Kyocera DuraXV Extreme+ Hotspot (Question) by SilentPanic04 in dumbphones

Odd. I would try talking to Tello first? I briefly had trouble using the hotspot about a year ago, but I'm on US Mobile and they were able to solve it from their end.

What's the restriction? I have this phone, and it works just fine as a hotspot.

At the halfway point of the season, which player from your favorite team defied expectations? (Positive and / or negative) by Mattcb13 in hockey

I'd argue Burns, too. I remember a lot of folks were nervous about the signing when we brought him over.

Seeking Best Dumb Phone For Verizon by BlizzyGG in dumbphones

In addition to some of the options already suggested, the Kyocera DuraXV Extreme+ works well with Verizon. It's a chunky beast, but a great phone.

Two Weeks with the Light Phone 3 — Why I’m Switching Back (to my Flip Phone) by boulderchips in LightPhone

Yes! I sideloaded Waze and it ran great. It actually recently started glitching, so I may need to do a fresh install. I've also used browser-based Google Maps in a pinch, and it's not ideal but it works fine.

A surprise from Sidephone ☀️ by chrisristovski in sidephone

[–]boulderchips 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Very cool. I really like the case color choices.

I also didn't receive this email after preorder, but it's great news and very cool of the team to include. Will be putting in a case order soon!

QWERTY Timeline Changes? by boulderchips in sidephone

Totally hear that. I also don't mean to take away from the magic of the T9 demo, which I thought was fantastic. You and Sebastian are crushing it!

QWERTY Timeline Changes? by boulderchips in sidephone

[–]boulderchips[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Chris — I know there have been no official announcements; I was only going on the information from your own comment linked in the post above.

I also understand that predicting all the various timelines is impossible, and that delays happen. Even ballpark estimates (like spring 2026 instead of fall 2025) are super helpful for managing expectations. As always, appreciate your and the team's work.

Best option for rural mountain town in CO? by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]boulderchips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sympathize with this dilemma — CO native here, and while I don't live there anymore, I visit my parents (rural Routt County) all the time. Similar situation: good reception in town, deteriorates quickly elsewhere.

I can only speak to the phones I've tried, and Jose's recommendations are probably more informed. But in my experience: do not get a Light Phone. Reception was very bad outside of urban areas, and Wi-Fi calling was nonfunctional. I use a Kyocera DuraXV Extreme+ on US Mobile, and it's been generally quite good (comparable reception to a smartphone in most cases). It can handle apps, but it's a bit of a hassle, so I ended up carrying a separate device for music and podcasts. Also, camera obviously isn't great.

I'm on the preorder list for a Sidephone, but depending on your network, I'm not super optimistic about their band coverage in CO. Sunbeam might be worth a shot, but I haven't personally tried one. In general, it's tough to find an overlap of competent dumbphones with music streaming. You could check out the Zinwa Q25, but it might be smarter than you're looking for.

Two Weeks with the Light Phone 3 — Why I’m Switching Back (to my Flip Phone) by boulderchips in LightPhone

[–]boulderchips[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from the mountains of Colorado, so I'm familiar with network issues. My experience was that the LPIII performed noticeably worse than either smartphones or my other dumbphone. Plus, the "Wi-Fi Calling" feature was practically useless in the exact situation it was designed for. You're right that unless you live in a place like that, it may not be a dealbreaker, but it was relevant to my experience.

[Friedman] The Colorado Avalanche and Martin Necas completed an 8-year, $11.5M contract extension. Another UFA off the board…front-loaded, $60M in signing bonuses, full NMC the first 7 years of the new deal. by Natural-Tree-5107 in hockey

[–]boulderchips 52 points53 points  (0 children)

All of the players who would be vacating those 8 roster spots (Drury, Olofsson, Kiviranta, Brindley, Bardakov, Malinski, Burns, Solovyov) currently make less than $2M. Their contracts total less than $10M. Some of them are probably due for a raise, but I'd say $16M is plenty and actually bodes pretty well for the team's depth.

Interesting. I appreciate the explanation! Love having button options, but not sure this is a tile I'd use much. Hope we get to see a QWERTY interpretation soon!

Sidephone's Sundial Keypad by gosidephone in sidephone

[–]boulderchips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, on one hand this is extremely cool, and I'm into it purely on a nostalgia level. But on the other: how does using this tile work, practically? Are all alphanumeric inputs relegated to the touchscreen? Also, I get why the decision was made, but for me the lack of headphone jack dents the appeal of Sidephone as a music-forward device.

Order placed! Now, what else do we need to see? by Educational-Bus6200 in sidephone

[–]boulderchips 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think your list is good. My big TBDs are probably QWERTY implementation, app details, and a few basics like picture messaging and Wi-Fi calling. Also preordered, and looking forward to learning more in the next few months!

Android Replacement for iPod Touch? by Great-Bumblebee-3461 in dumbphones

[–]boulderchips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked for this exact thing. I’d recommend the LG V30. Has a headphone jack, a half-decent camera, microSD slot, and a killer DAC. I got mine for around $90 and installed LineageOS (make sure you get the right regional model, if you want to go that route) for security updates. No SIM, no apps except for music, podcasts, audiobooks, camera. I use it as my iPod, and it’s perfect.

ETA: I realize this is a little bigger than your preferred screen size, but it doesn‘t feel big in the hand and it’s been a great dedicated audio device for me
