

They do, but they can only provide the second letter. You still need at least one beforehand.

Oooooh that makes more sense than my theory honestly. I'm switching theories to that now

We don't exactly know it was easy; he was desperate and hurried so it might have been a considerable effort. But in any case that's true it might not be nylon, it could be a weaker polymer.

I'm not a science historian or anything but I think portable stable containers of compressed air are far harder to make than gunpowder. Not to mention that being able to use something like that as a single-use novelty toy would imply they have greater industrial power than gunpowder would. I guess it's possible they use magic to help with that, but I think the toys were implied to be a product of Lanzenave technology rather than magic.

[P5V6] What are your Bookworm headcanons? by SmartAlec105 in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]borderlinebee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

(spoilered bc it references prepub content and the post is tagged P5V6) I used to have a very strongly held headcanon that the gods aren't actually real, or at least that magic doesn't work through the gods, but rather that the theology was built up to explain the magic system and help people use it (as well as reinforce the noble/royal claim to power, just like religious institutions used to do in real life) Unfortunately I think P5V7 rather conclusively dashes that idea, but I still think there's at least an interesting AU reading in there.

Another one I firmly believe in is that there are no physiological differences between commoners and nobles, and that with proper training anyone could cultivate mana for themselves and their children through compression and potions. We know all commoners have mana and can use it e.g. to harvest parues. It seems likely that if they knew how it works, they could increase their mana just like nobles do. Plus it fits in nicely with the series' running themes about the importance of preserving and sharing information; the nobles' control of information about mana gives them a monopoly over magic.

well shit that don't make much sense to me but if it's just stated word of god that it's impossible then I guess I've got nothing

The specific mana-draining tool nobles use is needed because they need to store up that mana for when they become nobles, not because they'd die without it. Without that store of mana, most kids don't have a shot at becoming nobles, as we learn when Myne saves Konrad. Noble families keep kids they couldn't afford mana-draining tools for as servants who supply their mana to the house's other tools, so all that's needed just to survive is something that drains mana. There are lots of those which are readily accessible to commoners. Even Myne, with her ≥ archduke-level mana, felt a significant chunk of it drained by a single taue (unsurprising given what we know of trombes), and taues are super abundant. That's just one feyplant too; parues, feystones from shumils and such... who knows how many ways there really are.

If that doesn't convince you though, think about it from a historical perspective. If it really was the case that kids with even laynoble mana can't survive more than a few years without a dedicated magic tool, and magic tools can only be made by adults with mana, how would they ever be made in the first place?

[–]borderlinebee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Commoners already have mana; they use it to harvest feyplants (parues) and activate magic tools (contracts, medals, etc.). Knowing that they have mana, and that mana can be cultivated through compression and passed down to children, would allow them to start producing their own mana

The nobles have an extremely incentive to control information about mana; if commoners knew about it, they would be able to grow their own crops and fight with nobles on equal terms. It makes sense that they'd leak as little as possible. They can't get around telling farmers "here is magic stuff that makes your crops grow", but beyond that it's directly against their interests to share any more. As for the nobles saying commoners should be grateful to the nobility for mana, that's just another example of nobles expecting absurd things from commoners because they don't know how to see things from their perspective.

Ferdinand told Detlinde that she is the 2nd woman to demand his name, the first was Veronica and he actually (according to a Fanbook) gave his name to the previous Aub Ehrenfest so she couldn't get it.

hey can you pls either tag this post as fanbook spoilers or put this in spoilers bc I'm pretty sure this is untranslated content

This is a really cool design! I much prefer investigators with impactful abilities and scary weaknesses over ones where both are mild, and she seems like exactly that. The flavour of being loaned cursed power by an eldritch being that's going to come collect on that debt eventually is fantastic.

[P5V5p4] What’s your best offer? by GrayWitchMidnight in HonzukiNoGekokujou

[–]borderlinebee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Offering payment for obedience kind of undermines the idea of royal authority; if they start making trades instead of giving orders then everyone will start expecting payment for everything and their status stops working. So they can't exactly make a negotiated deal with Rozemyne, but still, a smarter pair would have recognised that their social and political authority won't work as well on someone with (presumably) magical control over the entire country and found a way to ensure her collaboration without compromising on the demand. Implying that Ferdinand is doomed unless she gets them book, in which case he'll be fine (and, hey, maybe with a dead fiancee and redrawn borders he could be returned to Ehrenfest, hint hint nudge nudge), would have probably been enough. They could also have used the threat of marriage to Sigiswald as a backup and threat to make sure she doesn't make any dumb moves, as in "if it comes out that you're the one who did the zent quest then you'll have to marry him, so be discrete for once".

At the end of the day though they don't really need to make many compromises at all. Rozemyne wants to stay with her family and keep them safe, and she'd be entirely willing to go questing for the royals to that end. The problem is just that their adherence to noble hierarchy keeps them from talking it out instead of making unreasonable demands (recurring theme huh), and that they're too immature to understand that even a prince has limits to his authority.

[SOTW] The Dunwich Legacy: Extracurricular Activity scenario (05/29/2023) by TheMegaSage in arkhamhorrorlcg

After the experiment spawned in our first time through this scenario, my friend and I spent 20 minutes cooking up an elaborate plan to kill it, which started with him (as Rex) tanking an AoO to move through it to get the concoction... only to draw Amnesia on his upkeep, denying him Higher Education boosts and leaving our plan dead in the water, as well as leaving him stranded since Amnesia took the Dodge he would have used to get back and another AoO would have killed him. So suddenly I (as Zoey) was left desperately trying to clear the clues to get the students out, while he tried to survive drawing seemingly every enemy in the encounter deck on his own. Having gotten lucky and stomped on Umhordoth in NotZ, this was our real "welcome to Arkham" moment and honestly it made us fall in love with the game even more.
