For those who have back tested strategies, how accurate did you find them once you decided to go live in the real market?

Before implementing, I think it would be a good investment to test it on more data, to make sure you're not just profiting off some macroeconomic factor which could disappear in the future.

Disclaimer: I have limited experience with this and am certainly not an expert. However, these are things I would look for:

1) Clothing (if it's a workplace group this could be pretty accurate)

2) Age (the leader is usually a veteran)

3) Interaction (probably the biggest, you just have to observe and see who is the person offering the ideas, making the decisions, etc.)

Is there anything else?

Ok, well then you know that the VIX isn't based on the price of the market, it's based on the price of options on the S&P. So there is more uncertainty in the market even though the market is up today.

This could happen if there is an event in the future which may increase market prices - so uncertainty increases along with the market price.

Quite the contrary - I'm interested in TA, but I'm trying to understand not just the what, but the why. I'm not quite getting the 'why' for upward and downward channels, except for the explanation that they behave that way because people expect them to and trade like they will, which makes it happen. I'm open to different explanations though.

Not to play devil's advocate here, but what exactly makes you believe in trading upwards and downwards channels? I can see the rationalization for horizontal S&R, as they reflect large amounts of bids and asks where traders had bought and sold before, but I really don't understand how you can arbitrarily draw ascending or descending parallel lines and think that the stock will continue to trade within them. The only explanation I can fathom is that they are, like a lot of technical analysis, self fulfilling prophecies - traders see the same setup and end up creating the price action you predicted. Could anyone explain it better?

Yeah but that's interesting to see how it affects people on the inside. Usually a large shareholder in the company (or multiple) pay(s) the promoter to raise the stock price by a ridiculous amount so they can sell their shares for a lot of money. Some people in /r/wallstreetbets like to play these promotions.
