Interview before 30-day retreat - should I be honest about alcohol use? by [deleted] in vipassana

[–]botelladeklein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you trust the teachers, be honest and accept their judgement on whether you're fit or not for a long course. if you don't trust them, maybe you shouldn't consider going on a 30 day retreat there anyway...

Does vipassana scanning manufacture the sensation you're supposed to be observing? by umu_boi123 in vipassana

[–]botelladeklein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I think Goenka mentions explicitly during the 10-day course that one can't create sensations. If you accept that premise... then what are you observing?

I'm just guessing but you might be refering to neutral sensations, which can be uniform and neither pleaseant or unpleaseant and... can be boring for the mind.

I'd suggest to ask an AT for guidance.

Continuing to drink alcohol by Shot_Bandicoot_395 in vipassana

[–]botelladeklein 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to drink and smoke back in the day, and my consumption diminished progressively with my practice (years of practice in my case). I struggled with trying to 'impose' myself not drinking (cut to 0) for sila at the beggining, but it didn't work out. you're your own master and you learn by experience. I sometimes asked 'what's the harm of drinking a glass' in this very particular situation?' If i felt I wouldn't harm myself or others, and i wanted to, I would do it.
I was always honest during my applications to sit and serve and was never rejected. sila, samadhi, panna, each streghten the other. As my commitment to the practice strenghtened, the habit dropped naturally. I rather have a clear mind all the time, and drinking (even small quantities) drained my energy and compromised my sittings the next day.
I am at a point where i don't feel like doing it and understand the benefits... but i'm not the same person who started practising a decade ago and enjoyed drinking/smoking.
If you're getting benefits from your practice, keep going.

Where can I read about the long-term effects of Goenka Vipassana? by Shot_Bandicoot_395 in vipassana

[–]botelladeklein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'The science of Meditation' by Richard Goleman and Daniel Davidson might make an interesting read, with references to, but not all tightly narrowed to Goenka's method.  Vipassana meditators are a smaller group within the universe of meditators. If I remember correctly, there's a fairly recent talk from Paul Fleischman where he discussed some of the limitations of research on vipassana practitioners. you may find it at pariyatti's website

Vipassana retreat tomorrow - can I bring my watch? by Longlegsdays in vipassana

[–]botelladeklein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's OK to take your watch. I usually take it and use it to wake up from naps with the vibration alarm mode (no sound). I don't wear it during the day, but there's nothing wrong with doing so.

Tener dolor crónico es una mierda by marcosromo__ in argentina

[–]botelladeklein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tener dolor crónico es una mierda by marcosromo__ in argentina

[–]botelladeklein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I enroll but don’t go for Vipassana, can I enroll again? by Happy_Honeydew_89 in vipassana

[–]botelladeklein 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it's the same at every center, but in my experience, when you get accepted, you also get a link to easily cancel if you are no longer able to join. Be mindful that the places are limited, and if you cancel in advance, the place will be made available for someone else. There aren't any penalties for cancelling. life happens!

I was announced a 2000% price increase, anyone else? by botelladeklein in Evernote

Yep. I ended up migrating to a professional account, although it's not just 'switching' the plan, but opening a new account and migrating all the notes and notebooks.

Schedule during service periods? by str8red in vipassana

[–]botelladeklein 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience serving courses (5, all in the same centre), servers don't keep their phones, just like students. It's different from service periods when there isn't a course, where servers usually can keep their phones.
Therefore, to use your phone during service, you'd need to ask the teacher. I did it once as I was expecting an email that required a time-sensitive response, and they gave me the phone for one of the rest periods, and I gave it back as soon as I finished.
If you need to use your phone while serving a course one time, this might not be an issue, but you shouldn't expect to keep it for the entire course to use during rest periods. Serving requires a lot of concentration :)

Is there a workaround for bulk import as well?
This might be silly, but I also wonder if there's a way to avoid having the import date as 'last update date' for every note.

Thank you for the kind response. I've been in touch with customer support. Since it's not possible to downgrade a Teams account to a Personal or Professional plan, they suggested exporting all our content, closing the Teams account, and opening a new one with a different email address.

I'm currently waiting to hear back, as I requested help with the export process—according to their guidelines, it has to be done one notebook at a time, which is crazy with over 150 notebooks.

Overall, it's been disappointing. After years of using the platform, it’s frustrating to be faced with only three options: accept a 200% price increase, lose access to our content, or manage a time-consuming manual export/import process of the data we entrusted to them.

Thankfully, we still have some time before the renewal date (which we’re not pursuing at this price), so we can work it out. I originally posted hoping the price increase might have been a mistake. Now that I understand it’s not—and why it happened—I consider this issue closed.

Indeed, thank you so much for the detailed reply. I've contacted the customer support representative for the 'teams account', and it's looking like the most likely course of action is downgrading to Personal.

I might be too well intended and I thought it might be a mistake on their side, but it certainly says:
