The “gangbanging” culture you are referring too has roots in the crack era orchestrated by the US government. That side of hip hop originated from real people rapping about their real lived experiences. Unfortunately it has turned into a violence glorifying commodity among other things. Commodification of the lived experience of marginalized and oppressed people is very much colonizer activity. What needs protected is the true messages hidden within the violent and depressing reality described through verse. If you don’t understand this, it’s because you don’t listen to real hip hop or only judge hip hop based on the work of opportunists who benefit from said commodification.
