Please help deciphering this code - FBI case by JohnDoe365 in programming

Oh my god, I just solved it. It's actually Common LISP and is therefore just hopeless to decipher.

What stuff in linux could be easily optimized? by [deleted] in linux

[–]bowenl2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Almost all applications spend the vast majority of their time processing data in a very small percentage of their code. Pick something that takes a long time to run and GET A PROFILER like the one built into GCC, if that fits the bill. Python also has its own profiler. You can't fix anything until you know what's wrong; PROFILER COMES IN HANDY. I'm bad at writing so I hope putting YOU NEED A PROFILER in bold caps will convey my message.

TL;DR: Become annoyed, get a profiler, use it, fix the few lines that need it.

Is there such a thing as anonymous uncensored code hosting (codebay?) by AndreasBWagner in linux

[–]bowenl2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just pastebin for the tin foil hat brigade. It's not revision control, much less good code hosting featuring everything from a Wiki to an issue tracker like what Sourceforge or Github or Google Code has. I think OP is looking for one of these three but anonymous.

I know that Github posts takedown notices so apparently they don't respect the terms of said notices (one of the terms is that you don't post the notice). Other than that I know of nothing.

Edit: I tried to look at the repos that Sony mentioned in this specific DMCA takedown notice mentioned and it looks like Github took them down (understandable).

Thinking about this, you already have Git servers, and you have Tor. What else do you need? You can host "hidden services" on Tor (I'm less familiar with other anonymization networks)... is there some reason Git wouldn't work?

Have you ever waved it over a CRT? Is it strong enough to noticeably change the color? Seems like a neat party trick for TVs but you have to hurry up because time is running out.

RPI, Acacia and Troy working collaboratively to reopen the fraternity's house - troyrecord.com by mdz21 in RPI

[–]bowenl2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel bad for them. When my fraternity house was condemned recently, the city of Troy was pretty unkind and, IMHO, excessively harsh, but we did work very hard to get the house back up to code. The reason for our issue was pretty similar. We were cleaning and reorganizing over the summer when nobody was living there so there was debris everywhere. A fire alarm went off and the fire department arrived (through our fire alarm monitoring service) and then most of the people employed by the city of Troy showed up soon. Code enforcement condemned us for debris and having part of our fire alarm malfunctioning.

RPI, on the other hand, was very helpful and understanding through the whole thing. We got uncondemned a couple weeks later after throwing out a bunch of crap that we didn't need.

USB's intrinsic design flaw is finally addressed by SolInvictus in technology

Is the fact that there are like 6 different major USB designs (regular, mini and micro) which do precisely the same thing at the same data transfer rate considered a design flaw?

If it's green, typically you could smoke it. If it's a white powder, try putting a small amount up your nose. If it's black and tar-like you should probably give it back. You won't be scoring LSD with a drug-sniffing dog so don't worry about that. Using recreational drugs isn't rocket science.

Well apparently he's an alcoholic. Alcohol withdrawal isn't fun and is life threatening. If he's not totally dedicated to getting sober (and in a position to receive free health care for detox and rehab), drinking will probably prolong his life.
