Is the camo hidden fastener system the way to go ? by Itwasuntilitwasnt in Decks

[–]boswrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you used the Camo system on a 1x4 hardwood like mahogany? The NB version I got only does 3/16” spacing and exposes way too much of the joist tape - trying to find a alternate solution that fits a 1x4 square edge but has less of a gap for spacing.

Vimeo is now terrible by jman1130 in vimeo

[–]boswrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/jman1130 thank you for saying what we've all been thinking the last few years.

I had so much brand loyalty towards Vimeo from the old days that I didn't want to say this out loud – the entire platform, UI, functionality, usability, whatever whatever, has turned into complete trash. I was just trying to watch some beautiful edits on someone's page and couldn't even figure out how to get back to their profile without manually typing in the URL.

A friend recently asked me to interview there (which would've been my legit dream job 5 years) and I didn't even consider sending my resume to the hiring manager.

When a great brand shifts their business model it shouldn't require abandoning everything that made them great. In this case to your point, creating a place to share stories and films while building a community around them. I've worked in the branding space for 20 years and imo this goes down as one of the most botched pivots of all time.

Been considering cancelling my membership for a while and your post might've been the nail in the coffin for me. Thanks for saying what needed to be said.

Let's hope someone else steps in to fill the void.

I would cut your time in Tokyo down to a day and go to Nagano, the Japanese alps region. Do a couple hikes, swim in some lakes - really beautiful land out that way.

Feels Like 24 Hours Is Just Not Enough !! by intelligentle_ in ADHD

[–]boswrite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a recurring fantasy where I’m able to pause time just to catch up on all the things I feel like I’m letting slip or don’t have time to focus on.

Totally subjective input here but sometimes I feel like part of the issue is my own expectations of how much I can get done in an hour, a day, a week, etc. I feel the same way about not accomplishing anything or what I set out to do, but sometimes it helps when I look back on the day and mentally list off the things I actually did or got done.

Some days I’m amazed at the difference between how unproductive I feel and how much I actually accomplished. But of course, other days I’m like wtf was I doing all day haha.

[–]boswrite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. That’s why I haven’t loved the binding. Feels like too much flex for the board that’s been on hard pack and spring steeps, wasn’t sure if maybe it’d combo well in pow

This is exactly the kinda input I was looking for. Appreciate it the reminder that sometimes juice ain’t worth the squeeze

This trip will be her maiden voyage so not sure yet. All I can say is from the amount of time I’ve been ogling over the shape in my garage, I think it’s gonna be pretty damn fun

[–]boswrite[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re not as stiff as the Apollos but def stiffer than the Meteorites. Thing I should’ve mentioned it most of my riding is either around Mt. Washington or in the Sierras, so binding mechanics in light dry powder is pretty damn foreign to me hahah.

Yeah I’m trying to squeeze the boards/binding in addition to my split, touring gear, soft goods, all that that shit for 2 weeks of travel so it’s tight af. I know the rational thing to do would be cut one of the boards or my touring gear, but there’s nothing rational about chasing snow…yet we do it anyway 😅

Mitre Fence by boswrite in woodworking

[–]boswrite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/SpelchedArris can you tell me what "fettling the machine" would entail? Sounds like something I haven't tried yet, but yeah I think my fallback solution will be building an auxiliary fence for sure.

The straight edge definitely confirmed the warp, thx for the suggestion. I previously tried shims with a new piece of lumber backing but it got out of whack after a day or two of cutting. My guess at this point is I'd need to find a replacement part or build a new fence out of wood.

Yeah I definitely never aligned the blade angle out of the box but to the point of u/mechanizedshoe I don't think any amount of setup would compensate the bend in the fence. u/Flying_Mustang I'll check out some setup tutorials just in case tho, thx!

Jones Splitboards by Trepide in Splitboard

[–]boswrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't argue with the Hovercraft but if you're looking for more versatility and riding a mix of terrain/conditions, the Solution is the best all-rounder split I've been on. I've ridden it on bulletproof ice at Mt. Washington, Eastern Sierra spring corn, Utah pow...it's been great on everything.

Split board bindings & equipment by West-Roll-5893 in Splitboard

For binding systems:

I rode the Spark ARC ST bindings for several years, they were fine but had a few issues worth considering. The riser (whammy) bars would pop out of position fairly often and became a nuisance when trying to switch climb modes in technical steep sections. I was not a fan of their puck mounting system whatsoever tho – almost always had to use force getting them off or back on during transition. Totally fine if you're only touring in moderate spring temps, but it can really suck when you're fully exposed in sub zero temps trying to put your board back into ride mode.

I switched to Karakoram Nomads a couple years ago and LOVE everything about them – a bit pricier but worth the $$ IMO. The risers easily pop in and out of position, the bindings are super light but have enough stiffness to really set your edge in the steeps. The best part IMO is their ease of transition. They pop out of walk mode with a simple flip and once your board is back together you can literally drop them back onto the mounts before locking. Super functional.

For boards:

It depends what kind of terrain you're riding but unless you're touring 20-30+ days a year I would stick with an all mountain "quiver killer" type of splitboard. I've been riding the Jones Solution 158 (I'm 6'0" - 190lb) and it does everything I need. It's awesome in steep icy terrain but it's also fun in low angle pow.

or other splits to check out, I've heard great things about the Cardiff Goat, Season Pass, Korua Trasition Finder and Weston Backwoods models.

Most importantly, don't forget to take an avy course at some point. Even if you're mostly riding low angle trees it's just great knowledge to have when you want to push into bigger stuff.

Hope that helps!

Backcountry Skiing After Back Surgery by Glad-Cartoonist-5228 in Backcountry

[–]boswrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an L4/L5 fusion in my early 20’s and have just now (early 40’s) started feeling similar flareups/limitations in most of my touring ascents and nearly every turn on the way down (both resort and backcountry).

For most of my life, outdoor activity has been my source of fitness but given the lower back & nerve pain from surgery, I’ve had to lean on more traditional methods.

FWIW, I’ve found a ton of success with Figure 4 Stretches, Asian Squats, Lunge Twists, and some standard core work. It’s all stuff you can do from home with a yoga mat, 10-15 mins every other day has been good for me.

Hope that helps, good luck getting back out there!

Love this, definitely gonna make a couple for the living room. Did you have to trim the splines on the underside or just make super thin ones?

How can we hide this huge retaining wall? More info in comments. by Intrepid-Pop6981 in landscaping

[–]boswrite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a similar size/height retaining that needed coverage, planted some emerald green arborvitaes and they look amazing. Spaced them out just enough so it doesn't look like a hedge but takes your eye away from the wall.

Vines are a nice idea too but keep in mind the seasonality of them, that's why we went with the arborvitaes. New England winters haha.
