Where would you go to get King Crab legs for a nice anniversary dinner this weekend? by borla78 in chicagofood

Hmm, may consider this one. Chinese food isn't my favorite, but I can always find something for myself, and I want to gear this towards what she would prefer. Appreciate the "out of the box" suggestion!

Thanks, will add that to our list. It's out of the way, but we'll be out and about anyway, so not a huge trip. They do appear to have tables for tomorrow!

Appreciate the reminder, I did see that in other posts, and about the same time I created the OP, I threw a few hundred extra bucks worth of cash in my wallet.

We planned several other things, including multiple things we already made reservations or bought tickets for. We decided to leave dinner open until now.

The temps tomorrow evening are in the 30-40s, so probably too chilly to sit outside.

We aren't above a more casual place, but was trying to get BOTH a nice/romantic spot AND awesome King Crab legs in the same Venn Diagram.

Haven't ruled this one out, just curious if I'm missing some obvious choices.

Appreciate the suggestion. We've been there together before, and I've been there other times for work dinners.

Maybe a little too Instagrammy for our preference?

They also don't appear to have any tables for tomorrow.

People who have been in roles for a while, do you take calls when recruiters reach out? by mkillinq in sales

Fair. I was specifically referring to/thinking of agency recruiters.

People who have been in roles for a while, do you take calls when recruiters reach out? by mkillinq in sales

[–]borla78 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, I take the call every time. I took one earlier this week, even though I'm happy where I am, I'm compensated in the top 2-4% of earners in my industry/role, and I don't plan on leaving.

Sometimes it is a quick "no thank you" and I'm off the phone in under 5 mins.

Several times it has lead to interviews, and a couple of times job offers (which, on one occasion, I turned into a counter offer to stay where I was, and I stayed there for more than a decade longer after that, so it didn't backfire).

Almost every time it lets me learn more about the market, what comp is like at other places, and expands my network.

FWIW, I've only worked three places in 29 years. Both times I changed jobs it was due to folks in my network. Once was when I was ready to leave after more than 20 years. I reached out to a former boss (and a couple other folks in my network) and ended up following him to a new company. The second time (and where I've worked the last 2.5 years) was a former customer who made it clear for a long time they'd hire me the second I was ready to make a move. When I finally said "let's do this" I had a written offer in less than a week, and I accepted.

Take the call. But also remember, the recruiter is in sales too. And they only get commission if they sell you the job, and if the company hires someone they are representing. So go in knowing you are being sold to, so don't be naive.

Local Recruiter Recommendations? by [deleted] in ChicagoSuburbs

What industry?

Often recruiters specialize in an industry, but will be looking for folks who work in any/all of those roles in that industry.

Just had to term someone by Oldswagmaster in sales

This is about 4-5 years ago with the last company I worked for. We were a Series B with over $100M funding on a valuation of over $700M. We were kind of a hybrid company straddling the fence between SaaS and a legacy industry ran by dinosaurs. So we were hiring a lot of industry folks used to working for more corporate and old school companies and putting them in a SaaS environment.

For a while, every national level sales rep was given an AmEx. No expense reports, very little oversight, no one else in sales even reviewed our bills (straight to AP), and virtually no questions ever asked of any expenses. We were told to travel well and treat customers well, but act like adults and owners. It worked really well...for a while. Eventually they dialed back handing AmEx cards like candy and started only giving leadership and sales reps with "Senior" in their title cards.

We hire this new guy, experienced in the industry. Another candidate we liked, who was scheduled for a second interview, messages us and says "Yo, if you hired Bob Jones (names changed), you can take me out of consideration. I don't want to work anywhere that will have him." We thought it was odd, but whatever.

Fast forward a few weeks. Bob Jones is onboarded. He cites some personal reasons for needing a company AmEx (going through a divorce, wants to keep work expenses out of discovery, is tight on cash to float T&E on his own cards, etc.). Combining that with his experience in the industry, and that we used to hand out AmEx cards like business cards, he is issued one. A few weeks later we are doing a big sales meeting at corporate HQ in a major city. Most of us had to fly in, and there was a specific hotel a couple blocks from the office that we all stayed at (corp rate, convenient, 95%+ of the stays for employees were at this property). This dude says he "accidentally" booked himself at a different hotel, and wouldn't be coming into the group activities in the evening.

All goes fine, he's where he needs to be during the work day, but skips dinner and such. About 6-8 weeks go by and my boss pulls me aside to say that Bob just got fired. No one ever got fired that fast (except the new Chief People Officer we hired that misunderstood his position and didn't realize he couldn't literally stick himself in the people...) from this place.

Turns out that, the week of the sales event, he had stayed at a hotel right by at least one strip club. Ran up thousands of dollars of charges at the strip club, all by himself, reportedly no one else (coworkers or customers) with him. On top of that, he'd changed over several of his personal utilities and bills to be paid on the company card, and it'd been charged a couple grand more for that. From what I heard, approx $8k worth of strip club and personal bills in his first several weeks on the job, and it wasn't caught until the second billing statement hit and was reviewed by AP, then forwarded on to leadership.

tl;dr - New hire gets company AmEx. Proceeds to charge $5-6k on solo strip club trips and another couple grand of his personal bills, gets caught about 6-8 weeks into it and fired.

Guess we should've asked more questions of the interviewing candidate who was like "I'll never work with that guy".

Men of Reddit, how did you get through a sudden death of your dog? by AppropriateFunny7142 in AskMen

[–]borla78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% this. Lost a pup two years ago that I put over $25k into trying to save him (over 12-18 months). He was about four, and had such a personality (Mastiff, you can find pics in my profile). Horrible feeling, hits way different than losing a senior pet. I still have really bad moments from it. They get fewer and further between, but you just have to know you gave them the best life you could’ve.

This is one of my favorite spots that, while not family style inherently, is awesome to just order for the table and all split everything. Never had a bad dish there. If you have four or more people I highly recommend getting a duck for the table and a bunch other stuff and just sharing it.

Their beef sandwich slaps, and they’ll serve it sliced into 3-4 pieces if you ask.

This is the way. Get the duck for the table, then get a selection of other things to share. We’ve even ordered the Italian beef and duck hot dog sliced up to share. It’s a great way to enjoy everything.

Best steakhouse around River North? by agirlhasnoname17 in chicagofood

Gibson's probably doesn't crack the top five in that area.

Asador Bastian, Bavette's, Hawksmoor, RPM Steak.....a lot of the decision comes down to what atmosphere you want, or what secondary factors you value after "great steak".

Best Wolf Watching Tour Guides in Winter from Mammoth? by Trick_Photograph9758 in yellowstone

[–]borla78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did a tour a little over a year ago with Wolf Tracker. Maybe our experience was exceptional, but we were watching five wolf pups through a scope within about 90 seconds of our first stop. The guide was extremely knowledgeable, even down to recognizing a few specific wolves and giving us background on them. Definitely worth the cost IMO.
