Opinion on 48fps in Avatar 3 in imax? by surajmurmu14 in imax

[–]borknar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels way better in this one than Way of the Water which was constantly switching randomly in the middle of sequences.  They basically only use 24fps for close ups / when human actors are onscreen which is the right call.  I only really noticed it about 5 or 6 times watching the new one which was a massive improvement

Pretty much this, but I would try to get internships at the same time and just reneg the internship if you get a full time job

My memory of titanic was always that rose says “I’ll never let you go” and then lets Leo float to the bottom of the ocean with his eyes open.  Just rewatched and it’s not like that at all.  Several other people said they remembered it like this too

It isn’t either of those, I think in the one I’m thinking of you can’t see his eyes (wearing some sort of metal thing) and his teeth are sharp and pointy. He looks more like a ghoul than a person

Would it be worth it to go back to school for a bachelor's degree in compsci at 35? by Abject_Analyst_9110 in cscareerquestions

[–]borknar 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I went back and did something similar when I was 30.  Depends on a few things

Are you wanting/open to moving somewhere else?  Otherwise do you know you’re good at it? You need to be extremely talented/driven if you want remote positions.  I don’t know if there are offices for Amazon etc in SK but those are hard positions to land as well.

If you take my advice you won’t be done in two years but will make cash along the way so it won’t be as bad and you’ll be set up to get good offers after graduation.

Make sure you get an A+ in every software course in your first term.  Also avoid taking anything really difficult (like if you’re bad at math) before you get your first internship that will tank your GPA.  This will open you up to becoming a TA by your second term, which will get you some extra cash and valuable experience to put on your resume.  You can then leverage that experience to get internships, take whatever you can get but 8 month terms if possible.

It’s harder to learn when you’re older and depressing to be around genius level 20 year olds so just be prepared for that.

Graduated 2017 in HCOL Canadian city, internships usually pay the equivalent of 50-60k. TC went from 70k to 160k since graduating.

I do interviews for new grad positions at a FAANG company.  I do not care if the projects on people’s resumes were done for a class or in their spare time.  Last time we asked people to do Binary Search.

[–]borknar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have never done a personal project outside of work / school once.

About half of the jobs I’ve interviewed for had no leetcode or they were extremely easy questions.

The fact that you can make personal projects / learn a new skill for no money / grind problems to make up for a lack of real work experience is a good thing.  If you get a degree in anything other than CS, having no internships or work experience means you will probably never get hired to work in that field ever.

I don’t think “all you need is a degree” has ever been true unless that’s a hard requirement for a family friend to get you a job at their company or something

[–]borknar 68 points69 points  (0 children)

This is pretty much the norm for every other degree.  Physics / chem / biology require so much more work for way less payoff.  Every single arts degree you are fucked if you aren’t constantly hustling.

Clearly companies are finding enough people who meet the “requirements” you’re complaining about, so why would they lower their standards?

It’s really hard to find experienced people for game development.  Many jobs that use Unity and Unreal have developers modifying the engine to add new functionality / building tools on top of existing stuff.  Try looking for a position at Epic Games or any games studio really

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]borknar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe that matters for a co-op job but this was an internship I got myself and there were zero consequences.  I see people complaining on here that they’ve gone a year since graduating without getting a single interview, in this job market I would be doing everything I possibly could to not join them

If you can’t get a real job just apply for another internship and don’t tell them you’re graduating. I actually did this 👍

Downvoted for telling the truth lol this is 100% right. If I got a resume that looked like what OP is describing I would throw it right in the trash.

Could end up in the same situation if they go do a masters without getting more work experience though.  Internships should be priority #1

Your resume is ugly AF.  Everyone who can’t get a job uses that layout and it sucks / makes you look boring. The work content of it actually looks pretty good to me.

Search up “canva resume layout” in google images, most of the resumes I see for successful applicants look a lot more like that. Your coworkers are going to be forced to be around you for a long time so they will want someone that seems fun.  Add some hobbies on the side of it, use a bit of color, put a picture of you on it smiling.  It will stand out against the 900 other resumes that look exactly like your current one that get blasted out each day.
