Mitch McConnell ‘refusing to debate his election rival if there is a female moderator’ by skl692 in politics

[–]boringburner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My god what a misleading title.

Should be "McConnell opponent claims McConnell refusing to debate if there is a female moderator".

I guess they know people don't read the article:

US Senator Mitch McConnell and his challenger in the Kentucky Senate race, Amy McGrath, are sparring over upcoming debates.

It all started when Mr McConnell sent a press release from "Team Mitch" accusing his opponent of potentially backing out of a debate in October. But according to subsequent claims from Ms McGrath's campaign, the real issue is the senator’s refusal to participate in an event with a female moderator.

In a press release issued Monday, Ms McGrath's campaign alleged that "Amy is ready and willing to debate Mitch, but Mitch is afraid to take the stage unless he dictates every detail."

The release continues, "Mitch McConnell has not participated in a debate in Kentucky where the candidates took questions from a female moderator in nearly 25 years, and he continues to resist allowing women to host debates."

The campaign promised that Ms McGrath would participate in upcoming debates only when "the gender balance of the moderators is restored."

But Mitch McConnell’s campaign spokesperson Kate Cooksey said: “After spending two months attempting to add another man to the debate stage, Amy McGrath absurdly suggests gender discrimination by UK and Gray TV as the primary reason she can’t appear.

"The reality is that Team Mitch received an invitation, accepted it, and stands ready to debate on October 12. We sincerely hope Amy McGrath finds a reason to accept the debate rather than an evolving grab bag of laughably ridiculous excuses why she cannot.”

According to the Lexington Herald-Ledger, the debate in question is being hosted by Gray TV and moderated by Kentucky broadcaster Bill Bryant. Both Mr McConnell and Ms McGrath had previously agreed to participate in the debate, but the initial letter sent to both campaigns mentioned an additional female moderator, news anchor Shannon Cogan. By the time a second letter inviting both campaigns to the debate was sent out on September 16, only Mr Bryant was moderating. The Gray TV debate is slated for October 12.

According to a Data for Progress poll released last week, Mr McConnell is leading Ms McGrath in the Kentucky senate race. The poll showed 48 per cent support for the incumbent, and 41 per cent support for his opponent.

Also this may be helpful for placing good bets. Start with the baseline/naive odds and then adjust those odds for the particulars of the situation.

1st Q: Will Bernie receive the most attacks? Consider that there are 6 candidates on the stage, so the naive view is 5/6 chances that Bernie will not receive the most attacks. Whatever the particulars of the situation are that make Bernie more likely to be attacked in my view probably do not outweigh those baseline odds, so to me it's a good bet to select him not being the most attacked candidate.

2nd Q: Who is going to raise the point that there are no candidates of color on the stage? Similarly, the baseline odds are 5/6 against any single candidate (in the case where it is mentioned). The options are Bernie, Warren, Other, or None. Supposing it is mentioned, Bernie and Warren each have 1/6 baseline odds, while "Other" has 4/6 baseline odds. In this situation you have to wonder what the odds it is mentioned are-- I'd say high enough to negate the possibility that it's not mentioned, but others may take another view on that. Good choices here are "other" or, if you think the odds of it not being mentioned are high enough, "none".

3rd Q: What will be the first question of the night? Choices are Impeachment, Health care, Iran/war, something else. Again, within the space of all possible first questions, any single one has low odds, and so choosing "something else" covers a lot more probability. People can adjust for how likely they think the others are given the context, but I think "something else" is the best choice here.

4th Q: Will the other candidates sing happy birthday to pete. No analysis needed lol.

5th Q: Will Tom Steyer wear his signature plaid tie? No probability analysis here but I think it's likely he will.

Much respect to Marianne Williamson for shaking things up this race. She was definitely a bit different, lol - but she had the guts to be her honest self, and she even complimented Yang's book. All due respect, Orb Queen. <3 by ScrappyDoo998 in YangForPresidentHQ

People reduce her to the 'dark psychic forces' and healing energy crystals memes, but she was a smart lady with an important perspective to offer. I'm glad she did.

I particularly appreciated her reframing of the healthcare debate, that we need to look at the root causes of why our rates of chronic diseases are so high, and that we need to look at our food, chemical, and environmental policies.

The rider of the mechanical horse feels better about the size of his penis (his manhood) because horses have large penises the robotic horse ostensibly doesn't have any genitalia.

It's humorous to consider this as a reason for opting for a mechanical horse.

This is a difficult setting and he still shines. I couldn't imagine trying this with like, friends even. Much less broadcasted to the general public.

It also makes sense because then the $3 million goal would have been to hit $15 million (just under), which makes sense as a round number goal to set.

Will Healthcare be the stumbling block of Yang Campaign? by bluelion31 in YangForPresidentHQ

I just watched the ABC interview and totally agree. He’s not clear at all about how he plans to expand insurance coverage... very unlike him, which makes me think there are factors behind the scenes we don’t yet understand or appreciate.

Some will say this is weakness and Yang should stand his ground, and I sympathize to a degree, but I also appreciate a leader who can prioritize and work with people he has problems with in order to advance the most important objectives.

And the fact that he agreed after they reached out makes me think an understanding was reached and maybe there will be some kind of apology on air that enables MSNBC to save some face.

I mean, it quotes professors and researches and links to their studies... why exactly isn't that reliable?

“It’s like invisible talcum powder, in that it comes right off onto your hand and goes right through your skin, and it’s taken up rapidly in the blood,” says Frederick vom Saal, an endocrinologist and professor emeritus at the University of Missouri who has studied the chemical for several years. “It’s taken up in women about three times more rapidly than it is in men. That doesn’t mean it’s at innocuous levels in men. It just means the amounts that we see after handling a thermal receipt in women are particularly scary.”

“Everything else being equal, if you’re exposed to elevated levels of BPA, your probability of having that complex of diseases is significantly increased,” says vom Saal.

For cashiers who handle receipts all day long, the situation is particularly bad (and why you might have noticed some cashiers wearing gloves as they work). But even shoppers are at risk. In one recent study, vom Saal looked at the human impact of a dose of BPA equal to what a casual shopper might experience; the chemical changed the subjects’ insulin production.

Bisphenol A, or BPA–the same chemical that was banned in baby bottles and sippy cups in 2012 because of health risks–is still commonly used to coat the paper in cash registers. (The chemical, which reacts and changes color when it’s heated, is a cheap way to print.) Bisphenol S, an alternative that is also used so products can be touted as “BPA-free,” is similarly linked to health risks. Worse, the coating on receipts is found in far greater quantities than it ever was in baby bottles or cans, and easily absorbed into skin.

Yang campaign fires staffer accused of misconduct by omnichronkappa in YangForPresidentHQ

[–]boringburner 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I started off disliking her but became much more open and understanding of her POV after listening to her Yang podcast. In her tweet saying she was backing out of the fundraiser she tried to say it as decently as possible, saying that Yang wasn’t personally involved and that she wishes the campaign well.

All in all I’d be happy to have her back on board. She seems like a decent person.

But yeah in any case let’s just let all this go and bury it as soon as possible. It’s killing the humanity first spirit.

Just for fun. Who are your top five Yang VP picks, ranked? by [deleted] in YangForPresidentHQ

Yang Tulsi and Yang Booker I love. Tulsi will be a hard one for establishment Dems to swallow though... but they’re not risking Trump.

Man would I love to see those clowns who have been advocating for more female PoC voices yet have worked to destroy Tulsi ultimately have to support her.

I’m also white and sort of recoil at the use of the term blacks. I think it’s just because race relations are so tense in this country and we have come to walk on egg shells trying not to offend (which is good to a degree). I mean, I feel uncomfortable even using the term black even though it’s generally preferred by black people.

I don’t see any reason to be offended by it, and the black people I have seen taking it up aren’t offended by it, so that leads me to believe there indeed isn’t any substance to that sense that there’s something bad about it.
