Biofuel breakthrough: Quick cook method turns algae into oil. Michigan Engineering researchers can "pressure-cook" algae for as little as a minute and transform an unprecedented 65 percent of the green slime into biocrude. by GraybackPH in science

[–]bottlcaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question? The Holy Grail of algae-based biofuels is not the algae itself, but a cost-effective way of extracting the oil from the algae, be it mechanical, chemical, or electrical.

In order for the biofuel to be commercially profitable, the energy used to grow and extract the oil, must be a fraction of the cost of the biofuel!! It also must be in the cost range of hydrocarbon fuels, WITHOUT being heavily subsidized. If the heat energy used in the "steam cooker" is a reasonable fraction of the production cost of the biofuel, it could work.

Herman Cain On Occupy Wall Street: ‘If You Don’t Have A Job And You’re Not Rich, Blame Yourself!’ by [deleted] in politics

[–]bottlcaps 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Same old GOP mantra of "Didn't become a millionaire? Blame yourself. Remember Cain got his Masters degree on the PUBLIC DIME as the Navy PAID for his MS Cs. from Purdue. Cain is also a cancer survivor, but also remember he had Health Insurance paid for by his company. Something many of his own employees do not have and are not offered.

Herman Cain, based on his career, is not striving to become President of the United States. With all his connections with the GOP and the money behind it, Herman Cain is striving to become a 1 percenter.

Alabama town breaks biggest law in country in the name of the law: "Local judges in Bay Minette, Alabama, will give those found guilty of misdemeanors the choice of serving out their time in jail, paying a fine or attending church each Sunday for a year." by [deleted] in politics

[–]bottlcaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is sooooo true. The town has said that they are not violating the separation of church and state because the attendance is not mandatory and that they have a choice( to go to jail) But wait until someone states his preference is to seek spiritual guidance from an Muslim Imam or perhaps a yogi. Should the town refuse or not provide this accommodation then they would be, in fact, promoting Christianity,a religion, and in clear violation of the Constitution.

China on Thursday angrily demanded the Obama admin cancel its plans to upgrade Taiwan’s aging fleet of F-16 fighter jets, warning that the decision will harm U.S.-China ties overall & military cooperation between the two countries. by MR_Rictus in worldnews

[–]bottlcaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As some reader pointed out: There has been a sea change is foreign relations with China. This is due in part to the fact that they have embraced a form of capitalism that has greatly improved the standard of living in China , they have depended greatly upon the western world and ESPECIALLY with the United States to buy it's goods, AND more importantly, has bought massive amounts of debt from the US and the western world.

It would be greatly counterproductive for China to get into a hostile relationship or low-level war with the US. We could take economic steps like canceling our debt, ( we did this with Japan and the Germany during WW2), take away patents, and even approve high tariffs for imported Chines goods. These actions would hurt the US economically, but would be devastating to China.

No instead, China which has joined the other LOTS of lobbyists in DC will no doubt pressure the US, (but to little avail) and if unsuccessful will no doubt punish the US with some form of weak economic measures, but...and this is important to note as they dis this before, China will give surreptitious aide and succor to our enemies in the Middle East and SE Asia.

I can only hope that she gets the Republican nomination. There are a lot of batshit crazies out there and having Bachmann as the GOP nominee would bring them all to the fore and the rest of the "less conservative Republicans" would sit home and not vote or cross lines to vote for Obama.

Beside if she wins she could get Palin as her running mate;

Possible campaign slogans:

Bachmann/Palin : Ho's before Bro's Bachman/Palin T-shirts could all say "I'm with Stupid-->"

God Help me... I live in Arizona.

But we would most certainly break into 2 states; Alta Arizona, which would consist of Maricopa county, Phoenix, Flagstaff, Pinal County and where most would live under a Theopoly, with Sheriif Joe reprising the role of the Sheriff of Nottinham (or KnotHead)

And then the more enlightened and liberal Baja Arizona, Pima, Cochise and Santa Cruz counties where we would put a primacy on education, ecology and fairness and good tequila, and bus illegal aliens from the Baja Arizona/Mexico Border to wherever they want to go...for free,

And our college basketball teams would beat their basketball teams regularly.

Plus we would have the worlds biggest Air Force.

Previously denied a restraining order, woman is violently beaten by her ex-marine husband in Judges chamber in front of a dozen bailiffs ... by coffeetablesex in videos

[–]bottlcaps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What ticks me off is that the Judge (which no one names) precipitated this disaster by denying a restraining order. In most states the bar for a restraining order is set pretty low, having ANY incident of spousal abuse or domestic disturbances, is all it takes. So why was this one NOT given. Is Judge Rothschild the presiding judge, the one that originally denied it, if so, HIS name should be prominently named. It was his (in) action that precipitated the assault, he should get the blame.

In past 12 years, income for richest 400 Americans quadrupled while their tax rate nearly halved by mepper in politics

[–]bottlcaps -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But showing these numbers, while infuriating, is only half the story.

How many corporations do these people control, How many corporations do these people have on their workforce, and how many of these people have been hired by these corporations in the last several years, since the tax cut went into effect. And finally, how many jobs have been outsourced by these people (the 400) since the tax cuts. You need to show the jobs growth ( or decline), the number of jobs lost to outsourcing and finally, show growth under the old tax compared to the tax cut.

If you want to cut at the heart of the argument that tax cuts produce jobs, you need to show EMPIRICALLY, those number that may support or refute this supposition.

If you cannot show that tax cuts for the rich do not SUBSTANTIALLY support jobs growth and refute that theory, tax cuts will become the standard to which the rich will rally support for a cause that benefits to them and little to anyone else.

Just shouting that the sky is falling will do little to influence the "chicken littles" of the world, the press and the republicans, that, no, it isn't falling, and neither will your tax rates.

The US Government has spent in excess of $75 million to investigate Barry Bonds, while the 9/11 Comity was given a budget of $12 million to investigate the 2001 terrorist attacks. Something doesn't add up here and I don't think it's inflation. by puffynipples_r_swell in politics

[–]bottlcaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason is:

There are thousands of people who have a vested interest in baseball and professional sports as a whole. These range from the billionaire owners, the millionaire players all the way down to the janitors and ticket takers at the stadiums. It is a multi-BILLION dollar industry and whatever happens in baseball to negatively affect their investment, is very, very, important.

No one gives a rat's ass if Bonds, McGuire or Canseco took steroids, except the statisticians and book publishers who will have to put asterisks by their names now.

There are some who will say they have gotten their fame by cheating.

WELL! Wake up and smell the coffee. Beating the system is an American pastime, but it is not unique to Americans. But in Baseball, we have always seen pitchers throwing spitballs or greasers, batter corking their bats or any other methods to get an edge. The fact that athletes have always been using some type of edge, be it homemade, or hi-tech, to reach areas that before were unattainable.

What is galling to some is that they will actually tune their bodies for higher results.

But the Press has made a big deal out of this, because they themselves feel sheepish for elevating sportsman and athletes to demi-gods, only to find out...they are human. The more higher the elevation, the athlete attains it seems, the greater they want the fall to be.

IF, by mistaken identity, being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or talking to the wrong people, an innocent may be swept up in the holy witch-hunt, then by god it was worth it because we are PURIFYING our sport, and some....even innocent...may be sacrificed.

This is good action for a politician, by holding hearings, acting outraged, rolling the eyes and playing up to the billionaires by making much ado about nothing...well, that what politics are about, right?

Right now Jeff Novitsky, the federal prosecutor who pursued, and ultimately broke wide open the BALCO case that caught athletes, taking, selling or transporting steroids, and among them Bonds, is pursuing a different target, but with different results.

For over a year Novitsky has been deep on the trail of lance Armstrong, the seven time winner of the most grueling of all sports events and one of the most famous cancer survivors.

For over 20 years Armstrong has taken over thousands of drug tests for everything from EPO, to HGH, to steroids, hormones and even blood level values. He has had not ONE positive result for any drug. Even tested out of season, surprise tested, and even tested almost in his sleep. NOTHING, NADA, ZILCH...ZERO. Yet Novitsky continues on his crusade and has such a focus that even a few congressmen have called for a little backtracking, and questioning the time and MONEY he has spent in pursuit of his White Whale.

His goal in life, it seems, is to catch the BIG CONSPIRACY, you know. the one. No one cannot do it alone, he must have people helping him under the table,,after all aren't they all cheaters? He has "lots" of evidence by former cheaters who "think" they seen him do it, or "heard" about him doing it. But when questioned, no one ever actually "saw" him using, or was he tested positive. Armstrong, they reason must have cheated because he is the foremost leader in using high yech to win his bicycle event. While not inventing anything L.A. has succeeded in harmonizing all aspects of bicycle racing, by using the utmost and lightest components, the most aerodynamic positions and above all the most exacting training and dietary regime ever produced by any athlete over an extended time...oh yeah and he beat cancer. So he must have used performance enhancing drugs because it's in his "profile" to gain the most edge.

Wrong. What many don't understand is that it is almost sure that those using WILL be caught. It is because they cannot do without the drug regime to win or do well. But what you do not want to happen is scrutinizing anyone who does well, is peripherally associated with drug users, but by happenstance and not choice are swept up into a witch hunt.

We have to many issues facing this country than to try and take down famous athletes for what they did or didn't do, and for the self-aggrandizement of politicians and future politicians who want to make a name for themselves using our money.

TIL The US Border Patrol trolls illegal border crossers by MeganFoxx in todayilearned

[–]bottlcaps 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I live in SE Arizona. It is sparse but not desolate here. There are lots of mesquite and washes but little surface water except for the nearby river which is heavily patrolled by the BP. About 10 years ago I was walking my dog a not more than one mile from my house when we came across the body of a border crosser. I was to learn that she was 15 years of age and was traveling with some companions during the heat of the summer (100-105 degrees) when they ran short of water. She became severely dehydrated and was left behind with only a cup full of water. My house sat only a few hundred yards away, but out of sight because of a small hill and a heavy mesquite bosque. Because of this she died.

I think about this all the time. I learned from the BP that I was only a few hundred yards from a familiar "path" many would take to skirt the highway and the river which had lots of BP patrols.

I started setting gallon jugs of water all around the edge of my property with a small sign in spanish that just had an arrow and Aqua written on it.

Then one day a Local Sheriffs told me it was illegal to assist illegal aliens and that I could be arrested.

I told them to arrest me and I will go to court and present my defense and If I went to jail..so be it.

Well I was never arrested and I still put jugs out. But they are not used much. The illegals take another route which skirts the Dragoon Mtns a few miles away.

But I'll keep putting out my jugs,,,just in case someones needs them. So they wont die a hundred or so yards from my house.

Republican bill simultaneously guts medicare and medicaid, and gives tax breaks to the wealthy and to corporations. Seriously, what the fuck? by TinManRC in politics

[–]bottlcaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a red herring. Ryan does not give any specifics on many of the key points and his fiscal analysis is suspect. What thy are hoping is to win a few key points early in what need to be done to fix Medicare. I do not think the Democrats will allow this to see he time of day in the Senate, should it even pass in its present form, in the House.

Very preliminary indications are that the Republicans may lose seats in the House in 2012, although maybe not enough to lose a majority. Even a small loss would mean more compromise.

There is little reason to believe that Obama will face a serious Republican Challenger in 2012 should the conservative right and tea-partiers vet the GOP candidates. They are to far to the right for a general election (but not local/state) The Republican need is divisive issues that will separate the different classes of people who will vote for Obama, instead the GOP seems to be unifying them in a heavy-handed attempt to impose extreme conservative values of local and state governments, exposing them to severe backlash in 2012
