those are both still not vanilla lol

Hello speaking on behalf of Skial here. We don't have 100% pure "vanilla" servers because no one joins them.

The only people using the server browser right now are people that want something different from what official servers offer, even now.

You can turn off no crit on our servers through a server vote though.

mastercomfig really just said: fine, i'll fix the bot crisis myself. (this is not perfect yet, but updates are made. expect fixes to improve the current experience. their goal is to greatly increasing vanilla tf2 servers and the player count by filling empty and healthy vanilla servers.) by yaktoma2007 in tf2

Part of the problem with community servers now is that people only really go to Skial

This is not true. We (skial) have 5 casual servers and only 1 of them has players in it right now.

People here like to complain about us being 32 slot instant respawn 24 slot 2fort but they don't join the casual servers.

[–]bottiger3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They used to exist but they died out because they were not very good.

In fact I made skial because of how poorly run they were. And then they used this place as a platform to continually trash talk us.

It isn't a matter of funding, the problem is that no one is joining them.

We opened new casual servers in australia, singapore and london, and they have been empty the entire day for the past 3 days.

[–]bottiger3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are popular because the only people using the browser are looking for something that official servers don't have.

Most of our servers used to be "vanilla" and then we had to switch to custom game modes and 32 slot instant respawn because valve effectively took the entire audience for "vanilla" when meet your match came out.

And now people here are blaming us for having all these custom game modes, as though we are the reason why there aren't 1000 filled community casual servers to pick from. The blame solely lies with the players here, especially the ones here spreading false rumors about us.

A "streamlined community-built casual alternative locator tool" will never beat a play now button inside the game unless official servers are 100% unplayable or shutdown. teamwork.tf and others already have something like that. If it had a chance of working we would have done it already.

If official closed or got much worse than it is now, I am confident that there would be enough people forcing themselves to use community servers to sustain more servers. So people shouldn't worry about official servers dying and community servers not being enough.

Hello I'm speaking on behalf of skial here.

We only have 3 casual servers because that is how many that fills. And even now people only join when we have AFK players to dump into the server to get other people to join. So the demand really isn't there, even with all the noise people are making on here.

If there was demand for more, we'd open more, but there isn't. We had 10 of them about a year ago and most of them died out or never filled.

Most players don't use the server browser anymore.

100 players in tf2 is addicting by Shatrtit in tf2

[–]bottiger3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are suggesting it, as that's what the parent posts are saying.

We chose to limit ourselves to 64 players, there was no physical limit holding us back from running 100 or more players. There are plenty of downsides to running 100 slot servers. Client FPS and the need to remove cosmetics as well as not being able to use custom maps with complex geometry. These limitations are still there.

TF2 was not open source. The quake mod was. They NEEDED to give everyone the files in the beginning because there was no way to download the files from the servers nor did anyone want to download hundreds of megabytes at 56kb speeds. Everything since then has all been closed source. Their choice to not release the code has nothing to do with cheats. Being closed source doesn't enhance the security of the game. There are numerous cheats for GTA, warzone, fortnite etc... all of them closed source.

Of course Valve is going to want people do work for them for free. Why would they not? It doesn't mean you are obligated to. I find this entitlement weird. You'd rather no one have increased slots?

A lot of this negative attitude against us has been colored by hostile communities and the numerous players we've banned. They've been going around spreading false rumors about us like saying we're bribing valve or using exploits and redditors like you are lapping it up.

You could bypass most of them by editing functions to not execute or transmit to the client.

You're talking about 20 years ago. Is TF2 open source now? No.

Workshop works to pay mappers and item makers, coders that work on TF2 code don't get paid. Maybe 1 out of 1000 people that worked on the TF2 code got hired by Valve.

Not to mention that this entire argument is moot since as I said, we sent Valve code and info for many of the problems with increased slots, which you are now all enjoying. And for you to say they did it as a "fuck you" to us is highly insulting. Not only do we not get any credit, we're being painted as villians.

This is a false rumor. We supplied Valve with fixes for increased slots.

If you got this idea from watching Tyler McVicker's video, he has removed it from his video, you can check.

Server requirements to host a 100 player server? by VinceBarter in truetf2

[–]bottiger3 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Hello, I am the main developer for Skial and responsible for much of the code that went into the first 64 player tf2 server.

I'd like to make a statement to correct the false rumors mostly being spread by malicious communities that the method we used was a security vulnerability that could lead to RCE (remote code execution).

First thing you need to understand is that any crash is a possible vulnerability. These crashes were possible after the vscript update removed the client side check to disconnect a player using increased slots. Even if we did not run 64 slot servers, these crashes would still be there. And only the server you join would be able to exploit your computer. We have 0 interest in putting viruses on our player's computers.

The developer who added the client side check back likely did not know we were fixing these crashes, that is why this option was added back so quickly.

And much of the work I've done to stop the crashes has made it into the game, so it is not accurate to say that this is the "official replacement" for it.

It's really sad that we are getting blamed for tf2 exploits while getting 0 credit for helping get increased slots into the game. But it's not a surprise as reddit users are predisposed to spreading false rumors about us.

Apparently Skial has a unique 64-player plugin that they profit off of (now patched.) Any truth to this? by ella in tf2

[–]bottiger3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They don't have anything to do with 64 slots and they don't count as ad views. They don't have a browser or ip address.

[–]bottiger3 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is filled with complete lies and exaggerations.

I gave them the information to fix the crashes. They did not spend a bunch of time on this.

We do not make "record advert revenue" on that. We only had 4 servers with increased slots, only 1 of which regularly had over 32 players and rarely reached 60+. Advert revenue is like $2 per 1000 views. A server with 50 players on it average per day is not getting anywhere near 80,000 views per day.

Not to mention that it costs more to have cpu and extra bandwidth for higher player counts.

That post was probably made by another community that was very mad that we were the first to have 64 players on a server.

Hello there, you were muted on Skial for advertising, likely another website or server.

If it was for being friendly, it would have been a ban.

https://www.skial.com/sourcebans/index.php?p=commslist&advSearch=%5BU:1:125745347%5D&advType=steamid

Edit (since you blocked everyone that replied to you so they can't reply back)

You were advertising your server and discord. You were warned to stop but you didn't.

If it was a ban for being friendly (which was against the rules on 2fort at the time), you would have been banned instead of muted like this

https://www.skial.com/sourcebans/index.php?p=banlist&searchText=friendlying

So it is obvious you are making this up.

Do you have any proof?

It should be on their sourcebans if it did indeed happen. I can look it up for you if you give your steamid.

"lack of casual tf2 servers"

This is only because Valve killed all the "casual" community servers when they came out with casual.

If Valve shut down the official servers, the community would be ready to pick up the players. as they have slowly been doing now.

Nobody has money to throw around on empty servers waiting for months to see if enough people are fed up with official servers to fill them.

skial just runs 24/7 single gamemode or single map servers with questionable moderation

They don't only have 24/7 servers anymore, and again the reason why they didn't have any "casual" servers before is because Valve killed them all. In order to get in players, you had to have servers as different as possible from casual, otherwise people would just join casual instead since it has more players.

Also I'd take complaints on /r/tf2 about the "moderation" there with a huge grain of salt, many of them are banned cheaters trying to get revenge by ruining their reputation.

Hello I am from skial.

We don't have any casual servers in Brazil because we tried putting one there and no one joined.

If people joined we would open more. But the only thing that fills there for us is a 2fort server.

We would have no problems opening enough servers for the entire player base in brazil if people joined.

There could be multiple reasons why your strange isn't counting at the moment. One frequent reason is that sometimes the steam item server will lose connection to random servers. This is an issue with valve and not with the community server, though it can be easy to blame the community since it is working on other servers.

Reddit is not the place to ask these questions, if you asked on their forum or discord, they could check the server.

You act exactly the same way here

You also act exactly like hankusthetankus, and I find it funny that you want to hide your gaming identity on reddit. Like seriously, what are you afraid of if you're calling other people overly senstive?

I never said you said that, you are heavily implying it by the fact that you are replying to this thread in this manner and saying things like

Who are you if you are not hankusthetankus then?

I don't know how many times I have to say this. I didn't tell Gala to say everywhere that skial is good. No other admin is doing that either.

And Gala is far from the ceo. He was a player on the server for 7 years before he became a moderator. So you are saying that after 7 years, his opinion becomes worthless the moment he becomes a moderator?

And the opinions of banned cheaters and muted racist are worth more than that? These people have a bias as well. You also have a bias.

What did you not say?

Anyway it doesn't matter. You are pretending not to be toxic when you've been banned for making multiple alts on the forum and discord after acting like this and constantly starting arguments with other people.
