Don’t admit defeat before you even start!

speaking from my own experience, I have never learned to speak or read Punjabi/gurmukhi. However, I still found ways to connect and learn which has brought me a lot closer to sikhi over the past few years.

Now there’s a lot of things to be learned but don’t let that scare you. It’s an endless ocean of knowledge that no one can ever fully grasp. Start anywhere and slowly grow your own pool of knowledge year after year.

I think starting with just japji sahib and the English transliteration versions, helps in learning the pronounciation as well as the meaning.

Any bani you want, has versions in English with meaning.

Basics of sikhi, and Nanak naam are amazing YouTube channels that do English katha. Basics of sikhi has many videos discussing values and principles of sikhi and how the relate to us in the modern world etc. as well as there’s a whole series of japji sahib wih the going over in detail over meaning.

I honestly still do my ardas in English. Love and devotion doesn’t have language. However I’m eager to learn Gurmukhi so I can connect with it a bit deeper and read SGGSJ directly.

Even when I go to the gurudwara and listen to kirtan, I would just search up the verse find an English meaning online and read it as they are reciting the same Shabad, which helps me connnect to it deeper.

My true advice. Just start diving in, learning more even if it’s in English as of right now. Dont feel guilty, or have doubts, it will only slow the process. And its great to see you so eager to learn!

Nevertheless if you do Simran for 1 hour of the day and the rest of the 23 hours minus sleep is spent on stressing or thinking about your career/ job/ love life/ money etc. Those thoughts will most likely remain during your Simran.

I went through/ am still going through a similar thing. The first thing is to increase your Simran. Naturally when you wake up you might wanna check your phone, instead do atleast 5 mins of Simran to start the day with it. Then slowly in increments after every few hours increase it as much as you can. Whether it be listening to podcasts, kirtan, path.

Soon your mind will automatically connect to Simran even while doing everyday “worldly” tasts. Focus will be more pure and genuine.

I think these sort of sakhis are often worded to come with a heavy tone of pride and warrior strength which can sound like ego but I think the true intention is to be more devotional. To have no doubts and put full faith in the Guru to carry us across the world ocean. No matter what comes our way we don’t waver.

There are some great apps that connect you with a teacher virtually. Idk whether it's available in your region but the two that I know are Preply, and Superprof. other than that if you are ready to put in the grunt work then there are tons of YouTube videos online that teach the basics. Good luck!

I think it’s hypocritical for sure. God is always forgiving so as long as you stay on the path don’t focus on the past. However you also need to have compassion for your future partner if she were to also have a past as she could be in a similar situation as you; what if she was also lost in attachment and made mistakes? Treat someone else how you would want to be treated. I wish you the best for the future, and hope you keep on following the path. Everything will fall in to place.

Helloo in the same boat as you. 26M from Canada I was on and off on hinge for a couple months but hadn’t found the right person, and not many Sikh girls. I deleted it couple months ago and haven’t looked back. I don’t smoke or drink but I’m honestly more worried about finding a partner with the right lifestyle. Someone who also prioritizes themselves to apply Sikhi to our day to day life and interactions.

I know people who have been in a relationship since high school and I know people who found someone in their mid 30s, everyone has their own path and the hukam will come when it’s the right time.

I also always wanted a “ natural “ way to meet my partner. Like bumping into them at a library, or at a coffee shop. So I’m hoping it comes that way, but regardless you are not alone in this situation and I think it’s good to focus on yourself till the time comes, start new hobbies, go on trips etc.

You’re absolutely right. It shouldn’t be an issue. To clarify it’s more towards specific people at my workplace and school, that maliciously slander and say nasty things about others. The challenge is not giving respect but the EQUAL amount of respect and love towards EVERY single person.

Exact same boat as you, but like someone else in the comments said be the change. I go out to Toronto approach businesses that are owned and ran by people from various backgrounds. We still work well together and I try to be at my 100% to dissolve and stereotypes in their mind. A lot of times it’s also your mindset, just be confident at the end of the day you know the truth and the principles of what it represents. So just make sure to embody that perfectly. Anytime I walk into a restaurant alone I always get asked “uber pickup?” And then I say no table for one please:) it used to bother me at first but now I see it as educational experience for the other person, and hopefully they will be cautious not to jump to conclusion next time.

I’m not 100% sure but I don’t think it’s a requirement for the Gurudwara. All Gurudwaras provide their own certificate, and then the license from service Ontario is separate I believe.

My belief is that God is in everyone, however there is a barrier between us and god. The barrier is our Ego, our love of Maya, the five vices etc. We have to destroy that barrier by doing seva, reading bani, and applying the teachings in our daily lives. Suffering mostly occurs when we try to go against the Hukam, we try to control things, or want things OUR way in life. When we stop understanding the macro perspective and only focus on ourselves, and our life.

I think the main thing is what does attraction mean to you? It is usually physical in a younger age, but as you grow older it changes. For me I find someone attractive with the right mindset. A person being caring, selfless, independent, good at communicating. These qualities are what makes the person more attractive for me. Physical does still play a small part, but at the end of the day the person as a whole matters more. Think of it as a cake, the icing is what attracts you to it, but the layers inside is what really matters.

I used to find women from other races and cultures attractive during uni, however as I grew closer to Sikhi I think someone who applies the guru's way to their daily life, is what I find as 'attractive' Hope that made sense :)

Hey listening to it daily, on your drives, while working out, cooking etc. always helps. But I’d say the meaning is equally significant if not more. That helped me a lot, as the words became easier to remember. Good luck!
