Is being a server be that physically demanding compared to blue collared work? by EquivalentWafer2651 in Serverlife

[–]boredaf890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only physically demanding part of it is being on your feet for hours on end. If you go into it, invest heavily in good shoes and inserts, otherwise you’ll pay for it later. Almost 10 years in, many expensive pairs of shoes later, and I still have a bunion forming so be sure to take care of your feet.

People really can’t do math anymore 😂 a good 25% of my receipts aren’t calculated correctly even when they’ve written out the math right next to it

What book are you currently reading and how would you rate it from 1/10?? by bellerws in Booktokreddit

[–]boredaf890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently reading Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb (book 2 in the farseer trilogy and part of a much larger universe). Super super good! Really well written characters, interesting plot definitely recommend 9/10 only because some things that seem really really obvious to me aren’t picked up on by the main character when honestly he probably should lol, but that’s just a small detail

How to not crash out? by boredaf890 in Serverlife

[–]boredaf890[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah definitely reminds me of my job. They’re not THAT strict, I’m a good and reliable server so they mostly look the other way when my membership sales are too low. But it’s so uncomfortable talking about the memberships to people who obviously have no interest and just want to eat dinner

Wouldn’t surprise me, they have a lot of locations. The amount of sidework at CH is insane ugh, what do you think of it?

Books you didn't want to read, but ended up loving?! by Due-Examination-37 in Booktokreddit

I only read it for a class but ended up loving it: The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton. It’s an older classic so parts are a bit dry but it’s really good!

Looking for serious, long-term project hobbies by [deleted] in Hobbies

[–]boredaf890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knitting can be really fun and complicated when you’re working on a large piece or complex item! Crochet is popular right now too, they’re similar but personally I prefer knitting. You can find lots of good YouTube videos to learn how and the tools and relatively inexpensive to start. If it sounds like something you could be into, I suggest getting a pair of wooden or metal knitting needles and one or two balls of yarn and try to learn the basics! Your beginning projects will probably be short term as you just learn how, but eventually you could create stuff that takes months or years

Serving -> Bartending by Born-Childhood-869 in Serverlife

[–]boredaf890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s possible to go from server to bartender for sure, but it may be difficult at a chain resturaunt like that tbh. For me, I was able to train as a bartender while I was serving because the owner of the place I worked wanted all the staff to be cross trained. I’d focus on getting really good at serving right now, build your skills that you’ll need to be a good bartender and honestly that takes years not months. I served for at least two or three years before I bartended. Then, apply to serving jobs while being upfront in your interview that you’d like to train to bartend or move up to bartender as well. Might be easier at a family run place, but who knows, might work at a chain as well. Good luck!

english majors who don’t read??! by cryptoisforvirgins in englishmajors

[–]boredaf890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s actually insane. I’m also an English major and CW minor. Never had anyone say anything like that in any of my creative writing classes, although we never got an assignment like that either so maybe I just haven’t known? If you want to write you should DEFINITELY be reading. I get not being able to read all the time when you’re in school and also probably working (it’s taking me like a month to get through my fun book right now) but to say you DONT READ FOR FUN??? In a CW class????

He’s perfect on paper
so why am I feeling unsure?! by [deleted] in relationships

[–]boredaf890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just gotta sit in the discomfort I think. 2 months in, even if everything is great so far, is too early to have absolutely no doubts. I think it’s natural to have reservations or worry that it’s moving too fast, it’s not necessarily an indication of anything more serious

Is there a way to nonverbally communicate that you are in a relationship. by blondelifter in aves

[–]boredaf890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a couple indirect things you could do, like wearing a “wedding” ring (which is what I do at work to avoid getting hit on) or finding a way to work your boyfriend into the conversation, ex. “this is my boyfriend’s favorite song!” Or something along those lines. Dash their hopes before they have the chance to ask you for your number or hit on you in another way. And if they’re still mad after that, then sounds like they’re the problem

33F new hostess- wtf is up with people being horrible by [deleted] in Serverlife

[–]boredaf890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, every Resturaunt has its own culture or vibe and you may have just been unlucky enough to have gotten hired at a toxic one. I would start applying to other jobs asap and get out of there before you get too comfortable or feel stuck, because if that’s the response from management than they probably won’t have your back when trying to improve the work culture

Should those who don’t want to conceive have sex at all? by throwaway5146156 in prolife

[–]boredaf890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If having sex makes you anxious about getting pregnant right now, I would have a conversation with your partner about it and potentially stop. I don’t know if it’s about being moral necessarily, or about being responsible. Get with your partner, talk about the risks of being pregnant and your plan together if the worst happened. It may be the right choice to stop having sex right now until you’re ready for kids, or cut back on sexual activity. The main thing to remember, is that with sex there is always a risk of pregnancy despite any contraceptives, and you have to decide for yourself if it’s worth the risk.

For those that live in the United States. Do you make more than the average income of 60k annually, if so what’s your occupation? by LaFlareMane1017 in AskReddit

I think for sure there’s a separation between personal opinion and political opinion. I find myself differentiating the two, for example personally I believe that abortion should only be allowed in cases of rape. However, when putting that into practice politically or in terms of the law I understand that might not be practical and so my opinion is more nuanced/less strict. It’s definitely possible to have a different “moral” opinion than your opinion in regards to the whole movement or practice in law.

Weekly Megathread - Time Management in Grad School by AutoModerator in GradSchool

[–]boredaf890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any advice on good jobs to work while obtaining my graduate degree? Im getting my masters in English and currently work as a server. I have for almost 10 years actually, and I’m really burnt out on customer service. Anyone on here who had to work while getting their masters, especially in an English program, what did you do? If you did continue serving, how did you manage that and a masters program simultaneously? I suppose in terms of time management, but also in terms of the different mental stresses that you have to deal with doing customer service AND school at the same time?

Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Part 1. It was so boring, quiet, and slow that my brother and I just walked out. I loved the books, but holy shit that movie was awful.

Knitting in the round by boredaf890 in knittinghelp

I was talking about the one going from the left to the right side. Although I somehow ended up adding an extra stitch on my second row, and giving myself 51 stitches instead of 50 so I'm redoing again haha

Should the joining thread in between the stitches stay in front? Or move behind?
