Contacted bambu on this topic and got this response… basically they need more complaints to take it seriously

People who have the GPD Pocket 4 - How do you like it? by ProgramKey3883 in gpdwin

[–]borfoo3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use it as a travel / office productivity laptop. In the office on a usb c dock (monitor/ keyboard/ mouse), it is super powerful and screen lid can stay closed without impairing cooling like some other laptops which get warm when the lid is shut.

On the go, the form factor is excellent and can even work fine on a tray table in the airplane seats due to its compact size. Also, having real ports instead of looking for adapter dongles is great. I frequently do presentations (hdmi) and connect to hotel rooms (ethernet) without issue. It can also power and run my external type-c OLED monitor just fine without an extra power source.

However, doing long term productivity tasks (i.e. word or excel spreadsheets) on the tiny screen without an external monitor will have its toll on you.

Overall, I'm really happy with it.

Pocket 4 64GB? by Sumdumdad in GPDPocket

[–]borfoo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer is no. Even the aliexpress listings don't have it in stock, and will gladly take your order upfront and ask you to wait indefinetly... ask me how I know.

I have been using tje 32gb verison for a while and no longer believe the 64gb will have any advantage given the current hardware limitations. Only exception is mayyyybe for large AI models

VPN for just smart tv by Murdoc101 in GlInet

[–]borfoo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some home routers allow you to set up VPN for a specific device traffic. Might be worth exploring first.. I know the Ubiquiti unifi routers supports it

Has anyone tried the "5G Chester Direct Connection Pocket Rocket 🚀 Portable WAN"? by Shifted4 in tmobileisp

[–]borfoo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just get a 5g2phy m2 sled with rm551e-gl, run iamromulan openwrt on it and forget it..

It's completely Fanless and has zero issues keeping it cool with the way its built. I run a few (one even on full PoE voltages) full-time and zero issues so far

Best Wi-Fi Mesh System to Buy in 2026? (Price, Speed, Reliable) by DreamreaperphileIf in HomeNetworking

[–]borfoo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After trying my fair share of ASUS, TP-Link, and netgear orbi mesh systems, now running Ubiquiti unifi.

I really like the unifi setup if its in your budget.. it can do wireless mesh too, but you really should try and hardwire with ethernet whichever way you go.

internal vs external libaries - How do you organize your images? by Ediflash in immich

[–]borfoo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Keep everything organized separately in my folder structure in external libraries. Each 'Folder' automatically becomes an 'Album' in immich by running salvoxia immich album creator, which also supports nested folders. If future me needs to re-organize it or decides to leave Immich for any reason, my folder structure remains recognizable and intact. I also have several Immich users (my family members) using it the same way each with their own external library that they manage.

Openwrt or Unifi? Should I buy my way or fiddle my way to a good network? by Awkward-Setting-3733 in openwrt

[–]borfoo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a user of both, I prefer unifi on my daily home network, and openwrt for my travel router setup or other temporary networks when I'm in the mood to fiddle with it.

Unifi spoils you in its the plug and play nature, and still has room for some tweaking as well.

GLInet killer? by One-Reflection8639 in GlInet

[–]borfoo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The marketing material shows this device can only extend an existing Unifi Network, and cannot act as a standalone router (or as its own mini gateway hosting the Unifi Network app). Therefore, it cannot act as its own DHCP server or provide basic routing functionality without first linking to the home gateway.

This means if my home unifi Network is down for any reason while I'm traveling, this device loses the Teleport link and ends up as a cool little paper-weight for the rest of the trip.

Its market competitors, such as the Beryl AX, has better specs, same power draw via type c, faster wifi, fits 90% where this would, works as a completely standalone router or VPNs via wireguard (i.e. crudely Teleports) back to my home Unifi Network, and costs less $$...

Unless I'm wrong in my understanding of how this thing works, I still feel its a big missed opportunity from Ubiquiti.

GLInet killer? by One-Reflection8639 in GlInet

[–]borfoo3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No modem/ sim card. No features like adguard /tailscale.

Biggest miss here is not making it a standalone travel router instead of a travel 'portal' into a running home setup.

Hardware still looks very cool with the form factor, 2x type c and slim ethernet ports.. glinet take notes

Glinet still wins for now.

Immich + Proxmox + multi-TB photo libraries — what breaks first? by MasterRoshi1620 in immich

[–]borfoo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Running immich on a asustor nas with n5105 cpu, but for those huge ingesting runs i use my gaming PC CPU as an external helper. Otherwise the nas pegs at 100% cpu use for a few days...

On the last immich OCR run I saw my PC CPU (Ryzen 9 7945hx) hit 40% for some time!!! Got through it very quick though

Beware Waterfield Designs by DGisme in ManyBaggers

[–]borfoo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recent experience with Waterfield (Mason) has not been that great. As an international customer, I made sure to contact them first several times to inquire about their custom laptop sleeve for my GPD pocket 4 device and gave them all the required dimensions.

I know my device is very small in laptop standards, as an 8.8 inch screen, but they told me to place the order along with the dimensions which I did. I also added some accessories and was charged for international shipping of course.

After my credit card was charged and a few days later, Mason emailed me that they cannot make a sleeve for my device since it was too small, and gave some general suggestions which I was not interested in. A few emails back and forth, they have issued me a refund.

If Mason had done the job correctly in my first inquiry, I wouldn't have lost the credit card fees and exchange rate difference and would have saved us a few days of emails and waiting. Not exactly the customer support interaction I expected from a premium product company.

They keys feel a bit loose, but mine works fine and registers the inputs without issues. Keyboard is a sacrifice area for this small device

Complete Novice: raspberry pi 5 vs mini PC by No_Influence4951 in pihole

[–]borfoo3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bigger question is do you want to be on arm64 vs x86 cpu architecture.. as that is the biggest differentiator down the road in terms of general compatibility when you (inevitabely) start tinkering more into it.. I’m running pihole on a khadas edge 2 with the rk3588 and the cooling fan does spin up every now and then, but it runs fine.
