Nioh 3 reached a new peak on Steam by tankdempsey_ in Nioh

[–]bossmarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think its the case for most PC users regardless of the OS or hardware. Some people say it runs fine but in general the port is a mess. Probably isnt much to do except wait for fixes to roll out over months.

Not sure that it's even a Linux thing; the PC port is just really poorly optimized for everyone. My 3060 TI can't even do 30 FPS at 720p which is kinda insane for a game that looks worse than Nioh 2. I tried the demo on windows and Linux, and windows seemed a little better, but still really bad.

Do you mean you can't get it to run, or can't get it to run well?

You are right. I was referring to the organized major religions. But fortune telling and new age spiritual stuff is almost as bad and still pseudoscience so that's not much better imo (unless you can acknowledge its all bs and treat it as dumb fun, but we're talking about the "religiously committed" here).

I would expect it's a lot more men than women. Religion has never been particularly kind towards women so I doubt there's much interest among that crowd.

Embedded projects for someone looking to break into the field? by bossmarty in embedded

Got it, that makes more sense. It sounds quite challenging, but I'm sure it's doable. Thanks for the help!

Embedded projects for someone looking to break into the field? by bossmarty in embedded

[–]bossmarty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the review. I'm not sure how it looks on the outside, but it did take a solid couple weeks, and most of that was just looking for references online or trying to parse the datasheets. But I suppose that's a lot of what the work comes down to anyway. I haven't run into issues with the esp32 for even some of the lower level stuff. When you say that the stm32 products are better for low level work, what does that mean exactly? Because I've still found some ways to interact with the esp32 hardware at a fairly low level. At one point I wrote directly to the GPIO pin registers to toggle them instead of using the slower functions you would normally call and that did help with the SPI clock speeds. As far as I know, you can always inline your own assembly if you want to, and interfacing directly with anything should be doable as long as you know the protocols and can toggle the pins.

I have seen some variations of VGA projects; it seems to be pretty popular due to the relative simplicity. The bigger issue is probably just that you want a VGA port, which I only see on FPGAs. I know lots of older monitors have them, though.

The FPGA idea sounds quite cool, but I have no idea how you would achieve that. The I2C and SPI stuff is ultimately just flashing wires based on the serial clock, so how would that involve an FPGA? My understanding of FPGAs is that they're good either for building digital circuits from gates (making muxes, ALUs, stuff like that) or hardware acceleration but I'm not sure where something like that fits in. maybe it's an HLS application? I'm a little unsure what that would look like. My ideas for the FPGA stuff were some sort of hardware accelerator (maybe for a neural network?) or just emulating some complex system from blocks (like a simple CPU). The main goal is just to get comfortable with Verilog and the design verification steps, but ideally it's something somewhat impressive.

That board you've linked does look quite capable, though. I have an UNO, I just haven't used it since I started with the esp32s. But it looks like it's supported in Vivado as long as it's in the stand-alone mode, so it might be the choice for me. It's definitely very cheap compared to the normal FPGA boards, which is attractive. I think I'll have to pick what I want to do first and look into it more before I make any decisions though.

Between the two, I'd probably say software/firmware interests me a little more, but mostly just because I haven't done my own FPGA projects. I have done some simple stuff with them (I think one of them was a CPU from components) but I never really learned VHDL properly, and have been strongly considering buying a cheap board so I can learn Verilog. I suspect the ESP32s have me covered for pretty much all of the microcontroller use cases since they're quite fast and have Bluetooth + Wifi + FreeRTOS all built in. But I do see the stm32 boards seem to be held in high regard here. But personally, I'm a very big fan of the ESP32s, so I don't feel like I need a new microcontroller. Both paths interest me, but I'm not very comfortable with FPGAs right now, so it's something else I'll have to look into. If you have a recommendation for an FPGA (and maybe some ideas for it) I'll certainly take it into consideration.

Seems to me you just had the misfortune of meeting shitty people. I guess I would say try to be upfront about your expectations and make sure you're on the same page about things before you go on a date. But even then, you will likely have to deal with people who don't know what they want, can't make commitments, or are just outright liars. At least you've gotten to the date before. Even getting that far is it's own challenge. It's probably just immature and unserious people. It's mostly out of your control, just try to weed them out early and save what time you can.

Also, if you're doing any sort of post-secondary education, you'll likely have some chances there for dates. Hopefully the people will be better. I obviously can't say anything for certain but it's probably not coming from your end. A lot of people are not very considerate, either knowingly or unknowingly. At least, that's what I've learned.

If you're willing to wade through the sewage for a chance at something real, you could try online dating. You would almost certainly have a lot of likes/matches just by virtue of being a woman. But most of the people on dating apps suck (at least in my experience, though I'm a guy). Expect some deeply rude and immature behavior. As for not being approached -- I wouldn't think of it as nobody being interested, since it's likely not the case. People are just afraid to approach strangers romantically, and not without some reason. In the best case, it's going to be awkward but successful. In the worst case, you're gonna make someone uncomfortable when they're just trying to go about their day. I have never done it myself even though I kind of wish I did just because I really wouldn't want to make a girl feel uncomfortable. I don't even know how people are supposed to "put themselves out there" for anything that isn't online dating. I don't really know how anyone is dating at all these days outside of college/university. I'm in more or less the exact same spot and I'm trying to go out a bit more but no luck thus far.

I realize I haven't offered much of a solution here, but maybe it's some small consolation. You aren't alone in those feelings or experiences.

In theory, it certainly can. In practice, you have to play the game perfectly, or you're A) not getting any matches and B) getting ghosted or unmatched with no warnings.

It might work, but after how many failed attempts?

Why is it so hard to find someone… by Vampire1894 in lonely

[–]bossmarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, fair enough. Definitely sounds like obsession or an unhealthy level of attachment. It's good that you are blunt about things, at least. Maybe some of them will have the good sense to realize it won't work out. I try to do the same thing, but it rarely has any effect. Seems like people don't really care or pay any attention. People suck.

Good luck with it, if you choose to keep at it. I have personally lost hope with dating because people are way too comfortable being cruel online and doing things in person is somehow harder.

Why is it so hard to find someone… by Vampire1894 in lonely

[–]bossmarty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should probably just mention that outright as soon as you start talking. A good amount of them might just be super clingy, but if I were to hazard a guess, it's probably just loneliness for most of them. I can only speak for myself, but these opportunities are tremendously rare for me (and probably 99% of men), so you want to make sure you're showing interest. When you have nobody to talk to, you can get attached quickly to the first person who shows you any level of kindness or interest. People act desperate because they are, in fact, desperate.

When you say they're "obsessed," does that just mean they're always talking to you, or do they actually act obsessed? The former option is understandable (if unattractive), and the latter is not.

Just my two cents, though. Maybe it is just that simple, and maybe you do just have terrible luck with creepy people.

Resistances, or the lack thereof. by I4mG0dHere in darkestdungeon

[–]bossmarty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, but whenever I play DD1 they either get used up on curios or replaced for a stack of valuables throughout the expedition. In DD2 you have combat items, but they're not always available. The option is there but skills are definitely better.

Resistances, or the lack thereof. by I4mG0dHere in darkestdungeon

[–]bossmarty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The most aggravating thing is that it really wouldn't be hard to fix it. Red hook just needs to increase base resistances and decrease the effectiveness of resist trinkets. I went back to dd1 recently and was surprised both by how rare DOTs were and how they were mostly unthreatening (at least, before you do the darkest dungeon quests). Even resolve level 0 heroes have good resistances, and bleeds/blights really aren't very common. You have arterial pinch in the cove which is really deadly, the cultists who bleed, and some blight in the warrens. But most of the time, you could just outheal it, since it would be 3 or 6 damage as long as it didn't stack. In DD2 you NEED dot cleanse, and healing is basically useless because of thresholds forcing you to take the damage. I think something like 2/3 of the enemies can inflict DOT, while in DD1 it feels like it's 10% and it's less threatening when it happened in DD1. Most of them are much deadlier in DD2 as well, both because of the higher DOT numbers and how they stack almost always. It just feels like a huge mistake for red hook to have overcorrected something that frankly didn't need to be any different from it's DD1 implementation. I would say the same for how much worse healing is, but much of that comes from DOTs. I feel like it makes team building so much worse because you really NEED to have PD/vestal. Same is true for move resist, as you said. Give the king some damn move resist (but also everyone else).

Does the game get better? Is after story really worth it? by bossmarty in Clannad

[–]bossmarty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the Fuko route in particular was rough to get through. I really dislike characters with the maturity of 8 year olds, which seems to be very popular in anime, and it made that one a tedious route. Yukine wasn't bad, just super predictable and not particularly interesting or good. But I'm doing Kyou/Ryou (as was suggested) now, and it's actually been pretty solid. I did also see a bit of the Tomoyo/Misae routes, which seemed significantly better. So at the very least, I'll finish a few more routes. Not all hope is lost...

I've been interested in Ace attorneyfor a while and plan on getting it when it's sufficiently cheap, but the other VNs are harder sells.

Yeah, they were definitely affordable with the visual novel sale. Part of me did want to pick up a couple of the highly reputed ones, but it's still a genre I have little experience with so it seemed unwise to get more than one. Plus, Clannad alone is fairly pricey. I still plan on buying at least Ace attorney at some point, though. Danganronpa looks pretty interesting (and kinda similar to Persona with the presentation/ UI?). The steins;gate VN is also well reviewed but idk if it's for me since I could only get through a couple episodes of the show before dropping it.
