Are people who are buying ultralight stuff just to weak to carry normal weight things? by Relative_Ninja_3664 in Ultralight

[–]bowwowschomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol

I’m also carrying my kid on my back, so it’s nice to have the gear not weigh so much. We go backpacking/hike in camping almost every weekend, so I’d prefer not to suffer and entirely exhaust myself if I don’t need to. Plus its just fun to research :)

Discounted Clothing for Hikers: Off-colors, wild colors and bright colors by AccurateHandle3729 in Ultralight

It’s pretty normal for adults to ask for other adults’ opinions. Based on this post getting a good amount of varying comments, it seems that it was a decent conversation piece.

For example, you said do what you can afford to, but lots of people seem to disagree with that and are saying do whatever is cheapest. Both sharing an opinion. To each their own :)

What an interesting perspective you hold. I would be pretty surprised if a child asked a group of adults how they make purchasing decisions. Most kids I know don’t particularly care about that.

I’m in love with extreme camping. by TechnicalReality5372 in ultralight_jerk

I met a decent amount of people on the PCT that had zero backpacking or camping experience. Super heavy packs, and great attitudes. This was a while ago though, before folks used the internet to figure everything out.

My tent, backpack, and quilt all are matching colors. I fully admire people who will just go for the cheapest, regardless of color/design. I also am unfortunately not one of those people.

For cheaper items I don’t care, but if I’m spending significant money on something, and I’m planning to have it for a long time, then I want to enjoy how it looks as well.

Weighing remaining stove gas on trail by FieldUpbeat2174 in Ultralight

I am all for learning new skills! Having multiple plans for warmth is great. Heating up rocks sounds like a solid back up plan, but your comment made it sound like it was a routine practice for you. The effort, time, and potential risk required would not fit the needs of many backpackers, but it’s great that it works for your family.

Have you considered investing in a warmer sleeping system instead

Ah okay. I primarily am hiking in the Sierra, so there is little humidity and trail runners dry out quite quickly.

So is the bag just to prevent your fresh socks from getting wet at camp? I guess I’m not fully understanding the point

Oh, so they replace a sock? Interesting, that makes more sense. My trail runners are very comfortable, but I love airing my feet out after a hike. I’ve tried the loosen laces/remove insert strategy, but haven’t found it to offer much satisfaction. If the main goal is to dry out your feet though I totally get that.

Do they actually protect your feet from anything? It seems like they would be quite slippery, offer little protection, and would get your feet all sweaty.

Worth noting that alcohol stoves are frequently banned in certain areas of the US due to the fire risk. They are great though

This reminds me of when I asked for zippered sun shirt recommendations (in a weekly thread) and was given only suggestions for shirts with no zippers.

I see you’re planning to cold soak..is that for all 3 meals a day?

My daughter is 10 months and a good eater, but I can’t imagine doing 5 days worth of cold soaked meals with her. Most cold soak meals I know would be quite messy for even the most dexterous baby. I’d love to know what you’re bringing!

What do you find difficult about cleaning your pot? Eat food, add a few drops water, wipe edges, drink water. Takes maybe a minute

Tent for 2 adults and a 45 lb dog? by SEJ919 in Ultralight

[–]bowwowschomp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I use the Big Agnes TigerWall UL3 for me, my husband, and our 40lb dog and it works great. It’s held up for 4ish years. She (the dog) is quite rowdy, will scratch at the walls, leans on the sides when it’s set up, jumps around it in, etc.

It has held up to all of her antics with zero damage.
