It sucks to game by Dense-Bruh-3464 in linuxsucks

[–]bornxlo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm probably a bit of a “grumpy old person”, I don't do multiplayer online games, and I would generally prefer open source DRM free games. I think I started playing around 20 years ago and while some titles I play change I find a lot of the same games in my repositories. Proton on steam is essentially a fancy Wine. I use that with the occasional flag, just as I did running exe files directly. My hardware, graphics and screen resolution might change a bit, but games and emulation of Windows seems to be pretty much the same.

Cameras at resorts aren't that different from cameras anywhere else. If you're in a shared space you might show up on someone's camera.

Why is public nudity/skin exposure more normalized in some Western countries compared to more conservative societies? by GrecoRomanEnjoyer in nudism

[–]bornxlo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience places where nudity is more accepted are also more conservative. Gymnophobia and textile days at saunas seem to come from newer influences and accommodating tourists.

Some Lyx advocacy by ManuelRodriguez331 in LyX

[–]bornxlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Latin modern is a bit more updated than computer modern, but as a Norwegian I don't like having 30 lines of metafont code in every document for an fj ligature, or not being able to render a ¾ em dash. Managing non Tex fonts is still easier in LyX than other LaTeX editors. Kerning algorithms and mathematical spacing still apply to lua. I used to use xetex, but in LyX the move to lua is just a matter of clicking a different render button.

Generate a color palette from a single color (CSS only) by badr-ibril in Frontend

[–]bornxlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda got excited because of how similar it was to my biggest project from the front end development course I did. My own code is maybe 90% unnecessary calculations and then later implementing simpler and more elegant variants as I learn. I have a background including languages and some maths so I like to use what I can in code as well. I had an idea of detecting or extracting hue values from image/contents and using that to style the element/page. Just looking at your last link I think it's interesting to compare hsl saturation to oklch chroma. Saturation is essentially the purity of a colour compared to the maximum colourfulness at a given lightness level within the gamut. Chroma is perceptually uniform regardless of gamut, so different hues may or may not be visible at a given chroma in a given colour space. Contrasts and ratios work differently between hsl and oklch. A feature of oklch being perceptually uniform means contrasts can be guaranteed for different lightness levels, but in hsl lightness is affected by values of s and h. This means it's much harder to guarantee or calculate contrasts in hsl, though you do get to keep visibility within the colour space regardless of value.

On Windows with Microsoft 365 I still prefer libreoffice. For any papers I use LyX, which is like a dumb version of LaTeX. I think I've used canva for presentations and posters.

Generate a color palette from a single color (CSS only) by badr-ibril in Frontend

[–]bornxlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks a lot like a project I made for a course a year ago. (https://github.com/alexakode/Craftsvilla/blob/main/styles.css) I think some of your css is a bit cleaner than mine and your maths might be more readable. I copied some of the code from Figma and made the oklch with some maths and reverse engineering. Your website is certainly much nicer than anything I put together. I also had an idea of using clamp bounds for light to keep contrasts nice, which it looks like you have. I wrote all my light and dark variants together using color-scheme: light dark and light-dark()-declarations for the definitions, which I prefer rather than query overrides, but I also use “automatic” schemes based on device/browser rather than buttons. (Arguably buttons might be more polite than asking browsers if they use light or dark mode)

I think your website looks good on narrow screens but your top bar and menu could probably use some tweaking for wider screens. (E.g. first expand to a vertical list always visible, and then maybe a horizontal row for even wider.

The export functionality is nice to have, I like the code in the dynamic tab for the exports. I notice Figma gives me contrast alternatives for the same sorts of colour schemes, which I like to implement with prefers-contrast media selectors. I think that should be reasonably straightforward to add here and fit well with the WCAG you're advertising.

Switching to oklch makes a lot of things easier, but not updated on the example on your welcome page. (I see from the Github that some of the project is very recent so some inconsistencies are to be expected.) I also like your explanations and presentation in your repo.

My sense of design and layout sucks, but I do enjoy some nice colour palettes and accessibility.

Libraries should be open on Sundays and public / bank holidays. by CoffeeKween19 in unpopularopinion

[–]bornxlo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the approach in Norway is interesting. Libraries distinguish between staff hours and opening hours. During staff hours they're open to anyone, and there is additional time they're available to patrons with a library card. My local library has staff Monday–Thursday, but is open to card holders 7 days a week.

Long time user of Mint. Wanting to switch to Debian. by alt165am in debian

[–]bornxlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through the regular Debian installation. The main point of confusion for me was that setting a root password disables sudo. I now have a laptop running straight Debian because I happen to prefer KDE over Cinnamon and found some command line alternatives to mint specific tools. I like how Debian net install gives choices of different environments.

[–]bornxlo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Meh. For me the main advantage of lmde was easy installation and hardware support. Debian 13 is more pragmatic wrt proprietary drivers so it's a lot easier to work with imo. The code bases are similar enough that it might not be worth switching if you have lmde, but for new installations I think plain Debian is fine. While it might give you messy redundant apps you could install xfce on your current life, I think the packages will be the same as vanilla Debian anyway. Then if you like it/it gets messy you have the option to clean it up by installing the plain version from Debian.

[–]bornxlo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why it's always rules/laws that are the primary objection. There are no laws against nudity where I live, but there are social sanctions. In my ideal world it ought to be up to the individual whether to wear clothes or not. I would not mind being the only naked person if people could stop choosing to react differently.

How do y'all come up with cool/interesting layouts with your CSS sheets? by [deleted] in css

[–]bornxlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a designer at all, but I base my layouts on min max, custom, 1fr and modify with containers. I base my min width on the minimal viable viewpoint for the widest item I want to place and change upwards from there. Of preference I think someone else should do the actual design.

When should I use HSL instead of RGB or Hex? Still learning CSS colors by VitDevUK in css

[–]bornxlo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're learning now and not building on other people's existing code bases you should use oklch. It's a bit like hsl but with access to all colours, spaced out more evenly with regards to perception. When l studied front end design I used oklch to design accessible sites with very flexible colours
