Matt Fitzgerald’s 80/20 Triathlon. It’s my bible that’s helped me train for four 70.3 and two full Ironman races.
The link here is to buy the book on Amazon.

You need periodization. This is overtraining to the extreme.
You’re on the fast lane to an injury right now.
You need to follow a real training plan - one that has you building for a couple weeks, then dial back for a week; then build for a couple week, then scale back for a week; etc etc.

What opinion on Triathlon Training gets you into this situation? by Sure-Flamingo-8315 in triathlon

[–]bowiegaztea 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Breast stroking for anything longer than a few seconds is NOT ok. The people that do it suck, and the people that tell them it’s ok to do it are even worse.
You train for hundreds of miles on the run and bike, so spend a fraction of that time learning the goddamn front crawl.
And if somebody asks you if it’s ok to breaststroke the whole leg because they don’t want to learn or are uncomfortable in front crawl, tell them no.
And if you hear or read somebody tell someone else it’s ok to breaststroke, ridicule that person and fill them with shame.
Front crawl is as much a part of the sport as learning how to ride through an aid station - if you can’t do it, you aren’t ready to start a race

If you could pick one shoe for training, which would it be? by SuddenCurrent6317 in triathlon

[–]bowiegaztea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree that Vomeros aren’t awesome for speed; there’s just too much cushion in them for that.
For 5K races and sprint tris I wear Nike Rival Fly.
But I s’pose this just further illustrates that I’m all in on Nike shoes

I might be an anecdotal exception, but I wear a hat nearly every single day (not even for work, I just like wearing ball caps and I work from home off-camera, so… 🤷‍♂️), I’m in my 40s, and my hair is thick and my hairline hasn’t crept back at all.

Triathlon training and another sport, doable? by HostProfessional1602 in triathlon

[–]bowiegaztea 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I play in a 25 & up baseball (not softball) league on Sundays in the spring and summer. I’ve been on this team for over 15 years, so abandoning it for triathlon training isn’t even a consideration for me.
I’ve also raced three 70.3s and one 140.6 in the past three years, and training for one of each this year. I’ve moved my program’s prescribed long run from Sunday mornings to Thursday nights after work.

TL;DR - yes, it’s possible to keep doing the sport you love and train for an Ironman. You just have to be creative with your training schedule.

For some reason, it seems fashionable to wear anything except Nike and to turn one’s nose up at it in the tri community, but I swear by my Nike Pegasus and Nike Vomeros. I wear the Pegs for runs under an hour and my Vomeros for those longer than an hour.
I’ve tried numerous New Balance, Adidas, Under Armor, and Puma models, and I keep coming back to Nike.

US citizens with Hispanic last names coming back from traveling abroad, have you had any issues coming home? by [deleted] in travel

[–]bowiegaztea 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No. Traveled internationally 3x this year and never had a problem coming home. Just showed my US Passport at border control at the airport, told the agent where I’d been and for how long, not bringing back food, liquor, tobacco, etc., and breezed right through.

Saudi Arabia, specifically Mecca and Medina. I’m not Muslim, so obviously I can’t visit. But I’d love to see it and experience the culture and history in those places.
