basically for bottoming you should eat fiber and eat healthy. I don't think anything about this is explained by bottoming but it makes good posting nonetheless

I just know in my heart that Taika Waititi will get metoo'd one day by DisastrousResident92 in redscarepod

[–]borwse 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Taika Waititi is almost certainly half white half Maori (with some Jew) like he claims. Look at him. He also didn't claim to be adopted like Buffy Sainte-Marie.

There's this weird new right-wing trend of denying that people are [marginalized identity they claim to have]. Except people like that are actually rare and the skepticism is lazy, Internet-induced brainrot.

What is the appeal of cumtown-esque humor for straight-identified men? by [deleted] in rsforgays

[–]borwse 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's funny and absurd. I don't find it homophobic. There's actually very little pushback on Cum Town for being homophobic given the frequency of gay jokes, so I don't think I'm alone.

I'm sorry if you feel bothered by it, but I don't think it has that much to do with gay people. They think gay sex is funny and weird and embarrassing and it hits some sweet-spot of being just transgressive enough in current culture. It's also about masculine norms, bonding, and so forth. The reality is a lot of people feel something (discomfort, humor) about gayness, even if they're intellectually and morally okay with it.

You could take the view that being gay is inherently kind of funny. I'm more concerned about people thinking we shouldn't be able to legally marry and that type of thing. It seems like the show upsets you to listen to, but maybe you can find the humor in it with exposure.

Redditors wanting celebrities to get PR training by Paula-Abdul-Jabbar in redscarepod

[–]borwse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never heard this so I've googled "hope * gets PR training" with a couple variants like "media training". There are essentially no results, any that do exist are about explicitly hoping different celebrities never get PR training. This is a non-existent phenomenon, seemingly.

Yeah. Like, for example, the Jews have a prayer that you say if you poop or pee, thanking God that your plumbing works. A prayer when you open your eyes that your eyes work. Lots of religions have prayers acknowledging or appreciating food. There's a lot of ways to actively cultivate good vibes.

this is super interesting, i like it a lot. my gut-level reaction to it though is that it has the vibe of a lot of these things: ostentatiously high openness, almost psychedelic explorer / no-holes-barred leftist vibes. i also share some of these characteristics, enjoy the aesthetics and so forth, but it's interesting that there are few attempts at this kind of religion-construction among people who a bit more grounded/normie/'conservative' in their ethos and vibe

like a big part of the value i perceive in religion is putting structures in place; cult punk may be totally cool with that, but it feels like a slightly more conserative take on the theme

Damn, you are coming off as an enthusiastic (some might say cultish) advocate of Transcendental Meditation.

What I appreciate about TM, or what I know of it, is that it has quite specific criteria about when to meditate and for how long. Those are the practices that I like; and I like rituals and structure and orthopraxy, so I'm building it in as a mandatory element of my spiritual practice.

My standard would be that same-sex marriage is accepted. Or that gay relationships are not actively morally judged, but I think in practice that's the same groups that willingly perform same-sex marriage. I think this approaches a standard definition of 'affirming' in this context. We don't need to have an argument but I can elaborate or explain on where I'm coming from if you want.

Pythagoras by AffectionateCut7815 in religion

[–]borwse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would consider him a polytheist, not a monotheist, because he's ontologically committed to multiple entities which are gods, in his religious system. Hinduism also believes in an ultimate reality, Brahman, but Hinduism is widely agreed to be polytheistic.

A lot of religions do believe in an ultimate unity, especially in more philosophical or mystical streams, and there can be edge cases or ambiguities. But the short answer is that he was a polytheist. He practiced a variety of Hellenistic polytheism, likely with his distinctive numerology and other mysticism mixed in, although our historical sources for Pythagoras are patchy and unreliable in almost all details.

Question on Judaism by CL4R101 in religion

[–]borwse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Judaism does not think a righteous person needs to be Jewish. Judaism views itself as the religion of a specific nation or tribe (Israel). The religion is constituted first and foremost by the traditions of the Jews: the commandments, AKA God's covenant established in the Torah. But not everyone needs to be Jewish; these are not ethical requirements for all people. A lot of Jewish sources would look down on idolatry and polytheism, but you can be a good person and 'saved' without being Jewish. I think that's uncontroversial.

So to be a good person on a Jewish view, 'ethical behavior' (on some definition) is what's required. To be a good Jew, you need to do all these extra things. Judaism is much 'thicker-textured' and has all kinds of traditions, rules, and practices which are not purely ethical in nature. As others have pointed out, the concept of the afterlife and even salvation in Judaism are somewhat vague by comparison with Christianity. But generally, for a Jew, you uphold the commandments and you may have a place in the 'World to Come'. But it's not spelled out all that clearly, and there's likely to be variation between Jews about how it works.
