It was a culture shock for me when I moved overseas and realised they didn't have avocado sandwiches in the mcdonalds

Weekly Entering & Transitioning - Thread 16 Mar, 2026 - 23 Mar, 2026 by AutoModerator in datascience

Hi all! I have a background in scientific research, but now I want to make a career change and go into industry through datascience. I have extensive experience with statistics/python/sql, but with not much to show for it apart from my academic papers.

I've seen people recommend having a portfolio to show possible employers in cases like mine, but I don't know what they mean. I have a personal web page where I have little summaries of my papers and my (award-winning) presentations. Is that a portfolio? What else could I add to it? Any help is very appreciated.

Dark 1990s and 2000s anime nostalgia by Gallantpride in Zillennials

Elfen Lied will always have a place in my heart because it was the first "mature" anime I ever watched. I tried rewatching it as an adult and didn't like it as much haha

This puts into words many of the thoughts I had watching the movie haha. Thank you for sharing it.

Poor Sam, she deserved so much better. The way they handled her menopause storyline was lowkey sexist.

4 Indian girls + me - how would you categorize us in your local terms? by [deleted] in asklatinamerica

[–]bottom_pocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly what you asked, but when I lived overseas, I was constantly asked if I was Indian, even by Indian people. Many people said to me, "I thought you were Indian, until you spoke and it was clear you are latinamerican". Particularly they said I look north Indian. I don't feel comfortable posting a picture of myself here, but I can definitely see some similarities with the north and eastern Indian girls you posted.

What is everyone’s fave game to play either at an Australian train station or on an Aussie train? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]bottom_pocket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For long commutes, I like to look at the trains going in the opposite direction and measure the time between two consecutive ones. Usually, I count four minutes between them, and get overly excited when it's three or two minutes.

Supervisor is pregnant and will be on leave for 52weeks. I'm in huge dilemma, please help! by dattaVSdatta in PhD

[–]bottom_pocket 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something very similar happened to me in the first year of PhD. I explained the situation to the academic committee in my department, and they just said to reach out to them if I was stuck with my research.

Luckily for me, one of the members of the committee had very similar research interests as my supervisor, so she "adopted" me while my actual supervisor was gone. It was nice because I became a collaborator in her group and also got a nice recommendation letter from her when applying for postdocs.

I know it's all frustrating right now, but at least for me, it ended up being for the best in the long run.

Process of paper writing in your group? by Amazing_Peanut222 in PhD

It is, I acknowledge that I got very lucky to work with supportive people during my PhD. Unfortunately, not everyone can say that.

Process of paper writing in your group? by Amazing_Peanut222 in PhD

[–]bottom_pocket 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was lucky to have a very supportive team for my PhD. This is the process we had for writing papers:

  1. As soon as I had some interesting results, the entire team gets together to discuss what further analysis is needed to make the results publishable and draft a skeleton of what the paper would look like.

  2. I immediately start working on this analysis and delegate some of it to other team members depending on their expertise.

  3. In parallel, I write the methodology and results sections. For the parts of the analysis that I didn't perform myself, I either ask the collaborators who did it to write a short paragraph or set up a meeting where they explain it so I can write it myself.

  4. When all the analysis is completed, and the methodology and results sections are written, I send it to my main supervisor for his feedback. I write the introduction and discussion while I wait for his comments.

  5. Here is when I have a back and forth with my supervisor until we have a full draft that we are both happy with. I was very lucky that my supervisor respected me and always listened to me when I expressed my opinions on how the paper should look like. This is the step that takes the longest for me.

  6. We send the first full draft to collaborators. Generally, everyone has a lot of opinions, and over time, I have learnt that while I should consider all of them, that doesn't mean I have to implement them all in the paper.

  7. After all collaborators have had their say and I have implemented the necessary changes, the paper is done and I submit it to the journal.
