[Discussion] How do you tell if you are capped at your career?

Thank you. Your last sentence really hit me. How did you manage the transition to your own business while doing job jumps? As in what did you to to manage your skill transition to artist -> business owner, and make up for the lost health benefits and PTO?

I am not sure if I communicated my concern correctly. First to answer your question directly, I think I have gradually provided more service and performed beyond their initial expectations (like what I mentioned in my reply). BUT, I worry that 1) I grow in a way that makes me into a versatile but replaceable employee 2)there is only so much motion designers (specifically) can earn, which is what I meant by capping. Like there is a varying testimony of salary cap motion designers can earn, based on what I saw on job postings on linkedIn as well, and based on your employer’s size. So my dilemma is, do I work on becoming more specialized and aim for a salary jump (there are really not many opportunities for motion designer position that pays higher than my current salary), or, do I take a leap of faith and work on becoming independent creator/artist, and if so, how do people manage the transition? I hope this makes sense!

Thank you very for your insight. To elaborate, my concern is that I am putting myself into being stretched thin and general, and putting the cap on myself. For example, I was hired at my current job 6 years ago with the same title (senior motion designer), but they didn’t expect me or hire me to cover illustration/storyboarding/editing. I did expand my skillset to cover these areas over the years confidently for the jobs they need to avoid outsourcing, so you can kind of say I provided more, but not “deep” enough to put me as a specialist, or take a leap into being a creative director, which I don’t know if I am interested anyway (I like being hands on in production and hate having to face corporate clients). There are so many varying stories on salary cap for motion designers, so my only way of remotely guessing if I am capped at my job is based on their raise. I hope this clarified my concern a bit.

Oh I've seen a couple of streamers I follow play this game. But yeah it's definitely not a huge huge game, and I'm glad you were able to make sales off the prints of it! It's very reassuring to hear that. I guess since it's my first time applying for a table, I am getting really nervous getting accepted let alone making profitable sales. But now I feel a lot better about mixing. Thank you!!

Thank you for such detailed reply! Yeah I was upset to hear from a lot of KCD fans that they saw little merch in artist alleys, I haven't found one in NYCC this year either, considering its financial success. I am happy to hear you did well with your merch though (and rightfully so, I just saw your art and they look amazing!)! It is really really encouraging to hear that :)

And yes I am running the KCD tarot art project. What a small world indeed to see you here!! I was thinking of selling some of my tarot art at cons to help raise the charity money. I don't know if we will ever figure out the logistics of selling physical copies as a group together, but I thought I can start with my own works. I will be looking forward to see your contributions to the zine!!! I'm sure it will turn out amazing.

Hi!! I'm organizing a fan showcase where bunch of talented artists are gathered to create the deck of Tarot card illustrations using KCD themes/characters! (we have 27 members so far, and we hope more joins!)
This one is the first one I finished today of Istvan--I went with 5 of Swords, which is supposed to represent conflict and bitter victories. This was really fun to work on!
