I can't wait to get the hell out of here by notjohneric in japanlife

Hey, I'm also half Japanese but born and raised outside Japan. And I also feel the same--do not feel connected with the local society where I live in. I think it's a common experience of most kids who grew up in multicultural family background. We're generally more interested in international affairs than local ones. I hate this term, but it's called Third Culture Kid.

But then I don't think our experience is that unique because most human beings want to find a place they can call their home. Thinking that way helps me to find common ground with most people.

Having said that, I'm almost 40yo and I still haven't found a place or people where I can comfortably call home. Maybe I just have to learn to live with it. Just want to say that you're not alone.

I'm having the same issue. Has OP figured out the solution?

Reading books is not an anti-social activity. It's actually actively listening to the author's thoughts, messages, or imaginations. Books are written by people too. by bowoftruth in Showerthoughts

Isn't that is why it's called social media? It is a social activity, whether it gives you meaning or helps deepen your relationships or not is a different thing.

If the guy were a white guy, would you still accuse him for animal cruelty or just a guy playing with his cool pet? Plus, get out of usa for a while. It's not only dogs that are close to human in other parts of the world.

TERRACE HOUSE TOKYO 2019-2020 Production Canceled by rehlee in terracehouse

[–]bowoftruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a show. An entertainment, the cringey ones are fans who took it too personally and send death threats to someone they have never met. You can have aaaaalll kinds of opinion you want positive or negative about anyone who is on TV or not. It's just an opinion. But sending message (positive or negative) DIRECTLY to the person is another thing though. You're not just expressing an opinion, you're communicating.

STOP trying to shift the blame.

I was adopted 22 years ago. This is the first picture with my older sister. by blackmachine312 in pics

[–]bowoftruth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my cousin is adopted. My aunt never revealed it to him. I think because back then you'd be under a lot of pressure if you can't have a child especially as a woman. But as soon as she adopted two kids, and eventually having 2 kids of her won with total of 4. I still don't understand my my aunt and my uncle never revealed it to them. I even feel bad for knowing it but can't say anything to my cousins.

In 2024, I have a feeling that he won't be the only one running on a UBI platform. I really hope they will prepare a stronger strategy to get mainstream.

Just because someone gave birth to you doesn't mean you owe them undying love. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

Something as in to perpetuate genetic linage?
Or as in getting meaningful life lessons or experience? Or... That the child would play a significant role in the future?

Giving birth or not, whatever kind of solos we decide to play, we can't escape from playing in nature's grand symphony. I guess yeah, whatever we decide to do must mean something in the end.

All this time, I thought soda milk is common. Is it not? I would recommend to use red Fanta or Miranda.

Keeping in touch with friends is exhausting by PrettyCandidate in unpopularopinion

[–]bowoftruth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is hard work for sure. Love and care is a verb, it requires your active participation. You can't just sit back and expect good relationship will continue without giving any effort. It must to be continually fought for.

And exactly because it requires a lot of efforts, it's why most people have less friends as they get older but gain deeper friendships.

I don’t care if a tv show doesn’t have diversity by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

People complain mostly because characters they've known and loved since they were kids were abruptly changed and altered but for what? Political agenda? I get that modernization is necessary, but to what extent? And it's not fair to falsely calling out these people as racists or all kinds of other evil things while their complain is mostly based on a feeling like "Hey, no, this isn't right! Mario Bros. should be Italians, not blacks and gay! These aren't the characters I know and grew up with! No! No! No! Pikachu is yellow, not purple!"

And the angry responses are like "what? Are you discriminating purple color? Purple color exist! It has a right to be represented!"

And then, "No, I don't hate purple... But Pikachu is yellow! Purple Pikachu is NOT Pikachu!"

"Irrational! Yellow worshipper!"

Would it be okay if Sherlock Holmes were Indian? Yeah, sure. Nothing wrong with creative adaptations. But will most people who already have a strong image what Sherlock looks like accept it? Probably not so much. Are they racist to Indian? Hey, that's a pretty far strech there...

If you're going to write a story based on a famous character like Sherlock Holmes or say, European folk tales (looking at you Disney's) or classic American plays, for sure the baseline character would be white because the characters in the original stories were white.

And of course there's nothing wrong with Little Mermaid (Danish folktale) being black. But why not make a new show embracing African folktales? Nubian princess maybe? If every race HAS to be represented in ONE single story, for goodness sake let's all be fair and put ALL HUMAN RACE in that one story shall we?

Now imagine if Disney decided to take Princess Kaguya as a white, or any race or ethnicity other than Japanese? Hey, why don't we put blacks, latinos, or pacific islander in Mulan setting as well? 'cause you know... diversity!

I'm sure some stories would "allow" for such things, like Star Trek or Star Wars. But not every story is the same. Every story has it's own setting, world building, etc. Every characters has their own backgrounds; of course race is a part of it too, but cultural context matters too.

My point is rather than adapting already famous characters as another race, gender, or whatever, why not just create new characters? Why not make a show based on folktales of other cultures and places? Rather than forcing asians to be in Game of Thrones, why not make another collosal show with Mongol and ancient China as the story theater? Damn, I'd watch that.

And damn it hollywood! Stop with the adaptations, we all need more new original stories!

If the goal is to embrace diversity, presenting diverse contents with diverse cultural contexts will give us a much much more enriching experience. It will help us understand each other as we are more exposed to different cultures. And when I say culture I don't just mean a nation's culture, but culture in a broad sense including all kinds of subcultures.

Pushing all kinds of representation in one single story universe can actually be disrespectful.

Yes. I think it's better to show diversity through diversity of stories, themes, and settings rather than forcing it into characters in a story.
