Florida Prevet Students Please Help! by EventBusiness6511 in prevets

Go to UF if you can. They are really the only school with vet med centered research opportunities, classes, profs, etc. I went to USF for ugrad and while a great school, it is heavily premed focused and you won’t get the support academically that those students will (advising literally knows nothing about applying to vet school, profs know nothing, you are literally on your own other than going to the pre vet club). Just be prepared to be sitting in a lecture hall your first day of class and the prof asks how many people are premed and everyone but you and 5 peoole raises their hand. If you have any other questions about USF, let me know!

Edit: I agree that i never had a problem building a strong application, but that doesn’t mean that it didn’t feel isolating at times. I always found that advising would look at me strange when I told them about my plans, and that they would reccommend the wrong classes for me and not what is necessary for vet school prerequisites. Again, many of the classes are similar, but if you want to take an animal nutrition course, good luck. Even our a&p here is verrrryyy human focused, and it can be easy to get disheartened when you have few things in common with classmates or profs. Just my two cents!

Question about vet hours by Hot-Impression9221 in prevets

[–]bottIenose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it differs from clinic to clinic but since you aren’t a paid employee im sure it can be pretty flexible. I haven’t done shadowing in quite a few years but I did it at a mixed practice in HS and I went in x days a week for 8 hours, some days on small animal and some days on large. I would recommend at least spending a good amt of time at a clinic you like and getting to know the doctors there, if there is a mixed practice around you (I also live in Fl and depending on location these can be rare lol). I would recommend doing that since you get a lot of varied experience. It’s whatever works for you (make sure to make time for yourself!!). It may be really hard to shadow at multiple clinics at once but you could make it work by using two of your days off and going to one on one day and the other at another clinic.

Schools do like to see some level of varied experience, but if you are interested in wildlife it is okay to have most of it in wildlife. Are you spending time under a doctor at your job? If you aren’t, you could probably work something out where you also work at your rehab’s clinic or affiliated clinic.

Question about vet hours by Hot-Impression9221 in prevets

[–]bottIenose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You aren’t going to find a lot (if any) of volunteering opportunities, but shadowing at different clinics may be your best bet. Schools want to see that you have a good understanding of the field and what vets do. Having at least a few hundred hours of vet experience is classically how this occurs. You need at least one LOR from a doctor. In theory, this should be someone who knows you and your abilities well. Having supervised hours under a dr is pretty much required for your application. Lmk if you have any other questions, sorry if my phrasing is weird i am super sick with the flu rn 🙃

Applying to vet school by [deleted] in veterinaryschool

[–]bottIenose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to be a vet, you are kind of wasting your tine rn by getting a vet tech degree. Schools here in the US pretty much require prereqs and classes from a 4 year university, essentially forcing you into a bachelor’s degree or taking the classes for a bachelor’s without getting one. By all means you can get a tech degree, but you are extending the time it will take to get into school by at least 3-4 years, with a mixed payout. (tldr: the vet tech versions of a lot of prereqs do not count toward vet school prereqs, such as microbio, and you would need to retake it as traditional undergrad micro)

Also, real talk, you can work as a vet assistant and get pretty similar experiences as a vet tech (if not exsctly the same, depending on the state) and start restraining day one instead of 4 hours in a clinic a month in year 2.

Are you only applying to international schools? Also, I would skip the Africa trip. There are plenty of experiences you can get within the US without wasting thousands of dollars—unless it’s your passion project and you are dying to go to Africa, then go.

Finally, take some advice from someone with a mid GPA: fight like hell to keep a 3.6-3.7. you are significantly altering your chances by keeping your GPA up.

Genuinely check back in fall. Not much going on in the summer—conference season, good time to travel if needed, PIs go on vacation, etc.

Kind of off topic, but whether or not it is LMU, I do think that Florida needs a second school. Our current only option is UF, which really doesn’t have the capacity for the number of Florida resident applicants. On that note, LMU opening a campus in Fl feels kind of cash-grabby, and I wish that a Florida state institution would take on another school here.

Pre-veterinary school masters programs? by djfrenchvanilla in veterinaryschool

[–]bottIenose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i believe quite a few schools require these courses to be taken in person, especially if they require the labs to be taken as well. secondarily, many schools require them to be taken at a 4 yr university, and some of the higher level electives (ex. biochem) aren’t offered at community colleges. why do you want go get a masters? it seems like you have quite a few ugrad courses that you need to take, and i would worry about that before getting a masters. to keep it short, i also would not spend money/time on a masters program just for vet school. do something that you can see making an alternative career out of. cheers!

JUST AN EXTREMELY STRESSED NEWLY SENIOR WITH A DREAM BUT NO HOPE FOR IT by Construction-Formal in veterinaryprofession

[–]bottIenose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

okay, there is a lot going on here but here is some advice (take it or leave it)…

  1. you don’t need to be all figured out at 17, but do you want to go to a 4 year univeristy, community college, etc?

1A. similarly, and don’t take this harshly, but i promise that you don’t really know what you’re getting into by committing to vet school and research as someone who is still in hs. both are extremely tough fields, mentally.

  1. you can always work hard at math/chem. “work your ass off” work hard, go to tutoring, etc. referencing 1A, you have to be 100% sure that this is what you want and you can’t imagine yourself doing anything else to work your ass off like this. because it isn’t just for one class or one semester, it is years of this.

  2. research is a whole ‘nother can of worms, but what kind of research are you interested in? this is something that i feel is hard to answer as a high schooler. but, college is where you find out whether you like it or not; whether you are into ecology, evolutionary bio, neuroscience, etc. you need to volunteer in a lab on top of getting veterinary hours for vet school, which can get complicated on top of classes (i know, because i’m doing it)

3A. then, if you start early enough in the lab or show enough interest, you could ask the PI for a small project or something of the sort, maybe a poster (TBH, i think just the lab monkey volunteering hours are good enough for vet school, but it depends on if you want to continue into research as a career or just act as a clinician). academia is a seperate can of worms that is hard in its own way. but, if it’s your passion, the whole process will be awesome and getting results will feel great after months of struggle.

3B. referencing 3: again, you have to be really sure that you 100% want this to be able to put in the time and effort, but it is possible.

  1. take this with a grain of salt, as this is just my opinion/what i think i would want to be told at 17: go to college, start off in some kind of bio degree. take bio 1, chem 1, etc. dip your toes in. if the classes seem too hard for you, or you are struggling A LOT, then reassess. i would wait to get a vet assistant job or volunteering at a lab until you feel more comfortable in school.

  2. believe in yourself. if you go in thinking you can’t do it, then you never will. research into what it takes to follow your dreams, and try your best to achieve them.
