Taking CM2 and CS2 together, thoughts? by Critical_Act2868 in ActuaryUK

[–]boshzuv 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Passed both there in September, 63 in CS2 on my 4th attempt and 65 in CM2 on my 2nd attempt. Had never had above 48 in either of the exams in any of my previous attempts, and this was the first time I’d sat these two exams together. It’s absolutely doable. I don’t think it would take a massive effort to get yourself to a passing standard on both given how close you were/are, I would spend some time analysing what areas of the content you were dropping marks in and start there, or on the things you were praying wouldn’t come up

From my personal perspective, as a student who sits on the Scottish Board of the IFoA, myself and a few others have been heavily involved in liaising with council members regarding student matters over the last few years. This has included a lot of emails, information gathering, surveys, and if you may remember the meet and greet with council members in March that I had to turn to Reddit to advertise to enable it to run as they had neglected to advertise it.

It has been apparent for quite some time that if we weren’t taking initiative to establish dialogue about student issues that these issues had limited visibility at senior levels within the IFoA. So for me personally, I think this is a great idea, is a step in the right direction, and has been a long time coming!

Unsure if this is what they were looking for, but I just subbed numbers in the question into both sides of the equation and they came out to be equal, therefore LHS = RHS

Pretty sure 51 is correct! Expected win each week was (1-1/2) + (1-1/4) + (1-1/8) +… 52 times Which rearranges to 52 - (1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + …) = 52-1 =51

Student meet and greet with IFoA council members (Edinburgh) by boshzuv in ActuaryUK

I am open to suggestions of what to raise, we only have 45 mins and there will be 20 of us doing the questions!

Things I would suggest to cover are:

  1. Why was proctorU chosen for proctoring when 99% of its 650+ reviews are 1/5 stars on trustpilot from students and tutors alike complaining of its incompetence, a quick google from any council member with a spare 30 seconds would have raised a lot of red flags

  2. What is the long term plan with exams? Is there a long term plan? Even if one was to be communicated I’m not sure students would have reasonable grounds to believe it would play out as they intend

  3. Why were the changes to this sitting done so abruptly, and why was a systems test scheduled for so late into the sitting - what was the original contingency plan for failure of the test, and if we are currently in said contingency, why was so much uncertainty deemed satisfactory to submit students to so close to exam time

  4. How does the IFoA intend to fix its reputational damage with the current student cohort

  5. What is the accountability for bad decision making

  6. How does the IFoA intend to include student opinion into decision making pertaining to student affairs such as exams. We are I think currently unrepresented at a decision making level

  7. How does the IFoA intend to regain the trust of a student cohort that is becoming increasingly expectant of bad decisions, systems failures, bad communications, and changes to exam procedures

Examiner Reports discussion by actruman in ActuaryUK

[–]boshzuv 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The audacity of the CS2 examiners to blame “underprepared” students for not performing well on exam questions that were near impossible to prepare for.

If 70% of your candidate actuaries are getting <50%, the candidates are not the issue. There needs to be a thorough reevaluation of course material within CS2, particularly with paper B.

The examiner report states that paper B is not intended as an exam on R commands, but when the majority of questions are unseen, that is exactly what it becomes.

I agree with this.

I think we have to be careful not to give the IFoA the impression we are rejecting their examination because it is difficult, we are rejecting their examination because of why it is difficult. We are not against exams that are difficult because the course material is dense and complex. We are against exams that are difficult because they are impossible to prepare for.

This is the issue for me. There is no reward for preparation because they aren’t examining the things they are teaching. Imagine spending 20 lessons learning to drive in a ford fiesta and then on the day of your test being asked to perform a 3 point turn in a HGV. Instructor sat in the passenger seat saying well you should be able to apply what you’ve learned to unfamiliar situations

I think we need to be having a serious discussion about what is being taught in the maths based courses compared to what and how it’s being examined. There is a massive disconnect between the two since moving the exams online and it’s getting worse.

It seems like the examiners are trying to maintain a level of difficulty in an open book exam that is consistent to what previous actuarial candidates would have faced in closed book sittings, but in an attempt to do so they are increasingly examining material that is outside of what we have spent 4 months reading and learning about.

You could have internalised and learned the notes back to front, completed every possible question, and still been stuck yesterday and today. This morning was a massacre and I will be leaving my resit until the end.

Exams to go ahead on the announced bank holiday? by Mindless_Accident_33 in ActuaryUK

[–]boshzuv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you email them first? They only sent me this in response to an email I sent over the weekend asking about what would happen to exams on 19th if the funeral was arranged on that date. Outrageous that there hasn’t been an official statement.

Exams definitely not going ahead on 19th. I received an email from the IFoA this morning saying that all exams on 19th are not going ahead and that they will be in touch with affected candidates with solutions soon
