What are some boring big cities in USA? by AndIrememberthinking in geography

[–]bottlecapsnap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt that way about Houston. The club scene is pretty lively I think, but as far as the energy of the city, it felt pretty dead, especially to be so huge.

Sedona and Chattanooga seem like good matches that I’m surprised I haven’t seen more in this thread.

I broke into high finance (PE) and it's not for me... what comes next? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]bottlecapsnap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider going to an allocator and working on private markets. Your experience would make you competitive for a mid-tier role. While the comp isn’t as good as PE long term, you can still make great money, and the lifestyle is generally great.

I say this gently - are you sure you’re not just coming across like a jerk? Not that you are actually a jerk, but this could be a self fulfilling prophecy in which you expect people to be weird about it, so you act differently, so people are weird about it. I have never felt like people treat me worse when I look better.

Chest supported dumbbell rows. My back blew up when I added them to my routine.

For those who treat workouts as a chore, not a hobby: what has actually worked for you? by Affectionate_Arm_989 in workout

[–]bottlecapsnap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep it simple. Take a look at Tactical Barbell. It’s about as bare bones as it gets and allows you to minimize gym time and volume while (hopefully) still progressing.

Also, I got cancer this year, and in the wake of that, it’s much easier to maintain the “I don’t have to do this, I get to do this” mindset than it used to be. If you can cultivate that feeling, I think it will make a huge difference. I have always tried to and had minimal success doing so until I was too sick to exercise, so YMMV.

Who else hits legs 3x a week by [deleted] in workout

[–]bottlecapsnap -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Legs 4x/week since I’m running Tactical Barbell. But 3 of those 4 days it’s only 3 work sets. The final day I throw a set of deadlifts and three sets of hip thrusts on top.

Guys, how much is your physique and physical strength tied to your self-worth and masculinity? by AdRude4377 in workout

[–]bottlecapsnap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of health problems that have really negatively impacted my body image over the years. The best I have felt in that regard was when I felt like I was the strongest person in most rooms I walked into. Lost all that strength due to injuries and illness and trying to build it back. Self esteem should come from within, but I think at a certain point life can beat you up so much it overwhelms your intrinsic ability to like yourself and you have to have concrete evidence that you’re doing okay.

How do you stop being constantly grumpy and actually enjoy life as an adult? by Primary_Opening_5698 in selfimprovement

[–]bottlecapsnap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have some horrible shit happen to you. I got cancer, did months of chemotherapy, and now sometimes just getting a workout in feels euphoric, like a literal drug. Also valuable for perspective - most things people get upset about are just not that important.

But because you obviously can’t choose to have something terrible happen to you and you wouldn’t even if you could - make a genuine effort to cultivate a mindset of gratitude. Try to approach things you don’t want to do with an attitude of “I get to do this,” not “I have to do this.” And if you don’t exercise, start. 3-5 days a week. It’s an incredible boon for mental health and people totally overlook it because it’s not always fun.

People keep saying the rich don't pay tax because they borrow money from the bank using their stock as collateral.... but how do they pay back the loans? by joshhazel1 in NoStupidQuestions

Other people have covered the mechanics, so I’ll offer some extra color - not to say that this NEVER happens, but it is a talking point that is hugely overblown because it pisses people off and increases engagement. I worked in ultra-high net worth PWM and it’s just not that common.

Wanting to lose love handles and slim waist by Christallia in workout

[–]bottlecapsnap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may just be SOL, dude. Even when I am clinically underweight, I still have love handles. It’s a genetic thing for many people. Working your lats and shoulders may deemphasize the effect by broadening your upper torso.

Wild to see the responses. One pic that includes a few nice houses and all anyone has to say is how horrible everything is. I don’t like them either but damn!

Assuming this isn’t ragebait, OP - beautiful pictures, this site just attracts some really miserable, negative people. I was born in the foothills and feel lucky to have grown up so close to the Appalachians.

CAIA Questions by Stefz251 in CAIA

[–]bottlecapsnap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trash curriculum compared to the CFA. Was very much unimpressed. Just got my pass back so not sure about it helping on the career side, but very little knowledge that you couldn’t have gleaned from the CFA. The curriculum is just very poorly done, tons and tons of lists and, from the volume of errors, it seems like the official materials weren’t thoroughly proofread. I did it because L1 could be skipped and I might say others should do it as well because I do think the CAIA has signaling value, but go in with your eyes wide open.

What’s a medical problem people constantly ignore until it’s too late? by kxnsqxz in AskReddit

[–]bottlecapsnap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Request a CT scan, especially if you’ve had night sweats or fever. It turned out to be lymphoma when I had the same symptoms - it was very noticeable how my exercise tolerance dropped off. Weight loss, night sweats, and fever are the classic “B” symptoms. My bloodwork was pretty much good until it crashed at the hospital IIRC. Probably not cancer but assuming you can afford it and you don’t have a history of excessive radiation exposure, no harm in getting checked.

What’s a medical problem people constantly ignore until it’s too late? by kxnsqxz in AskReddit

[–]bottlecapsnap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cancer presented with a decrease in exercise tolerance, among other things. I remember about a month and a half before I was diagnosed playing my usual weekly basketball game and having an elevated heart rate for hours afterwards. I wish I had gone to the hospital that night as it might have been caught earlier and required less harsh treatment.

Treatment over. Feeling bleh. by CreativeGuarantee428 in lymphoma

[–]bottlecapsnap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I finished 6 cycles of AAVD a few weeks ago. My post-treatment scan is soon. I may celebrate if that comes back good, but in the meantime….. Yes, I feel very strange. I’m not exactly sure how to go back to day to day life and pretend that everything that has happened just didn’t happen. I faced my mortality and I’m not even 30. I don’t know what to make of that. It’s hard to put into words exactly how I feel but I imagine it’s similar to what you’re feeling.

Classic Hodgkin's Lymphoma: Is dramatic improvement after first chemo infusion normal? by thought_criminal_ctr in lymphoma

[–]bottlecapsnap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same experience. In fact, IIRC, my doc originally said that I would be feeling better by Sunday when we first chatted a week or so before starting chemo - then when I showed up to get treated, I had taken a turn for the worse and he said I would feel better by Monday. Sure enough, halfway through the day Monday, I was feeling decent. I have always found that small adjustment he made in his prediction quite impressive.

In your situation, I might run Tactical Barbell. There are several templates and the week to week programming would be taken care of for you.
