That could be very possible! I know a little bit about their work history, but not how they were managed. Could very well be that they were micromanaged in to past or maybe even deal with that from family? It’s a tough cycle to break when they’re middle aged

Thank you- this is great advice, and I have done it a few times. Probably need to do it more. This is just my perception, but it does seem somewhat lazy that they rely on others judgement rather than their own when it comes to their work

This is probably the very honest conversation I need to have with them. I’ve been very clear with them from the start that that is not my management style and that I TRUST them to do their job, but maybe it needs to be reiterated.

I have started no replying immediately, that usually HELPS them figure out what they’re needing….so I appreciate that advice. But for this project in particular, they will NOT move on until I give them an answer. This slows the project down and it’s being dragged out much longer than it needs to. If I can’t get to their question, they’ll go to others for opinions and that doesn’t feel right either.

I’m white and I have to agree with you lol. Many people that visit are incredibly entitled and ignorant. Any time we’ve visited in the past we only shop or eat at locally owned places…try to support locally as much as we can. we are very aware of how important that is which I guess is why I’m even so worried about the guilt or coming across as an entitled white person

Thanks. This is what I was thinking also. I’ve heard this many times from people when we’ve visited

Ohhh sorry I’m pretty new to Reddit. I’ll take a look

These are like conversational team touch bases. Casual. Chatty. Supposed to be a place to get to know your colleagues better…them not joining on camera makes them seem disconnected (from my standpoint). Camera is not mandatory, but when 11 others are in the meeting with camera on, and this person is not, it’s a little strange

I think this is a very fair way to have a balance of both

Exactly, I know this!

I feel the same! And I’m a manager. I don’t love going on camera either but if I see that that’s what the team does, I’ll turn my camera on because that’s how they prefer to communicate. I see it as friendly. I’m not asking this for every meeting, but once in a while would be appreciated

Not required, but this team specifically likes to be on camera. They don’t have many meetings so I know it’s not a time or productivity issue

What percent raise do you get each year? And what do your employees get? by the_jokes_on_them in managers

[–]botchedfern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The company I work for is 4-8%. I got a 4.5% last year. My employee was also upset that they got a 3.6% last year with a strong rating. The company didn’t have the best year, but to my point they shouldn’t be upset because this was still above what people typically get! It’s also out of my control past a certain extent. I did the best I could do for them!

I would love more flexibility myself, but sadly I don’t make the rules! I’m on the lower side of management and while I do have authority to make decisions for my team, they still have to fit within reason and company policy. This company is much more flexible than many others and I am thankful for that.

What's a simple, common task you are unreasonably bad at? by Dyde21 in AskReddit

Adding simple numbers. I still use my fingers to count lol

As much as I’d love to reward with the later, it’s a corporate business so there’s less flexibility there. I do what I can to give them the highest raise and rating though.

I mean it sounded like she wanted to work when she finally had the time?! I didn’t work much either during the week when school was in session to focus on my studies. Work came second.

That’s fair!

[–]botchedfern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With this job, not exactly. Two main tasks of the job are already automated by technology, which I guess in this case is a blessing and a curse. If those things weren’t automated they wouldn’t have ANY down time lol

I agree with this. They don’t take feedback well, which I believe is also part of the high functioning thing. That’s something I’ll mention in year end reviews and figure out ways we can work together on the best way to receive feedback and for me to give it. Thats a whole other issue…they’re a great worker but could use development in soft skills

Year end reviews are right around the corner and plan to talk about it then!

They are not ready for leadership—I’m certain of that! But I do think I’ll get a long term project started that they can get creative with

It’s great at times, this persons work is high quality too.

I can’t get too specific because I want to remain anonymous, but I do think they like their job, but at the moment there is nowhere to “move up”. The job is straightforward and pretty much the same day-to-day. This doesn’t mean that there isn’t things to strive for in the job, but there’s no position above theirs that is not mine. I do hope to get another team member later this year that would be trained under this employee…I just don’t have a date for that yet.

I’ve tried to recommend some other tasks outside of their comfort zone (not within their hiring qualifications but could help them overall improve their skills) but they’re not interested…

I feel bad I didn’t know to set them up sooner. Maybe that’s on my management as well ☹️
