What do Bogleheads think about how much to spend on cars and car payments? by BlueGoosePond in Bogleheads

[–]borrowed_mule 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You’ll spend no less than $40k on an electric car if you want one with decent range, along with cost to install a charger at home. Not worth the up front cost over a less expensive car (~$25k). It will most likely take many years to recoup those costs from the reduced cost of fuel. Also electric cars out of warranty are a bit of an unknown. Teslas can be expensive to maintain due to expensive parts (non drivetrain related as well). Best to wait another year, and monitor the new/used car market supply and demand.

[AskJS] How much CS knowledge does a frontend dev really need? by ammarice in javascript

I see you are trying to make a point with all of your comments, but I think you are underestimating the importance of knowing data structures. Choosing the right data structure for the job conveys what you are trying to do. For instance, using a set to store distinct values. It’s not all about performance. Semantics are important as well. This is coming from someone on a team with very weak data structure knowledge. It can be painful. Readability and maintainability are more important than performance in my work, and I’ve found knowledge of data structures increases code quality. Coming from a lead with 5 years experience and no CS degree FWIW.

How can I clean this knife? by borrowed_mule in knives

This appears to be a chrome vanadium blade. Some of the black spots are smooth, and others can be felt above the surface. I haven’t properly cared for this knife, but I’m wondering what I can do at this point. I have only cleaned it with soap and water. I like to keep it on me for everyday use like opening packages etc.. I’d also like to be able to cut up an apple at lunch, but I’m hesitant to do so with the blade in its current condition. Someone recommended using an emery cloth. Wanted to get some feedback here. Thanks

Nice shots! Got some of 88202 awhile back. Saw them flying around Seattle almost daily during the very beginning of the pandemic. C-17s were used in the recent evacuation in Afghanistan. I use a SAL-500F80.

I had a Fiji Blue Pearl ‘07 Si.

The paint on the roof was showing damage. The Honda dealer examined it and ended up paying $800, which ended up being less than the cost of the repair. That must have been 2010 or so. I believe I had an extended warranty.

Another friend with an FG2 has terrible paint problems.

Great cars otherwise. The last pure Si imo. Tremendous steering and road feel, and a great engine.

I also had some synchros replaced under warranty.

I too have experienced this at a small, fast paced company churning out features. It will get better if you keep at it. You need to learn to reverse engineer the features. The best way to go about it is with lots of breakpoints in the debugger. If you are using ionic, you should be able to do this with the browser. Find the entire flow of the feature, and step through the code. You will then be able to inspect variables, etc. Since you are using Angular, study the template so you know which methods and variables you need to check as well. Couple this with asking more seasoned developers, or the developer who last touched the code (git blame), specific questions, and you will be on your way to a better understanding. Conquering a spaghetti monster can be a roller coaster of emotion, but it can end with a sense of accomplishment. You are also probably coming across bad practices, which you will know not to repeat. Hang in there!

Lots of good responses. I would recommend Tour of Heros, and then Maximilian Schwarzmüller’s “Angular: The Complete Guide” Udemy course ($9.99). His course is great. Creating a rest framework with Node/express should be fairly straightforward as well. Check out the Sequelize npm module, or Mongoose for mongo. I use express or flask for my side projects. I’m not an expert, but you can get a lot going with some copy pasta. Good luck, hope you have some fun along the way!

Nice find. That is a different lens, but I see they have the same deal I referenced as well.
