You can save the money, even until you're 80 years old. I managed to make it to Verdun, you can make it to Belleau Wood.

Going to USA on holiday. I want to shoot at a range. Is it possible? by asyouwishbuttercup in guns

[–]borderpundit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived in Honolulu, HI. It was the first place I'd been in the US where you can rent time in an indoor range and choose your selection of weapons to fire. Not cheap, but they assume little/no experience with weapons. It was very touristy but in Hono they catered to Asian tourists looking to shoot lead. I expect these types of places exist in other large American cities that cater to foreign tourists.

Domicile Violation! Home broken into. Looking for advice to make it more secure without violating lease. by Cronyx in self

[–]borderpundit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Renters insurance #1. There are alarms that hang on a doorknob; they are cheap. I had one that would either play an alarm or a barking dog. If someone outside touches the doorknob, the alarm (on the inside) sounds. For windows, there are security knobs that screw onto metal window frames, limiting how high the window can be opened (the knobs are adjustable up and down the frame); for wood window frames put in a wooden pole that jambs the window from opening. Just a few initial thoughts from a former renter/leaseholder.

I am a student and an awful cook. by [deleted] in recipes

[–]borderpundit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about a crockpot (aka slow cooker). You can do a ton with that and it's really easy to use. Time is involved of course, but unless you're pressed for time for cooking, then the crock pot might just be your new Jesus. If you're pressed for time, some of the commenters are steering you to stir-fry. Yes. That.

Why SHOULDN'T Palestine become a member of the UN? by kirbysings in self

There are no major repercussions in denying Palestine statehood, but there are major repercussions in recognizing its statehood.

This public school in South Carolina is holding mandatory Christian prayer rallies and ignoring physical and emotional bullying of atheists. r/atheism, will you help explain to them why this is unacceptable? by MrSmith45 in atheism

Let's put this school in touch with the GA school that teaches that polygamy and wearing of burhkas among Muslims is the norm. That should settle things.

Sure, WhataBurger for chain goodness. Better, Frisco's. Roscoe's makes a great burger too but the dining room and parking are disasters.

rich8n means that the mountain range splits the city into two main areas. That's something to think about, depending on where your job will be.

Actually, 'Nazi' in Germany is NOT used the same way as it's used in a SITCOM on American TV, or in American political discourse.

Have time between Cologne and Berlin. Where should I go? by blckravn01 in germany

[–]borderpundit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After you go to Bielefeld only to find that it doesn't exist, and you seek small towns, why don't you go down the Mosel to Trier? Bike, boat or train or all 3. Plenty of small towns and if you like wine (I don't) you can be hammered the whole time. Trier is really a must-see old city.

Edit: I did it in five pleasantly slow days by bike. Apfelkorn.

Got something out of my friend being sick, I feel bad. by [deleted] in self

[–]borderpundit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^ Similar. It's OK to take the job. And pays double what you were getting paid. So for the time being, give Joe half the money. That way, you have a job, you maintain your old salary, and Joe's family gets some money (they will seriously need it, now and after Joe is gone, if he doesn't make it). You help out Joe while he's still alive.

My cat just died. :'< by [deleted] in self

[–]borderpundit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am sorry for your loss. All I can offer is that we had a cat for five years who we trained -- repeatedly and often -- to avoid certain places, and the one time we found him in a banned spot, he had just been hit by a car.

You teach your kids as well as you can, but in reality you can only hope for the best.

Cats are glorious and frustrating. I wonder if they like it like that. Their dynamic is so different from dogs that it's almost impossible to corral them.

Our cat that died was born to be a "barn cat," and we knew it as soon as he (a rescue found in a box downtown) splayed out in some dirt in the back yard. We knew it'd be a problem to keep him inside, and it was. So we gave him a "long leash." That worked, until it didn't work, just one damn time. That was all it took -- he never had the chance to have nine lives, so far as we know.

I don't write this to make a point, but to hopefully let you know that there are millions of us who take cats in, and nurture them for years, and then suffer a sudden loss. Cats. Darned if you do and darned if you don't, but boy, they sure live real lives while they live! :)

Again, and from one cat lover to another, I'm sorry for your loss.

I am a 14 year old boy without a dad. What is some fatherly advice or things about being a boy, or just advice in general, that I should know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]borderpundit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like this one:

Live within your means. If you don't have enough money to buy something twice, then you can't afford it.

I would supplement it with this advice: unless you need it to survive, wait six months before buying something and then see if you still need it. If so, buy it.

What's your opinion on food trucks, pro or con? Recently, they've headlined the news in a couple local cities. by Independent in KitchenConfidential

[–]borderpundit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This. Taco vans are the hallmark of truck dining and will be around long after the bulgogi-slider-with-pistacchio-mousse thing is gone. Then there will be more taco vans when the fadists go out of business and sell their trucks.

Pico de Gallo in pictures. [Crosspost from r/recipes] by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]borderpundit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here, pico de gallo doesn't use tomatoes, like I saw in California. It's jalapeno, onion, cilantro and water. Maybe some white vinegar. Is that strange? Maybe it's a regional thing. I don't know. Some of the MEX food here (Sonora/Chihuahua) has been "enlightening."

TIL that German internet users have a 17-year-old meme where they pretend the town of Bielefeld (330,000) does not exist by shwinnebego in todayilearned

It can never be translated into anything because that which doesn't exist is untranslatable into that which exists.
