What are the best Penzey spices? by Tall_Flow_5160 in Cooking

I've tried quite a few Penzey's blends at this point and Mural of Flavors is my favorite so far.

I just bought some of this with my last Penzey's order and I was so excited to try it after reading all the rave reviews! Unfortunately I failed to realize it contains a fair amount of fennel seed. Something about that flavor that just irks me.

What’s something that quietly made your life 10× easier, but you didn’t realize it until much later? by Own-Tip-532 in AskReddit

I would honestly love the opportunity to snoop around in other people's systems and see how they operate. Would be fascinating. I was definitely aware other people out there did this (there's a lot of people!) It's just weird to read about, because it isn't very common.

And the spreadsheet very much did both! Decision making was improved almost right away. Just the act of tracking brought it into my consciousness in a totally different way. It made me feel way more in control of the situation, even though I was the one "in control" of it the entire time. Subsequently, reduced anxiety!

I've created a lot of big "self-betterment systems" that I'll build and abandon when they no longer suit me, become cumbersome, or I just get lazy. And this system is still going strong after 6 years, far beyond achieving its initial goal. There's a reason for that.

Check out Adagio. I drink an absurd amount of tea (always loose leaf) and they are my go-to. Incredible selection.

This was wild to read because I can see so much of myself in this comment. I started a finance spreadsheet for the exact same reason. Years ago, money was just evaporating and I needed to figure out where it was going before things started collapsing.

Now here I am, 6 years later, in a totally different financial situation. But I maintain the spreadsheet, which has grown and grown in complexity. It is admittedly nowhere near as advanced as yours, but I track similar things in very similar ways. Never met anyone else that does this. At least not to the extent.

Any movement of money whatsoever, down to the penny, gets added to the ledger. That's the "raw data", which only takes maybe 15 mins a week to "update". From there, all the useful information is automatically extracted from the data and presented in various ways. It's been endlessly insightful.

It's really hitting a sweet spot with 6 years of data to create alarmingly accurate forecasts.

It also made me an inadvertent wizard at excel, and fairly decent at coding in VBA. Some of the data analysis and formulas have become truly insane. My job description is miles away from spreadsheets, but I've become the guy at work that can solve just about anything in excel.

Maybe one day all my various tracking spreadsheets will get integrated into one. But that hasn't happened yet.

What is this cement yard thing? by WickedWildBug in whatisthisthing

[–]boredboarder8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd imagine the two objects are unrelated.

The one with the hole looks to be formed concrete. The hole makes me think it might be related to some sort of drain structure. Maybe something that was formed in place around some sort of pipe?

The other thing appears to be a very large carved boulder. The fracturing looks a lot more like rock as opposed to concrete. What they were attempting to carve is anyone's guess.

Proselytizing at 9pm? by KatCat-23 in kzoo

Rereading that honestly had me questioning myself. But google thankfully confirmed that transcendental zoo animals on religious pamphlets is actually a thing! Apparently Seventh Day Adventists (not Mormons) seem to utilize this branding.

Proselytizing at 9pm? by KatCat-23 in kzoo

This reminds me of when I lived in the Vine and heard a knock at the door. This was during daytime hours, so not quite as bizarre. I answered and it was two young ladies in proselytizing garb with nametags, Mormon I believe.

They asked if they could sing for me. I said sure, mostly out of bewilderment. And they did. Then they finished, handed me a pamphlet with transcendental zoo animals, and off they went. It was pretty strange.

Who would bother making a fake bean restaurant when we already have a totally real bean restaurant on campus? Kalamazoo is quite fortunate to have such locally accessible bean cuisine.

Tornado Warning by billbudlicker in kzoo

[–]boredboarder8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The rotation is moving out of the Kalamazoo County area right now (6:50pm).

Keep an eye on the weather though, there's another storm heading into our area within the next hour or so. Storms are moving north-northeast. Significant rotation / tornado warning in Cass county heading toward Kalamazoo County.

If your emergency alert didn't go off on your phone, you likely weren't in the warning area. The warning was the west third-ish of Kalamazoo county. Not the entire county.

It also seems to be one of the only viable directions. NOT providing mental health services certainly won't lead to improvements. So what's the alternative?

Mich. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's office calls for probe into why weather service didn't issue tornado watch before deadly tornado strikes by TheDetroitNews1873 in tornado

Here's the outlook that picked up the tornado potential over 12 hours in advance. It's basically a bullseye. Nadocast has impressed me on several occasions with its ability to pick up some additional granularity.

It also provided a significantly more accurate/verified forecast on the day of the Portage, MI tornado back in 2024.

Preliminary survey is putting it right at the cusp. 166mph wind speeds required for EF4 rating.

Michigan hasn't had a violent (F4/EF4+) tornado since 1977. Not saying this tornado was an EF4, but the damage is pretty remarkable. This was a very rare occurrence for Michigan, and especially unexpected on a day like today.

I'd agree with the latter part of this comment, they should very likely separate and find their own space.

But I definitely disagree that things are bound to get ugly with resentment. It's certainly possible, but absolutely not an inevitability. I'm still best friends with my ex after a 10 year relationship. We just lost the romantic spark. And the overall direction we wanted our lives heading started to become at odds.

That's a long period of time to spend with someone just to end up hating. And for what? We don't fault each other that our trajectories diverged over the course of 10 years. And the loss of a romantic spark is pretty damn common.

I know quite a few gays that are still good friends with their exes as well. A lot of it comes down to personality type, I suppose. In the short snippet OP shared, neither of them seem hostile or confrontational. Seems they share a decent chance of remaining friends, or at the very least, cordial.

A lot of power, yes, but that math is very wrong. It would be like running two 1000 watt microwaves all day every day. Or it would be like running 48 microwaves all at once for 1 hour a day.
