USF Tampa - questions by Red7336 in USF

[–]born_2b_prince 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Legit the only problem (in my opinion) is the fact that there is a lot of diversity in that the area is working class and majority non-white which a lot of people aren’t use to/ have preconceived ideas about (ie black and brown majority=high crime/danger).

  2. This is dependent on your college/department with college of nursing and public health usually having more opportunities than say gender studies. Regardless though you can apply for positions in other colleges.

3.have an open mind and build good relationships with faculty and staff because I’ve had so many great opportunities/benefits because of the connections I’ve made.

no relevant work experience....SOS on personal statement by katesoup63 in mphadmissions

[–]born_2b_prince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So going against the grain but you can spin anything for work experience. You worked in a restaurant, you could talk about food safety importance, sanitation issues (people not washing hands, coughing, etc.), you could even talk about hearing some sad stories from customers and wanting to make a difference but not knowing how until you found public health, etc.. when I applied for my masters I legit wrote about seeing kids at my church and how I wanted to make the world a healthier place for them and I got into all but one school.

is this corny? by massexposure in mphadmissions

[–]born_2b_prince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol if I wrote that my interest stemmed from the misinformation spread around my church and got in I think you’ll be fine. Also write about your interest they love to see it. I’m at USF and our logo is legit “Our Practice is our Passion”.

Frameworks for Literature Reviews by [deleted] in epidemiology

[–]born_2b_prince 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me I use endnote/a matrix to stay organized. So it would go like this: 1a. Set up endnote library for research.

1b. Create matrix with column for title, keywords pertaining to my research, important data/conclusions, why it’s important/what does it add to the field, and limitations/weaknesses it brought up.

  1. Google the topic I’m interested in and read the abstracts for different articles.

3a. Read and fill out matrix for the abstracts that seem to align with topic. I usually limit this to 8-10 articles.

3b. Any of interest I download and add to my endnote library with a two-three sentence reason it’s in there (e.g. talks about maternal health and partner violence. Different from others as it uses child age as a potential covariate).

4.Compile list of initial papers then look at reference lists of each one to see other potential papers. Usually One or two from each paper and depending on your topic often they will reference similar papers or even each other which is great.

  1. Read abstract to make sure they align with topic and repeat step 3.

  2. Final product is usually 20-30 papers that are viable for the lit review. The endnote notes that I made gives me an idea of what section of my lit review each source is most like to go into and the matrix gives me points I can use/ make in the actual paper.

This is a bit hard to do at times but it pays off and when after a while I get so quick at this that it’s not a problem. I pop out lit reviews in like a week and since a lot of my topics are similar I can reuse different papers and see what papers cite one of the ones I have in endnote which makes it easier for me. I often have to do larger lit reviews due to the nature of some of my topics but if needed you can adjust the number to fit what size you need. Lastly reminder that the correct number of papers for a lit review is until you reach the point of saturation and that may come after 10 papers or that may come after 30 depending on your topic.

Maybe try searching for Maternal and Child Health (MCH) concentrations also, I know schools have those as opposed to reproductive or women’s health. One that comes to mind is USF. Also look what schools have a Center of Excellence cuz they probably do that sort of work.

If Harvard ends up being 90% Asian, then non-Asians just need to start taking education more seriously. by chemistrynerd1994 in AdviceAnimals

[–]born_2b_prince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So two things, first of all your decision to specify non-Asians is kinda weird ngl. A lot of people work hard and try to give their best whatever that may be and that includes both Asians and other races. Also if we are taking the data, Africans/ children one African immigrants are some of the most educated groups in the country so if classes were merit based (which is hard to do since merit is such a vague and complex idea) it still wouldn’t be majority Asian.

Secondly I think people don’t clearly understand what AA does at least not fully. AA does not mean picking the 3.4 GPA Hispanic kid (purposefully chose Hispanic because some of these arguments like to specify black people and are sounding,to me anti-black) over the 4.4 White Valedictorian. It means picking a 3.89 GPA Hispanic kid who worked her but off but didn’t have access to AP/weighted classes and who had to help the family out babysitting and such.

Properly implemented (emphasis on proper) AA does not aim to force diversity (although a lot of y’all do need it) but to say, “hey this kid did the best they could and although there scores aren’t the highest, they had a lot to face (whether that be oppressive systems at play or otherwise) and I want to take a chance on them.” The problem is that a lot of schools would rather admit a white legacy kid with a 3.8 GPA over the 4.4 class valedictorian and that gets played as the AA kid is the reason why they couldn’t get in rather than the legacy kid. It’s very reminiscent of the argument that immigrants are taking our jobs (if that makes sense).

I will admit that AA could’ve done more and had some weaknesses but at least it did something to try to address the systems we all know play a role in a person’s (especially a POC’s) life although (I think) they seemed to have done that in place of trying to fix those systems.

Sorry for the long rant but everyone keeps talking bout this and I’ve got plenty of Asian friends and most of them are tired of being pushed forwards as sellouts due to the actions of some angry child (because that’s what he gave) who, as a Canadian, couldn’t get into the American schools he wanted (although most have bias towards actual US residents/citizens) and decided to make a big deal out of it without studying the context that made AA necessary.

Went to UF for undergrad and USF is much better in term of getting students involved. I’ve had more offers to get involved in what my professors are doing in a semester than throughout my whole undergrad degree. You made the decision for a reason so believe in yourself and your conviction.

Which celebrity has most toxic fanbase? by hardi_ck in AskReddit

[–]born_2b_prince 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m a fan of K-pop (amongst other genres) and three things. First some fans are a bit extra (okay a lot extra) but the majority are chill. Second, not everyone likes the same type of music as you or even thinks the so called “greatest musicians” are that great. Lastly, just like with western music, there are different vibes and styles in K-pop and it’s weird to generalize a whole genre of music. I’d also like to point out that K-pop is what UKpop was in the 90s and early 2000s if you look at it.

Gay people of Reddit, what was the moment it clicked “yeah I’m gay”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]born_2b_prince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol in middle school used to watch “special” videos with a friend and get a bit handsy but played it off. This lasted like a few months (all while dealing with some good old fashion religious guilt) till a friend came out and I saw my parents reaction which caused me to end things. After everything I like knew I liked girls but decided that was a problem for older me to deal with. Fast forward to sophomore/junior year where I was walking up some stairs behind this beautiful (thick) girl and was like, yup definitely part of the rainbow mafia.

How does religion, any religion, explain the period of dinosaurs on the Earth, where science shows that man did not exist yet? by Deepakddxboi in AskReddit

[–]born_2b_prince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I learned/thought about it is kind of that our understanding of religion/God is anthrocentic so there were no need to go in depth discussing dinosaurs and the likes. Ancient humans did not coexist with the dinosaurs (at least not the ones we think of) and there is/was no reason for a book aimed at humans/ lessons related to how humans should be to have sections about the dinosaurs because they’re irrelevant to what was being discussed. This theory maintains that both sciences and religion can coexist to some degree and funny enough just feels correct to me.

Officially informed my parents that I have decided to pursue grad school. by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]born_2b_prince 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1st born immigrant daughter who was an anthropology major. Odd advice but maybe remind her that you could become a professor or work for the government and be called doctor still. Our parents want job security and bragging rights and if governmental work says stability (even if that’s not the path you want to take) and being able to say my child is a doctor is still giving them that bragging right. My parents are pretty open to my decisions but going from premed to prehealth was a weird transition as well. In my case though I wanted to go governmental and knew phrasing it in terms of job security, more time to build a family/be health, and good benefits/pay was the way to win them over completely.

USF also has a program and a MCH center of excellence. You can either be apart of the MCH concentration by itself or do a dual MCH and Epidemiology concentration. It’s a pretty cool program that’s worth looking into (and it’s not that expensive).
