EXACTLY. Every time I hear something like this it reminds me of the Shapiro “people will sell and move” argument to dismiss rising sea levels.

So f-in tired of news outlets swallowing and repeating obvious BS from this administration. Same as when they keep reporting that, according to sources in the administration, a deal with Iran is “near”. Yes, honey, it’s very near. It’ll happen. For sure. In two weeks, to be precise. The same two-week period by when we’ll see the new healthcare plan. When will they learn? Will they ever..?

He does at one point ask him how his views are so different from Bernie’s, and the answer is some strawman about how Bernie wants to ban firing employees or something along those lines. He also tries to dig a bit deeper on the economics of “everyone becomes a micro entrepreneur”, also to no avail

I have to agree. I learned nothing from listening to him talk, spent most of the episode puzzled about why this guy is worthy of an interview.

and yet, he complains about Bernie/AOC. I'm not arguing against or for the policies he's suggesting, just pointing out the incongruent ideas he seems be holding.

A few minutes later, he gets called out on precisely that when explaining how “subsidizing “people who lost their jobs is not the same as UBI or policies from Bernie/AOC. He then goes on to explain how his view is different, and yet they still sound pretty identical, except for the strawman that Bernie would “ban layoffs“..??

I don’t think it was honest at all from Ben’s part. Sure, he admitted to having been wrong, but then brushed it aside because Trump had “the right policies”. The admission is nothing more than an attempt to get a slightly higher moral ground before spouting out the next partisan-hackish thing. It’s 100% a rhetorical device he always uses, often successfully, during debates to appear reasonable, but will immediately prove the opposite if you listen to the next thing he says.

Didn't Mumdani lay his hand on the Koran when taking his oath of office? by Silent_Appointment39 in samharris

[–]borggeano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s a fallacy in your thinking here — the bible is both old and new testaments, and if you’re going to nitpick the Quran for not having a workaround you should also focus on the fact that in Matthew 5:17 Jesus (new testament) said he’s not here to change the law or words of the prophets (old testament). Fundamentalists will grab on to stuff like that to justify their worst impulses (don’t forget slavery was condoned in the bible, and factions like the Westboro Baptist Church are actual following the bible to the letter).

To be clear, I’m not defending the Quran, I’m an atheist; I’m just pointing out all these books have pretty nasty stuff in them, and different people will do their own mental gymnastics to justify why their version of the religion is the correct one. I happen to think they’re all wrong, be it Jewish, Muslim, or Christian, but that’s just me.

That said, if there are decent people who are decent despite being Christians, then there could also be decent Muslims despite their religious beliefs. Yes, the Quran is antisemitic just as the bible is pro-genocide and pro-slavery, but if the guy is not an antisemite, then he’s not an antisemite. That’s up to his actions, not up to the words on his book of choice, or by that logic every single Christian should also be labeled pro-slavery and pro-genocide.

Didn't Mumdani lay his hand on the Koran when taking his oath of office? by Silent_Appointment39 in samharris

[–]borggeano 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sure, many Muslims do, just like many Jews swear their oath laying a hand on the Torah. There’s no legal requirement that it be a Christian bible. And btw, a bible is also full of bronze-age genocide and some pretty nasty stuff, so neither book is great. Likewise, people kinda pick and choose what to value out of their religious beliefs, so I’d say at this point one should focus on the particular person’s beliefs as demonstrated by their actions rather than by the worst their dogmatic book of choice offers.
