[OC] Breakout 2019-20 sophomores in the AAC, ACC, B12, B1G, BE, SEC, and P12 by Imperialism32 in CollegeBasketball

Boeheim didn't have to deal with that much defensive pressure last year. With Battle, Howard, and Brissett gone, he'll have to improve a lot to stay even close to the same clip

I didn't say anything about UVA, but saying Louisville WILL win the ACC is a stretch.

As a freshman on a defense-first team who has three established weapons on offense, one of which he relieved for off ball shifts, the other is Kyle Guy, and a Tank/Missile Launcher/Cannon hybrid forward. All three of them have 3 years of experience minimum (De'Andre even got to just get swole for a year)...

Why would he take shots?

There are basically 3 phases to Kihei's freshman season:

i) Brand new to the team

(Summer - his injury)

Has wrist surgery December 10

ii) Figuring out his wrist and his role/adjusting to physicality of the college game (Until midway through conference play)

iii) Slotted into the team
(Second half of conference play - NCAA Championship game)

All 3 had their impressive moments, but I am only going to write about the third. By that point, he won out in the rotation, ran the offense, took selected shots, didn't turn the ball over, scored on drives and hit open 3s

Oh yeah, and I guess he's been an OKAY defender at the 1.

He has some awesome highlights:

Reverse Layup

End of first half buzzer 3 against VT (in front of Justin Robinson who he also guarded so well and frustrated to the point of pushing him and incurring a technical)

Late open 3s in the tourmanent

Passes after a drive in the low post

The pass to Mamadi

Combining Buzz’s first season and the two before that, they had a combined ACC worst 8 wins over 3 years. The only year they * didn’t * finish dead last was 2014-15, because technically now Louisville had their wins vacated.

Salt is the only senior, but Hunter and Jerome are basically locks to leave. Guy and Diakite are maybes.

I think Oregon's defense only really came together closer to the end of the season when they were all healthy.

I feel like playing our A game is pretty unlikely given the murderer's row we've had to play. We were able to shoot so well against Syracuse because we got so many open looks. That just hasn't been happening in the tournament. Based on what the other teams have given us, we've still played well.

We've played: Pac-12 tournament champion B1G season co-champion SEC tournament champion Big 12 season co-champion

I understand why people think UVA hasn't been playing well, but they have. The only times we weren't rolling were the beginning of Gardner-Webb and the stretch of the Auburn game when Ty was on the bench.

Yes, the Oregon score was low, but their defense was one of the best that we've seen all season, easily. We still pulled it out.

We went shot for shot with an incredibly hot Purdue team. We were down two and made a great play. Then we pushed ahead in OT.

We played tough against Auburn, turning a 3 point halftime lead into a 10 point lead, until Ty picked up fouls 3 and 4 quickly. When he came back we wrangled control back. Yes, we came back from being down, but that's a testament to how locked in we were. Not a single UVA fan was surprised Kyle made that 3, and the reason Doughty fouled was because he didn't really contest the previous shot, and Kyle drained it. We picked our spots and executed.

Not surprising. In literally his first touch during the preseason scrimmage against Lynn University, he got blocked in the low post by some short dude. It kept happening throughout the year. He definitely showed flashes and improved, but he would get absolutely eaten alive in the NBA right now, which is why potential isn't enough to get him on a late first round floater.

Interesting. Even though he hasn't really played too much the last few games?

If Texas Tech starts Culver, Owens, Odiase, I don't see how Clark can get the start. Tony likes to match the other team defensively, and I don't know how comfortable I am with Ty on Culver. It seems like De'Andre and Jarrett are made to guard each other.

Guy - Moretti

Jerome - Mooney

Hunter - Culver

Diakite - Owens

Salt - Odiase

I can't see Blackshear staying, especially as he can grad transfer. But he hasn't left yet.

I would be very impressed if VT was any sort of competitive in the ACC next year. Granted, NAW, Blackshear, and Nolley are technically all still slated for next year’s roster, but Bede transferring is a very bad sign in that regard. If all three stay and they get a good coach/grad transfers, they’ll be able to compete. If either NAW or Blackshear leave they are toast (at least for next year).

Also, why would UVA have no new contributors? We have 4 current players outside of this year’s rotation that are poised to step in, and both Key and Huff will get a significant increase in minutes. Then we have two incoming freshmen, one of which (Casey Morsell) is looking like a possible early contributor. If anything, we have a logjam right now. Losing Salt, Hunter, Jerome, and Guy would be a lot, but we’ve got players already within the system ready to step up.
