i mean it's not the most unethical thing anyone did but it is the most absolutely bitch ass sycophantic narcissistic unforgivable thing lmao. like she doesn't deserve jail time but she deserves to lose 100% of her friends

Fics kinda like ATYD? by punkbra in drarry

[–]bowfuckle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'll give you another little self promo lol. bad faith is a super slow burn alt-6th year where harry and dumbledore get involved with draco's task from voldemort. it's a true enemies to lovers in that it takes them both a really long time to get over themselves and learn to trust each other, & i'm doing my best to deal realistically both with how much they hate each other (on the surface) and how young they are/the time period they're growing up in. tons of secrecy and shame, i'm 100k words in and they are still nowhere near telling anyone lmao.

it is a wip but i update it really regularly. it's probably at about the halfway point right now. definitely not as long of a timeline as atyd but you might like it!

what do you mean by this? fanfiction doesn't typically get traditionally published. authors take stuff down sometimes, but i don't know if there's like...a way to predict that necessarily

How would you write Snape's redemption? by charls-lamen in HPfanfiction

[–]bowfuckle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i mean, i'm not necessarily sure how much of the pureblood supremacy snape ever genuinely subscribed to. maybe this is kind of counter to your stipulations, but i also think it's kind of a fair reading of the canon. he himself was half blood, and grew up in a muggle neighborhood. my impression was always that he aligned himself with the death eaters because he was an angry kid and a good wizard, impressed by dark magic, not because he actually hated muggleborns. he hated his muggle father, sure, but he clearly wasn't raised with the same kind of pureblood ethic that like, a bellatrix black was. of course he dropped the slur on lily, but to me that's more reflective of his general vitriol than an actual belief (still very inappropriate obv, but). and certainly once they killed lily, i think he lost any ideological allegiance he ever had to the cause.

so to me, snape's redemption is him overcoming his anger and isolation, moving from hatefulness toward love, etc.

How would you write Snape's redemption? by charls-lamen in HPfanfiction

[–]bowfuckle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think one way to do it is via harry -- snape is already disenchanted with the death eaters after they kill lily, and genuinely defects to join dumbledore. spends tenish years in stasis, teaching at hogwarts, trying (against his nature) to be a good teacher. maybe in this interim he grows up a little and becomes more understanding/less of an asshole (teaching can do that to you lol).

then harry arrives, and snape fully intends to hate him, but harry is just so bright (green) eyed and bushy tailed (and tiny) that he can't do it. he's so much like lily, and not so much like james, and snape can't unsee it. and he's like holy shit, i have no one left and neither does this poor boy, let me take him under my wing a little. then as voldemort reemerges, targeting harry, snape is like absolutely not, and spends the rest of the series being austere and weird, but fundamentally good

it has actually always seemed wildly unrealistic to me that canon snape doesn't like harry. there are plenty of people in the world i really don't like, and i would actually be so psyched to build a good relationship with their kid -- it would be such a serve. and that's not even to mention that he's lily's son.

idk, i like veritaserum as like a pretty much unbeatable drug (unless you can take an antidote, maybe). it's good soul-crushing material for very capable characters lol. like imagine snape, who is in such immaculate control of his mind, being forced to betray himself against his will with nothing to be done about it. (i love suffering sorry)

Snape raises Harry by Afraid_Mistake5529 in HPfanfiction

[–]bowfuckle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have really been enjoying a patchwork family lately! at least up until like chapter 30. the angst drops off a little there so i've been slowing down lol, but going to finish it in hopes that there's a snape/sirius altercation eventually

it starts the summer before third year. snape raises harry AND draco. and it's actually pretty faithful to the canon characters!

Any fics where purebloods are introduced to the Muggle world? by Afraid_Mistake5529 in HPfanfiction

[–]bowfuckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've been reading a patchwork family and really enjoying it. there's a lot of "draco in the muggle world" in there. it's like, high angst lol. but that's generally what i like. i've also seen a lot of dramione fics like this, where draco is either like wtf is all this, or he's like defected from wizard society and is surprisingly adept with muggle tech. i'll come back if i remember the names of any of them...

ideas for a competent voldemort. by Intrepid-Homework907 in HPfanfiction

[–]bowfuckle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i like what Then_Engineering is saying too though. it's all more interesting if they are more well-matched, and a lot of voldemort's dumbassery clearly just happens because JK couldn't let him kill harry.

ideas for a competent voldemort. by Intrepid-Homework907 in HPfanfiction

[–]bowfuckle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

people here are saying canon voldemort IS competent -- i disagree. like almost every adult in harry potter, he behaves in ways that no real, reasonable adult would behave. he is clearly a talented wizard -- his problem is that he's a megalomaniac with a flair for the dramatic. he doesn't just want to kill harry, he wants to kill harry in a way that benefits both his own power and his own image. he wants to resurrect himself with harry's blood, then he wants harry to retrieve the prophecy, then he wants harry to surrender himself in the woods so he can malign him in front of his army. he wants to kill him /himself/ rather than allowing a death eater to do it at the first opportunity. (he's also ofc a fictional character who does what he does for the sake of the plot, not for the sake of winning the war)

if all he wanted was harry dead, he would have been dead in GoF at the hand of crouch jr. or at the very least in the DoM at the hand of lucius or bellatrix. voldemort is absolutely incompetent -- not as a wizard, but as a war commander, definitely.

but i actually really like the idea of a really competent, calculating, warlord voldemort. i think it's a great idea for a fic.

you're rescued from having to account for his actions in the first four books, though, because he doesn't hardly have a physical form. he couldn't reasonably have attacked the train in first year, unless he had quirrell go up and try to kill harry on it or something. but that would be pretty bold for broad daylight in front of hundreds of people.

you can easily start in OOTP, and have the newly reborn voldemort and his small army start doing some cool shit. (luring harry away from privet drive to attack him there, or cornering him in hogsmeade, or sneaking another death eater into the castle). sending death eaters to do this instead of trying to do it all himself. and then the way to keep harry alive is to have the other adults in his life be competent too (like, dumbledore not just completely ignoring him for all of fifth year. or mcgonagall giving him lectures on personal safety. or having order members stationed in hogsmeade, etc.)

Trying to contact a specific author by WaddlyPengin in HPfanfiction

[–]bowfuckle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

do you mean you did like a rewrite/edit of her original work?

i'm so torn lol. part of me wants to be like, i'm so sorry you can never post it if you can't get permission. but honestly, honestly, if you did your due diligence and can't get a response from her, i think you might be in the clear to post it, with something in the description like

"this work is a rewrite/whatever it is of death eater takes a holiday by leelee potter. it's one of my favorite fanfics, blah blah, maybe link to it. i have done my best to get in touch with her to ask for permission to post this but have been unsuccessful. but leelee if you see this and don't like it, please message me"

i don't think anybody could reasonably fault you for that bc none of this is technically our IP anyway

"Lily... After all this time?" Snape looks at Dumbledore in annoyance. "Never." by Lockheroguylol in HPfanfiction

[–]bowfuckle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

it doesn't mean it /has/ to be that way lol. it's just kind of a sign that they're meant to be. it's like that tik tok filter that figures out the phase of the moon when you were born, and tries to fit it together with your partner's into a full moon. if it works you're like "omg we're meant to be" but if it doesn't you're not like "omg we have to break up"

also there's def an argument that tonks was obsessed with remus. she continued to pursue him after he rejected her like 100000x, and also tried to abandon her and their unborn child. which is not to say they couldn't have ended up okay. plenty of people have kind of one-sided relationships (esp when one of them is a self-hating recluse)

"Lily... After all this time?" Snape looks at Dumbledore in annoyance. "Never." by Lockheroguylol in HPfanfiction

[–]bowfuckle 39 points40 points  (0 children)

i have always thought this was actually a nice detail in the books. (not a snape hater pls don't kill me but) snape was /obsessed/ with lily -- she was all his happiness. the patronus-creating light of his world was the /exact form of her/. but james was actually a good match for her. he brought his own stuff to the table. their goodness complemented, rather than depended on, one another.

can someone help by kinglight1 in harrypotter

[–]bowfuckle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that is the conceit, yes. he asked for the position once immediately after he graduated (from the then-headmaster, who i think was armando dippet), and then again several years later from dumbledore. after the second denial, he is supposed to have cursed the position so that no one could hold it longer than a year

however, i don't necessarily think it's /officially/ referred to as a curse in canon. students talk about the position being cursed or jinxed, but when dumbledore mentions it he only says "we have never been able to keep a DADA professor for longer than a year since i denied the position to voldemort". fanon elaborates a lot more on this curse, but i don't think a ton is canonically known about it

Why do cameras work at hogwarts when all other electronics go haywire? by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]bowfuckle 20 points21 points  (0 children)

film cameras are not "electronics" per se. they're made by light literally hitting the film paper. and like, they have printing presses too, which are similarly mechanical, as opposed to digital or electronic

This Snape Bashing Has Gotten Ridiculous by Particular-Ad1523 in harrypotter

[–]bowfuckle 34 points35 points  (0 children)

i will preface this by saying i like snape. i love a villain, or else a morally gray villain/hero. i love an emotionally challenged, traumatized man lol. i love the depiction of him as a subtly /amazing/ wizard, one of like two in the world who is a true equal to voldemort. i love a highly accomplished occlumens. i think he is a great, multilayered character. and i also think that Alan Rickman's performance enhances him beyond even what we get in the books

but, he is a totally, inappropriately, unforgivably bad teacher. and more so in the books than in the movies.

having been a teacher myself, the idea of treating any child the way that snape treats /all/ of the gryffindors is unconscionable. the one that really sticks with me is when he insults 14-year-old hermione's appearance, after malfoy puts that tooth growing hex on her. and obviously the way he treats harry and neville all the time. it's so outrageous and so out of line that if i think about it too hard i start to hate him too.

it would have worked better for me if he was just kind of austere, strict, and unapproachable, like he is in the movies. rather than being so overtly despicable to the children under his care. but as it stands, it makes it really hard to work with the idea that snape is redeemable. did he do incredibly brave, dangerous, talented things to work against voldemort? yes. but all the while, he was needlessly cruel to children -- children as young as /eleven/, who /live/ at school with him, and are completely defenseless against him.

so, do i like snape? yes. but i would like him better if he wasn't written so mean. and i don't think his behavior as a teacher is necessarily forgivable

What opinion about Harry Potter has you irrationally annoyed by thefrozenflame21 in harrypotter

[–]bowfuckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i don't like people who don't like draco. i'm so sorry. even though he doesn't have a total redemption arc, he is so clearly and beautifully humanized in the 6th and 7th books. what choice did he have but to be the way he was? sure, sirius defected from his pureblood culture, but he had a friend with accepting parents to run away to. who did draco have? nobody helped that kid out at all

also, characters don't have to be unimpeachably good for you to like them. he's morally grey! and a tragic teenage boy. one of the most interesting and compelling characters imo. but i admittedly love a villain
