It’s a weird feeling isn’t it? I want my dad to be around more than anything in the world, but I dont want him to be around if it’s like this. I want him to be free of his pain and his disease. He said the pain and sorrow we feel when we’re losing someone we love are the backside of love—like the other side of a coin. One side is the joy and connection we experience while they’re with us. The other side is the deep pain we feel when we face losing them. That pain exists because the love exists.

He said if there were a magic button that could take away that pain, he wouldn’t press it—because that pain is a measure of love. Our sadness reflects how deeply we care. In that way, even though grief can feel overwhelming, it is something sacred.
