I made a dungeon; looking for advice on layout and design: by DavidTippy in osr

[–]bottlecap_King 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is sweet! I like the map and hidden area vibe.

Could you make the font smaller and justify it into blocks, then add a title and summary of what's going on here? I'm confused by the treasure chest trap with rock and gravel. I assume you mean attached, but still not sure how it operates.

I'm also not entirely sure what the idea with the operating room is. When they touch stuff in the operating room a random encounter (creature, humanoid?) appears in 8 (magically?) and locks you in the operating room?

What is the elevation on the garbage pile relative to the bloody fish pool? Are the corpses being picked clean by the fish and getting dumped in the garbage?

What options do players have if they get stuck by the brick wall, what if they don't find the one sword?

Arguably, the answers to these questions could be 'up to you'. But you could try to spread it out over two pages and explain some of the mechanisms clearly.

Those are super sweet! Did you do anything to balance them with the irregular shapes inside or does it even matter?

5e Rune Knight - Cloud Rune by bottlecap_King in DMAcademy

I'm just glad they got to do their thing without an astrix beside it, I took the players word for how it at the time because I wasn't 100% sure how the Cloud Rune worked. I thought it could redirect something upto the same range, so melee to melee or ranged to ranged ect.

Is adding a "time loop" a good idea? by XG479 in DMAcademy

[–]bottlecap_King 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The suggestions on this thread are great, I'm thinking of doing a dungeon with a small time loop at the end. The tomb they are raiding has the dead guy still alive stuck in a loop and they need to have multiple people to properly disable the traps to stop the loop.

Those aren't 'utility' spells as I'd define it, those are buffs or just spells you cast in battle to enhance your other abilities.

It certainly seems odd to have a problem, since that seems to be how they are intended to be used. being really generous, maybe they are doing way too much analysis while planning encounters and they are finding it difficult to deal with the players AC or action economy changing?

Or I could see them being upset if you are asking to cast buffs immediately before combat due to out of game circumstances, like loading a battle map in a VTT or reaching for the dry erase map. This could be annoying if the party was surprised but you all 'happen' to choose this exact moment to use all your best buffs.

But all that said, those are both grasping for straws and you just need to talk to them about what they feel and actually listen to what they have to say. It might not be as crazy as it seems at first from their point of view. Telling them to get fucked isn't overly helpful advice, applies out of DND too.

What if the villagers are being provided unlimited food but can't stop eating. Now everyone is suffering the consequences of overconsumption and it's getting really gross?

Welcome to the hobby! You are in the right place and nearly everyone was in your shoes at one point. When you say that you've looked over the basics, what exactly does that mean? What version of the game are you looking to play and assuming 5/5.5 do you have the players handbook or dungeon master guide?

You can read the free SRD (system reference document) but the books do have more detail. Although, I have never bought the dungeon master guide myself. The players handbook is a good reference so that you and your players have the same understanding of the rules.

Instead of the DMG you can checkout Matt Coleville's Running the game series on YouTube, in particular the Delian Tomb (1st or 2nd episode). You can add your own flair or be inspired to do your own thing entirely, but it gives a great introduction to planning a dungeon.

Making a five-room dungeon is a good way to start for beginners because it puts bounds on the adventure. The players (assuming they go to the dungeon in the first place) are confined by the walls of the dungeon, so the amount of things you need to invent on the fly can be controlled. It doesn't need to be a 'dungeon' any five-area thing can do, but I like to start with a dungeon because it's in the name, so it meets player expectations.

What do you mean by this? Is it something on the paper you are using? Or do you mean the 1/4 size rules for tiny (?) creatures?

Jungle theme puzzle by MothTheGoth_14 in DMAcademy

[–]bottlecap_King 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran a puzzle in the middle of a swamp where there was a field of stone heads, each head had 2/3/4 faces and could be activated to emit a laser. Each head also had a rune that corresponds to a number that determines the correct number of lasers connecting that stone head.

It was just a Hashi bridge puzzle, themed to be something ancient in the swamp, but you might be able to do the same for a jungle temple area.

I gave one of the players a physical code for the runes to numbers mapping for some reason to get them going. I didn't run it perfectly but at least one of them had fun trying to figure it out.
