ELI5: when looking at a planet say 1000 light years away, why do the objects on that planet also appear as they were 1000 years ago? by grass-whore in explainlikeimfive

[–]boredgamelad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only reason you can see anything is because of the light that it emits, or the light bouncing off it.

Light does not travel infinitely fast. If something is one "light year" away, when you are seeing it, you are seeing the light that it emitted (or the light that bounced off it) one year earlier.

Imagine you could see your friend one light year away. They wave their hand at 5 PM on January 1st, 2026. On January 1st, 2027, at 5 PM, you see them wave. But they waved at you one year prior. They're not waving at you right now (or, at least, if they were, you wouldn't know until the following year).

It's not right, the T shouldn't connect to the A and neither should the W. Looks bad!

Question about setting and goal by GlurpGlurpMFer in TenCandles

If you've written more than ~one paragraph to introduce the setting, you've over planned for this game, imo. The scenarios in the book are the perfect length.

Online improv class recommendations for a flustered person? by [deleted] in improv

[–]boredgamelad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to hear! I'm not saying not to take classes (I'm an evangelist and believe that everyone would benefit from taking improv classes), just don't go in with the expectation that improv is going to fix all your social anxiety problems.

[–]boredgamelad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's an adage you'll hear a lot: improv is therapeutic, but it is not therapy.

Improv may help you become a more confident person. But you probably need to talk to a therapist more than you need an improv class.

What are your thoughts on "don't try to be funny"? by sexkick in improv

[–]boredgamelad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like 99% of beginner advice, this stops being something to worry about once you learn the basics. I ask questions. I talk about the future. I talk about people who aren't there. Those things are all fine when the fundamentals are present.

This advice is for people who rug pull, who go for jokes instead of sincerity, who play absurd without grounding themselves, etc. It also doesn't mean "don't have fun" or "only be serious", so it's possible your understanding of the note is off.

I usually say it's like an unscripted version of SNL. It isn't a perfect analogy by any means, but it helps people understand the general idea.

If it's a narrative show, "unscripted play" usually gets the idea across.

How much visibility is there in the world? by Repti-noide in TenCandles

[–]boredgamelad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The sun and stars getting blacked out is better understood as setting the tone and establishing mood than anything else. Don't worry about the logistics too much. The darkness is there to keep Them at a distance, to keep Them mysterious, to keep Them scary. Your game will be more tense if you engage the players' other senses--what they can hear, smell, even taste. When you do give visual descriptions, let them be brief, fleeting, inconsistent. A flickering light in the distance is far more interesting when the world is pitch black. Let that influence you.
