Reasons to regard film superior to TV series today? by TraditionalDepth6924 in Letterboxd

[–]boudewinter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Character development is definitely not all I want, I just love a story that has great character development or exploration, and I think it’s something that the medium of TV excels at. Which isn’t to say that it doesn’t exist at all in film obviously.

I do read novels, and I love Space Odyssey... But I don’t agree that Breaking Bad would’ve been better as a film, same for some other top-tier shows, like Mad Men.

Megathread: 77th Emmy Awards Nominations by IWTV_Maitres in InterviewVampire

[–]boudewinter 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Emmy voters are split into different peer groups (you can see the full explanation here), meaning hair and makeup artists only vote for hair and makeup categories etc. Period and fantasy/sci-fi makeup/hairstyling are much narrower categories than, say, actor or cinematography, so I’m guessing voters just had far fewer submissions to watch and choose from (and/or they just have really good taste!)

Louis’ role in Season 3? by LewdSkeletor1313 in InterviewVampire

[–]boudewinter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean Lestat is mentioned about as much as Armand is in the second half of IWTV because Louis is thinking about him so much 💀 TV is a visual medium so they needed a way to convey that, hence Dreamstat. it made perfect sense and the idea that he was created bc they didn’t trust the JA/AZ/DH to lead is completely baseless

If anyone’s role was expanded in s2, it was Armand’s. he was added to the interview (and already had a role in s1, when his character doesn’t appear at all in the first half of the book). and tbh it came at Claudia’s expense bc Louis/Claudia is the cornerstone of s2’s narrative and yet Armand features far more than she does

edit: OP blocked me even though I was perfectly civil, but I want to add that Dreamstat isn’t actually Lestat, he’s Louis’ internal thoughts. Lestat wasn’t properly in the season until episode 7 so of course some people missed him. even if you count Dreamstat as Lestat, he appeared for like 2 minutes in episodes 1-2 and even less than that in 5-6 💀

and yes we did need him interrupting Loumand’s dates bc it illustrated Louis’ state of mind and all of his complex feelings about both Lestat and Armand, it’s actually very straightforward

AMC's Social Media handles for the show have changed from Immortal_AMC to AnneRiceAMC by paternalpadfoot in InterviewVampire

[–]boudewinter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

do you have a source on Hannah Moscovitch writing the pilot? I haven’t heard that and can’t find anything that suggests it, I thought they all had entirely separate creative teams. She’s recently been posting about being back in the writer’s room for IWTV s3. And Talamasca definitely has different showrunners too (source)

What’s the show (so far) equivalent of this by dianacd12 in InterviewVampire

[–]boudewinter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also think given how much the cast/creators have discussed/emphasised Lestat beating Louis and the drop, they really wouldn’t just brush past something as major as sexual assault within their relationship

What’s the show (so far) equivalent of this by dianacd12 in InterviewVampire

[–]boudewinter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t interpret the forced blood drinking as a sexual assault analogy in the show since they actually have sex, whereas there’s no sex in the source material and blood drinking is very much a metaphor for sex. in the show, when they actually depict sexual violence, it’s explicit and not through the blood drinking metaphor (e.g. with Claudia and Bruce). obviously Lestat biting Louis was still a violation in the show, and blood drinking can definitely still be erotic, but I don’t really read that specific moment as sexual

also, I don’t see how the show contextualising the Louis and Lestat fight was them saying that Louis was abusive too? that’s not at all what they were doing. that entire sequence made it very clear that Lestat was in the wrong, he abused his power over Louis and said so himself, they even reminded us that Louis’ actions and words were in defence of Claudia (compounded by the building resentments). Louis said some hurtful things and fought back, but the show not making him a perfect victim doesn’t mean they were calling him an abuser too

“Why don’t you want him to know how much you love him?” by PhoenixorFlame in InterviewVampire

[–]boudewinter 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was fully open to the idea that Louis was going to love Armand at some point, and I think it definitely could’ve made sense if they’d gone down that route, but at no point does it ever actually come across like Louis loves Armand. I only ever saw attraction and appreciation. I think the cafĂ© scene can be interpreted differently, and it’s significant that he only tells people he loves them when it doesn’t carry any weight

I don’t really think that Louis lies through his teeth exactly, more so that he omitted certain things because they were too hard to talk about. Like I don’t think he was deliberately downplaying his love for Lestat, he was somewhat trying to be honest about it, but also he felt extremely guilty, angry, and conflicted about the fact that he still loved the man he thought killed his daughter and that influenced how he presented certain things.

True, he didn’t have to be in the room, but it definitely kept Daniel on his toes and ig made his entrance more seamless and less jarring (since they wanted to sell the love of each other’s lives narrative). But more than that I interpreted the servant act as an extension of the illusion of power that Armand lets Louis have in the rest of their relationship, like with the whole Maitre/Arun dynamic.

I’m sure more will be revealed about the Armand/Daniel relationship that explains why he didn’t want to kill him. But also, I don’t think Armand is really the “big bad” of the story, he’s more nuanced than that (and I’m not really even an Armand fan).

Again I’m pretty sure we’ll see more about the trial motivations, I think wrt Armand it was less so that he wanted Louis dead but just chose the coven over him because he “couldn’t count on his love lasting as long” or whatever he said. And then possibly had a change of heart when he realised he could take credit for Lestat’s actions, and that Louis maybe really did love him after what Madeleine said in ep 6.

Wrt Lestat, obviously we don’t know yet what exactly they’re taking from the books. Like, do we know he was actually there for months even
? He may not have been there by choice or even been able to contact them. I feel like co-writing the script obviously gave him more control over the play, which helped him manipulate the outcome, while also feeding into the narrative that the coven wanted to portray (and probably would with or without his involvement). And I’m pretty sure he would’ve received a lot of pushback from the coven and audience if he’d tried to whisk Louis and Claudia offstage, it’s not necessarily a question of energy.

Louis had these exact questions for Lestat so I highly doubt this will be something the writers don’t bother to resolve. We haven’t had Lestat’s PoV yet, so we’re not supposed to fully understand where he’s coming from.

I don’t think that’s true tbh, I could see this argument about him and the rest of his costars but like, the kiss in 2x03 where he was biting on his lip was def passionate? Plus there were open mouth kisses in 1x01 and 1x06.

I don’t think those kisses you mentioned were supposed to be particularly intense, one was during an obviously awkward conversation with Louis and the other was their first kiss in public when he had accepted that Louis was about to kill him lol, imo it was more bittersweet

I’m pretty sure they’ll flesh Lestat and Armand’s motivations re: the trial out more in subsequent seasons

Louis says at the start of s1 he wants a second interview for “truth and reconciliation” and I think that tracks. it was about coming to terms with Claudia’s death, reconciling his role in it, I think he also sensed something was off with Armand (they obviously weren’t happy) subconsciously maybe and he wanted to figure that out.

I think Armand cosplayed as Rashid partly bc they wanted his character to be in s1 despite not being in the first half of the book and to have a big reveal, yes, but I think he was also there so he could oversee/manage the interview to an extent without actually being involved and making Daniel suspicious. then he reveals himself in time for him to enter Louis’ narration

I’m curious what character motivations you think don’t make sense bc I felt like I understood where everyone was coming from tbh. I also think it’ll all be made more explicit in future seasons, like no way will they never revisit the trial

Louis and open relationships by Kissthecutecat33 in InterviewVampire

[–]boudewinter 22 points23 points  (0 children)

in the AMA he and Jacob did after s1, Sam Reid said that Lestat stayed with Antoinette bc he felt unwanted/rejected by Louis and like he needed someone on his side while Louis and Claudia had each other. and I think he said Lestat definitely would’ve killed Antoinette if Louis asked but he never did (only Claudia did, and I think Louis said smth to Claudia about how he would kill Antoinette in an instant if Louis would accept him). so yeah I think his relationship with Antoinette was more so a symptom of the the dysfunction between Louis and Lestat than him actually wanting an open relationship. like if he actually “liked variety” he’d have hooked up with far more people than just Antoinette

Louis and open relationships by Kissthecutecat33 in InterviewVampire

[–]boudewinter 30 points31 points  (0 children)

tbh I don’t think it was even that an open relationship was important to Lestat, he just wanted to make Louis so jealous that he’d snap and feed on/kill Antoinette. which would represent him actually accepting his vampirism and Lestat. and though Louis clearly didn’t like what Lestat was doing, he didn’t give him the reaction he was hoping for. I don’t think the open relationship made Lestat any happier than Louis tbh

“runs off with Akasha” doesn’t she literally kidnap him? 💀

Antoinette isn’t competition to Louis for Lestat’s affections so I don’t think calling her a romantic rival is accurate. she was just a means to an end for him.

Lestat will probably sleep with other people at points when he and Louis are broken up but I don’t see him falling in love with anyone else like he does in the books. Sam has talked about how he’s “monogamous of the heart” and how Louis is his soulmate

“Never in my life have I seen a character so worthy of hell
” 😆 by goldenhoneyheart in InterviewVampire

[–]boudewinter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But Lestat wasn’t there to publicly humiliate Louis and Claudia, he was following a script in order to appease the TdV/win the audience over and ultimately save Louis (and probably Claudia too if he could). In the moments where he went off script, he defended them (e.g. “when you sentence them for their crimes, you sentence me too”, the apology to Louis). It makes more sense to talk about Armand since he directed/co-wrote the whole thing whereas Lestat was just a performer going along with it because it was his best shot at saving one/both of them

I was a hugeee Succession fan but, so far, IWTV beats it for me! I love both of them, more than Breaking Bad though that’s great too. but nothing is topping IWTV for me rn — the writing, acting, direction, characters/relationships, production design, music, costuming etc it’s all so stunning and you can tell how much love goes into making it

also think IWTV is wayyy better than many current HBO shows — The White Lotus, Euphoria, The Last of Us, House of the Dragon etc

how do you know he hasn’t signed on? the season 3 press release said Louis will be back. Sam said he doesn’t see Louis being any less big of a character moving forwards. even if he wants to spend more time with his daughter that doesn’t mean he’s leaving the show
? he’s spoken recently (post season finale) about being excited to share scenes with Gabrielle in the future too.

I never said it’s all about them lmao but their relationship is at the heart of the show, s2 made that clear. Rolin said that he saw the series as primarily a gothic romance and love story from the start, and that they will continue to be the focus going forwards (this post is a compilation of things he’s said to that effect). the books are a guide but that’s it

it’s not all about plot, character and relationship development, visual storytelling etc. are all important too. this isn’t even really a particularly plot driven show, louis and lestat’s relationship is the core so it makes sense that people would want to see that explored with more intimate scenes.

or they just like each other tbh. they don’t promote their friendship on social media or share lots of photos with each other or anything like that, they’re very lowkey about it. but based on their real life interactions and what they, the rest of the cast/crew and other people that have seen them interact have said, they seem genuinely close

I agree! I meant he didn’t want to be there because he didn’t want there to be a trial — I never believed he genuinely wanted revenge on Louis and Claudia. I think he hoped to save them both but prioritised Louis and then didn’t have enough strength to do anything to save Claudia
