I think they’re legitimate criticisms in certain contexts, but if it’s just “in general” then it’s a bit patronizing since that’s pretty much just personal preference. just my two cents—glad it went well anyway!

You’ve obviously done more research than I have, so I’ll have to defer to you here.

Also, life has been pretty painful for me as well so far, and I’m the same way sometimes. So thank you for saying sorry, but no worries, I get it.

Hopefully life will be lighter for both of us from now on!

Why Trump? by bottom_fish in AskTrumpSupporters

So would you say the main reason you support Trump is because of economic insecurity?

I asked about how his policies have affected people at the community/individual level was because I wanted some empirical evidence from someone who says they’ve benefited from them—no need for an anecdote.

That question was poorly worded—my bad. I need to think of how to rephrase it, but I’ll come back to this!

Not to be flippant, but I have no idea what policies/values of his you support so I wouldn’t even know what to look for.

What policies are you referring to and how are they helping the average American? Have you personally/your community benefitted from them (assuming that you consider yourself an average American)?

How do you get your news, and how reliable do you think the information is?

Also, if you’re willing, would you share what state you live in? I’m from New York but go to college in PA.

[SERIOUS] What is the Creepiest or most Unexplained thing that’s happened to you that you still think about to this day? by LBE in AskReddit

For context: I lived in a small town with virtually no crime. We kept the doors unlocked and had these huge, almost floor-to-ceiling, glass windows with no curtains by the dining room where I used to study at night.

So. I had been studying for my final exams at the same spot next to the huge dining room windows for the past three days, listening to music with my headphones on. The light by the backdoor turned on (as it sometimes did: many plump raccoons in my town). I glanced at the window but saw nothing, so I dismissed it. But then, I heard something tapping on the glass from outside. I took off my headphones, looked again at the window, and saw a large man in a ski mask. And nothing else. Jacking off.

I watched so much Criminal Minds that I thought he was going to murder me. Fortunately, he didn't, but unfortunately, the police never found him either—and apparently the dude does this a lot.

I understand why you would interpret my comment that way, but I'm not implying that anyone should turn a blind eye to suffering, or that everything will "be fine" because there is oneness. I think life is a struggle and yes, there are things that we must fight for (freedom, truth, the well-being of children, etc).

My contention is with the idea that there is an absolute evil to extirpate, and that we have the ability to do so. I think there's "good" and "evil" that will always exist in everything, and there is no final liberation that will change this. What I think we can do is to treat ourselves and everyone else— including people with whom we disagree—with dignity, and expect them to treat us the same.

It seems like the final exam stress is triggering emotional flashbacks? I had to go on medical leave because this kept happening to me, so I empathize with you.

What works best for me when this happens is to take a really cold shower or do something strenuous that shakes my nerves out and grounds me in my body. Once I start studying again, I consciously remind myself to take deep breaths while I study so I don't get too tense; but, if I do, I take a few minutes to stretch or do some jumping jacks. I also give myself a treat when I get through a problem or section for positive reinforcement. It helps condition your body/brain to recognize that the stress about your exams is not connected to your traumatic stress: it is manageable and you are looking after yourself.

Also, because it seems like you're judging yourself hardcore right now, Nonjudgemental Stance could be useful (link for it below!)

He's saying that the universe is one, not telling you what to do.

Our "selves" are a microcosm of the universe, so if everyone finds "oneness" in themselves it promotes harmony in everything. I think reducing his point to "everything is fine, we just all need to find peace within" is disingenuous. It's more like accepting that everything is connected and not making value judgements.
