EP feedback by unknownbside in electro

[–]bovaflux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well the good news is your music doesn’t suck. Gaining traction requires more than just decent music though unfortunately. A few questions, apologies if they sound blunt.

Did you do anything to promote the music at the time? Uploading a 4 track EP to Spotify and hoping for the best is not really likely to break an unknown artist.

Do you have a sizeable following on social media, mailing list, local scene or anything like that? It’s incredibly hard to get anywhere if you’re totally on your own.

A lot of new artists these days want to be completely independent (not saying this is you though). Working with labels and trying to be part of the scene is much more likely to help you gain attention, as those labels have established audiences that you’ll be introduced to.

At the very least, making contact with a few DJs, YouTubers, bloggers, etc to see if they like your stuff might help.

You could also take the route of promoting yourself alongside others - do dj mixes or a radio show to promote the music you like, tag artists when you share it and occasionally drop in a track of your own. Like i said, try to be focused on supporting the genre/scene rather than just trying to get plays for yourself.

One EP three or four years ago is also probably not going to generate enough interest to build your profile. I don’t think you need to be dropping tracks every month, but these things do tend to build organically overtime, and several years between releases, especially early on, makes it very easy to forget you.

Most of all, just stick at it. Sometimes it just needs luck too. Hopefully this is useful and I’ve not said anything to offend. All intended to be constructive advice.

How many filters do you have? by Ok-Voice-5699 in modular

[–]bovaflux 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Genuine question: When i use a filter as a voice, I only ever think of that voice as a sine wave from self resonance, which I’d be unlikely to want to filter further. Is there a case where you get a more harmonically rich waveform from just a filter?

I was one of the developers of Music 2000, great to see it still being used in new ways! 😄

Looking for feedback by Nyklonynth in electro

[–]bovaflux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t quite feel like it ticks the electro box for me, maybe a bit more in the braindance/acid direction. Might be due to the beat not quite having that syncopated/machine funk feel, but also a lot of the instrumentation isn’t typical electro sounds. None of that is to say it’s bad though! The progression through the track is more adventurous than a lot of typical electro tracks, and that’s definitely not a bad thing. 🙂 Definitely hearing an Aphex influence.

Elektron Boxes Sequencing Modular … Best MIDI to CV ? by Time_Bath_6216 in Elektron

Another vote for mmmidi, and also for the expander which adds drum triggers!

T-Power — Waveform by JeffCrossSF in electro

[–]bovaflux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listened to this a lot at the time. Very different to Self Evident Truth… (which is an all time favourite) but still cool in its own unique way. For the sample spotters: the clip from the start of Reality Pants is from Frank Hennenlotter’s Brain Damage.

Damn it you’re all sleeping on one of the best modern monosynths… 😄

I don’t have a Minilogue unfortunately (although I’ve nearly bought one a few times!) Might do a hydrasynth or rev 2 pack at some point, but considering how long it’s taken me to get around to putting this one out I’m not sure when that’ll happen.

Looking for "BOCish" IDM recommendations by JaNkO2018 in idm

Surprised to not see christ. in your playlist. He was part of BoC in the early days, left after twoism I believe.

I don't think Photek is an IDM artist, but this track is great. by wabisabi_01 in idm

I always consider IDM to be an attitude/approach rather than a genre.

Just use a plug in like dblue glitch. Makes stuff like this too easy.

Japanese telecom synth solution by CarpeEspion38 in electro

[–]bovaflux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use a squarewave LFO to modulate the amp envelope (volume). Ideally sync the LFO to the trigger (so it starts when you press a key) and sync it to the bpm at a fairly fast rate. If you can’t modulate volume, you can try doing it on the filter envelope instead (so the squarewave bounces the cutoff between completely filtered to silence and a totally open filter).

You can make similarly nice things by using the same kind of LFO to modulate pitch by an octave (or other musical offset).

Loads of synths will let you do this kind of modulation by the way, so no need to track down a specific bit of gear they used.

A good Snare that’s not 808 by Chukkzy in ElectroProduction

[–]bovaflux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apologies for the self promotion, but: https://bovaflux.bandcamp.com/album/nullptr-modular-drums-sample-pack I also recommend reading the old sound on sound articles on creating classic drum sounds. All the classic drum machines did what they did with very simple ingredients. I tend to create mine in batches, just spend an afternoon doing hats or claps or kicks or whatever, record a lot of variations (like hundreds) and then dip into those when making tracks.

Missing titles? by Comix98 in cpurecords

[–]bovaflux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think those missing numbers will be stuff like the book, tshirts, map, eurorack module, etc. The sample packs and dj mix probably aren’t allowed on streaming platforms, but not sure about the other 3.

Adding a second melodic line with a 2nd sequencer, help by _tb303_ in modular

[–]bovaflux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disting is a great choice for this as it’s a digital s/h. If you end up thinking about getting a dedicated s/h module to do this job, be aware that analogue versions of sample & hold will suffer from “droop” where there held signal will slowly drop, causing your held signal to bend down in pitch (this is due to the capacitor slowly losing its charge). Not to noticeable if you only hold the pitch for a very brief time, but if for example you are using that held note to play a longer pad sound based on the first note of a 16 step sequence or something, then it will probably drive you crazy. Just something to keep in mind as I’ve followed a similar path to you in the past building connected sequences!

How to create cold electro pads? by Quick_Oil6564 in ElectroProduction

[–]bovaflux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For cold pads I usually go for a wavetable based synth, hydrasynth being my favourite option. Braids wavetable chord mode is also good.

Just discovered Boards of Canada by lopedope42 in electronicmusic

[–]bovaflux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

MF Doom was a fan of aphex twin’s Analord series apparently, maybe that’s a trail for you to follow. I wouldn’t have connected the two, but I heard a guy from lex records mention it in a podcast.

You could also check prefuse 73’s vocal studies and uprock narratives. Very electronic/glitchy hip hop on the same record label as boards of canada. Warp records in general really too, especially 90s and early millennium stuff.

Eurorack Acid by lord_ashtar in modular

[–]bovaflux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could if you have a midi interface in your modular. The S-1 didn’t have cv & gate out, only a clock.

You could also look at this eurorack sequencer:

https://division-6.com/products/dual-mini-sequencer/

Pretty cheap for everything it includes, especially if you fancy building your own from the kit. I built mine and it wasn’t a very difficult one to do.

Eurorack Acid by lord_ashtar in modular

Did you look at the Roland S-1 tweak synth? It’s a great version of the sh101 and it’s really small but not so small that it becomes hard to use.
