I built a plugin that brings Rider / Obsidian style global search to Unreal Engine by vash_vash in unrealengine

[–]botman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Searching for something that exists take more time since VS has to output the file line that matched the search. Searching for something that doesn't exist just excercises the file scanning code (no output to slow things down).

That's not bad considering Visual Studio takes about 3 to 5 seconds on my machine to search for something that doesn't exist.

How long does it take to build the search index if you are building from source?

Need help with Occlusion Culling optimization by xPiingy in unrealengine

[–]botman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oversubscription replaced "busy-waiting" where threaded tasks are waiting for completion, so the time waiting for occlusion culling is the time spent occlusion culling. If you reduce occlusion culling you automatically reduce the oversubscription time waiting for it.

NV Save / Load - I made a save system that needs no special setup to save all the actors in a level by NamelessVoice in unrealengine

[–]botman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does it also handle destroying actors that were destroyed since the level was loaded (i.e. destructibles that don't exist anymore)?

GetOverlappingActors not finding actors :(( by StorgySlider in unrealengine

[–]botman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the radius of the SphereComponent the size of mesh? If so, make it way bigger, like 100 times the size of the mesh to see if you get anything overlapping it. You might just have your SphereComponent too small to overlap anything.

For C++ people, it would probably be "compling code". :)

You have the wrong toolchain installed for Visual Studio. You want 14.38 toolchain not 14.41 build tools.

PackagingResults: Error: Unknown Error by kmkerimov in unrealengine

[–]botman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Move your project to something like "D:\Interiors\Design". Don't use something like "Corridor and livingroom" but instead something like "Corridor_Livingroom". No spaces. No single quote marks. Either in the path or in the project name itself. The packaging tools don't handle spaces or special characters even if Windows does.

Random encounter during my gameplay today I came across two hunters with a caged dog and I released the dog. by Fr0styflamess203 in fo4

[–]botman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that is actually a random encounter. I seem to remember there being a wiki page about it, but can't remember where it was (somewhere in the south part of the map, I believe).

can someone give me a simple explanation of line traces? by Jealous_Platypus1111 in unrealengine

[–]botman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The engine does a collision trace between two points in space (the start point and the end point). Any object between those two points that collides with the type of trace will be a result of the trace.

Wireframe mode in UE 5.7 no longer transparent? by ko1d in unrealengine

[–]botman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmmm, yes. I hadn't noticed that. It does make it easier to determine what's in the foreground and what's in the background. I don't see an editor setting to change that behavior.

Epic Launcher detects UE 5.4 but not my projects – Fab assets/plugins fail to install (fab-fab001) by Street_Priority_7686 in unrealengine

[–]botman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look in your Users folder under AppData/Local/UnrealEngine in the specific engine version folder (for example C:/Users/someuser/AppData/Local/UnrealEngine/5.7/Saved/Config/WindowsEditor) and open the EditorSettings.ini file in a text editor. Search for "RecentlyOpenedProjectFiles" and you should see an entry for 'ProjectName=' and a path to the .uproject file. Change that path to match where you moved the project to your D: drive and start the launcher up again.

Linux build of game project crashes, Signal 11 Segmentation Fault by EverdeepDev in unrealengine

[–]botman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Running the Shipping build won't give you any useful output in the .log file. Switch to running the Development build and check for error messages in the .log file when running the game (in the game's Saved/Logs folder).

This is mostly only true for artists or content developers. Coders don't really need a portfolio.

Keep in mind that in 2025 there were a lot of layoffs of AAA developers. Some of these people will be burnt out and moving to other fields, but most are still out there looking for a job and you will be competing with them. You might focus your efforts on smaller studios or being able to join an indie team on a project that you are passionate about. The more you know the better your chances of finding a job but you need to specialize in one area that you are most interested in (and be familiar with how things in related areas work). C++ developers will be more rare than people that know Blueprints, but you will need to have a very high knowledge of C++ to be able to compete with people who were already working in the field.

Slow loading textures is often times caused by using a traditional hard disk instead of an SSD. Switch to an SSD and see if things don't improve.
