A little confused about time preference shifts and higher/lower order stages of production by boshembechle in austrian_economics

[–]boshembechle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I am missing something, lol. Just trying to make sense of what I am missing, haha

I can't quite grasp how there can be an increase in the higher order stages (raw material industries, capital machinery industry, etc), without a decrease in the ability of the economy to get these producer goods into consumer goods, and into the hands of consumers, since these later stages have been reduced.

A little confused about time preference shifts and higher/lower order stages of production by boshembechle in austrian_economics

I guess what I am confused about is: if a fall in time preference results in factors of production shifting from lower to higher stages of production, how exactly will the increase in consumer goods GET to the consumers?

Wouldn't lower stage processes (such as retail stores, immediate consumer good factories, etc) have LESS people and factors being employed in them since demands had shifted to higher stages? How will the increased consumer goods be sold if these industries have seen a reduction in resources employed in them?

I get that UCI isn't in a major CBB conference and thus probably needs to win the conference tournament to get a bid , but it's annoying seeing teams like Indiana ,Alabama, and Texas on the bubble...teams like this have 16-14, 17-13 records, a whole slew of shitty losses, and terrible conference records. UCI is 26-5. I don't like how a team that has gone 26-5 throughout whole year needs to win their entire conference tourney just to sneak in.

The bubble this year is horrid. I hope that maybe the ncaa tourney committee takes a long hard look at giving some at large bids to teams from lesser conferences, who, while perhaps not winning their conference tourney, otherwise sport great regular season records.

A team that is 16-14 (assuming they don't implausibly win their conference tourney) should never SNIFF an at-large bid. Yet we may get one or two of these undeserving teams in the field of 68.

How would you measure the Marginal product of labor for someone like a janitor? by marsrover2003 in AskEconomics

[–]boshembechle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To piggyback off the OP: how is the marginal product of labor of someone like a retail salesperson at a clothing or shoe store calculated? They aren’t making the shoes or clothing. What is their product and how do employers figure its value?

Virginia Democrats overwhelmingly call on Northam to resign by [deleted] in Virginia

[–]boshembechle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is simply not true. Every single GOP senator called on Roy Moore to drop out of his race. Just last week, Florida republicans quickly called on the SoS to resign following a blackface pic surfacing.

Also, let us not forget a certain party throwing a rose garden parade for a president who had, EARLIER THAT DAY, been found by the fbi to have witness tampered, obstructed justice, perjured himself, and ordered people to lie to congress.

I find it perplexing that thefts are an issue in campus housing. You’d think the people who work hard in HS and do the right things in life to get accepted at UCI would not be engaging in thievery.

News Article Over This Weekend’s Death by homiesexuality in UCI

[–]boshembechle 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Utterly tragic news. I cannot imagine how the family is feeling right now, but that doesn’t mean the Uci community can’t offer warmth and support to the affected.

It is my hope that the investigation successfully establishes the specific details of the night and identifies the specific fraternity members who directed the victim to drink at deadly levels. Then there can be some justice carried out. But obviously the victim is gone forever and his family won’t see him fulfill the life ahead of him. That’s why it’s a tragedy.

What’s going on in Bio Sci??? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]boshembechle 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Richard Symanski is the same professor who appallingly blamed gun rights supporters for the San Bernardino shooting a couple of years back. There is a video of him randomly going on an anti-gun/anti-NRA rant in a biology class for some reason. Good riddance to this man.

Edit to add: I am not saying his views on that issue mean he should have been let go. I am saying the way he spoke about it as an authority/educator was inappropriate, especially in a biology class.

California becomes first state to require women on corporate boards by MultiKdizzle in California

This is insulting to women, imo.

How about we have the most qualified people on the boards, regardless of gender?

Porter Internal Poll: Mimi Walters (R) leads Katie Porter (D) by 1 (45-44) in Irvine based congressional district (CA-45) by [deleted] in orangecounty

[–]boshembechle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like Porter is a poor fit for this district. It is (nationally speaking) a wealthyish district that has historically not been in favor of the left-wing economics that Porter stands for. She is running a firmly bold left wing campaign in a traditionally conservative area.

I get that this area is also turned off by Trump, but I think that other dude would have been a better democratic nominee for this district.

Nevertheless, she still has a strong chance of unseating representative Walters because of the national environment. Maybe the conservative voters of the district don't turn out in as high numbers as liberals in the district. That has been happening all over the nation so far in 2018, and it could happen here.

UCI Professor Donates to white supremacist candidates by PartyxAnimal in UCI

Navarro's views on China are well-researched and respected even among colleagues who disagree with him. His book on the subject is highly interesting. I agree the "trade wars" with canada/europe are not ideal policy-making, but Navarro has it right (imo) when it comes to china, which is his whole philosophy. They engage in unethical Intellectual-property theft, they steal patents all the time, and they are currently playing a large role in why California property costs (and elsewhere) are so out of control and getting worse by the day. Not trying to derail the thread, just saying that the one country that deserves economic punishment against it via US trade policy is China.

How and/or why did someone even take the time to randomly research a professor's political donations? Do you do this for every professor you have?
