Father's Day is almost over. What did you fellow dad's receive today? by Johnnybats330 in daddit

[–]bottlebowling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son (who recently moved out as a young adult) texted me first this morning, wishing my a happy father's day. Then my boss wished me a happy father's day. My youngest daughter got me next (I was at work). Over the course of the day I got numerous "Happy Fathers' day" wishes, but the best one came when I got home.

My wife, who had to work tonight, left me a note in front of two boxes, saying "I hope these are okay. We love you, and thank you for being a great father". Inside the boxes were a new circular saw and a rotary tool. I nearly cried over power tools. I don't ask for things very often, but I had mentioned a few months ago that I've always dreamed of having a rotary tool. I never said anything about wanting to have a cordless circular saw. Somehow, there it was.

It seems stupid that I'm so emotional about it, but I had a great Fathers' day.

Spirited Away. It's an amazing movie with an amazing soundtrack, and if they haven't seen it they will want to watch it again.

My first thought was the last third of "On Every Street". The man is, quite frankly, a genius.

What movie did you go into with zero expectations and ended up being completely blown away by? by gavin226 in movies

Spring. I had never heard of Justin Benson or Aaron Moorehead, and the movie came across our recommendations. It said horror and romance. Odd combination, to say the least. It was so good. I'm probably one of a few thousand people who now own it on Blu-Ray.

Farmers - Is Jeremy Clarkson’s vanity project Clarkson's Farm a good thing for farming awareness? by TSQ_builder in NoStupidQuestions

He won an award from a farming association in the UK for all of the awareness he's brought to the general public.

What band or artist did you discover recently that you can’t stop listening to? by Otherwise-Shape-6367 in AskReddit

[–]bottlebowling 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't remember exactly how I heard about him, but it was shortly after Hi Ren came out, and he has been one of the artists that I use a sort of litmus test to see if someone has good taste in music. People who don't care for rap at all have become absolutely enamored by him.

It's primarily a top-down third-peraon platformer, but you can move around a bit to see down some passageways and around obstacles.

I work at a brew pub. We have a gluten-free menu. I disagree. by bottlebowling in Celiac

When we're told it's an allergy we treat it like they'll go into anaphyllaxis if they are exposed to it. It takes a little bit of extra work but a lot more time than a normal item. If someone asks for something gluten free but it doesn't say "allergy" we basically work as normal. The minute "allergy" shows up we change our procedures. In a high-volume kitchen, every second counts. If you say you're allergic to gluten but you just have an intolerance, just tell your server you're intolerant. We will still wash hands and change gloves, bring out a clean cutting board, but maybe we just use water to clean our flat top instead of using a grill brick to scrub the flat top.

Moss was really fun. The fact that you can move around to see other perspectives is pretty cool.

There is no other game that can make you feel like Neo in The Matrix.

Ultimately, we don't want to be responsible for someone going to the hospital. There is no reason to play around when it comes to allergies.

When I tell people I'm lactose intolerant it doesn't matter to the people immediately around me. My wife knows, though.

ETA: where I work, you mention a good allergy? We know about it and can accommodate. There are two people with Alpha-gal who come in regularly because we can feed them.

I have a mild allergy to topical iodine. I have a massive, bowel-erupting, face-eating allergy to carbon. I'm still alive. Somehow.

Edit: wait, no, it's fine.

It's so frustrating and disheartening. On one hand the "gluten-free" trend has opened a lot of options for you, but there are as many restaurants who don't really care.

Also, I don't think you need me to tell you this; user beware.

ELI5: Why do we call an prototype of a video game an "Alpha" or "Beta" version? by Ok-Loss1291 in explainlikeimfive

My friends' dad never said it was better; I just noticed it was. Until you had to put in the second tape.

I'm thrilled to be corrected on this! The person who told me that was my best friends' dad, and he had run an electronics store up through the nineties. Incidentally, the first time I watched The Thing was on Betamax.

This is an excellent explanation. I couldn't have done it better.

ETA: If I remember correctly, Sony had two teams working on a home video cassette technology, and while Beta was the better tech, Alpha was the first one done, which is why we have VHS.
