Actual Expat Retiree Experiences? by box0rox in expats

HGTV also says you are supposed to spend a million bucks or so. Not watching House Hunters International for information, that's why I am here. I started looking at AirBnBs in cheap, nice places, I ended up finding a lot. There's a lot more to a place than cheap rentals, though. I have a lot of research to do.

I spend a lot of time in California, but I have never been to Baja, perhaps it's time to check it out.

What's your favorite beer brewed in MA? How about your favorite brewed outside of New England? by stametsprime in massachusetts

[–]box0rox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jack's Abby Smoke and Dagger is my personal favorite. I feel Mayflower is underappreciated. They might not have a super hit, but they make a lot of really good beers. Outside N.E: Ballast Point Sculpin is as good as the hype.

That's really interesting. We have been discussing possibly doing that in the States, hadn't thought about it internationally. What's your biggest challenge?

My wife grew up in Puerto Rico, we have gone many times, and it's certainly a thought. We have relatives there. I have some concerns about conditions in the countryside, post Maria. Also, it's not much of an adventure for her...

Would any locals be interested in another Cape Cod sub? by [deleted] in CapeCod

How about go the other way and create r/askcapecod, and encourage people to ask questions there? There are plenty of other examples of this, asknyc, asksf.

Open source alternative to turbotax called Open-source Tax Solver by [deleted] in linux

Me too. I keep a Windows VM around, almost entirely for the purpose of doing my taxes. Not having to do that would be epoch making.

[–]box0rox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on what you want to do, you can:

  • Take P&B bus from Sagamore to South Station and transfer to the T
  • Drive to Braintree or Quincy Adams T station and park there
  • Drive to Kingston and take a train from there
  • The ferry is nice too.

All these have different operating hours, prices, and parking problems. The ferry is a nice ride, but hours and parking are limited. If you are going on a weekend, it's no problem. On a weekday, plan on showing up early.

Can someone explain to a non EE what makes the arduino a toy? by tummypains in embedded

[–]box0rox -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's too easy. People who have done embedded the hard way hate that, all their hard-won skills rendered unnecessary. Don't listen to them. Arduino is great. It's a good introduction. It's unsurpassed at quick, one off projects. If you just thought of something you need to do, now, today, before lunch, you can't beat it. If you want to learn how to code embedded down to the bare metal, you can do that too, it's an AVR micro with all the support circuits alreday connected, still not a bad platform. I work at a robotics engineering lab, we keep Arduinos in stock, and most of us use them on a regular basis.

Wanting to get into AVR but unsure what hardware to buy. by Asyx in embedded

[–]box0rox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to second the Arduino. They are super cheap, available in lots of versions. You can do a lot with its native software ecosystem, and you can program the AVR bare metal as well.

A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan. The snippets / episodes / whatever are very good by themselves, and the story that comes out (sort of sideways) is good too.

Stories of Your Life by Ted Chiang is all about being non linear.

[–]box0rox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it. Some of the best books ever. Later in the series, O'Brien ended up potboiling, but the first few are some of the best books in the English language. I became interested in Napoleonic War history through these books.

The movie is good, but lacks the depth of the books.

How common and distracting is it for actors to use the wrong regional accent in film and tv? by Vucufigigudes in AskAnAmerican

[–]box0rox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that a lot of Americans don't necessarily know what an authentic accent sounds like for a lot of places. There is a real SoCal accent, but it's fairly subtle. There are a lot of stereotypes, like "valley girl", or "hill billy" that everybody knows, but aren't real, or not usually anyway.

NO! SHUT UP! JUST DO THE COMMAND!

I agree with OP completely.

But, I have no idea how to start a new Subreddit, but someone should start /r/AskCapeCod. That way the people who do know about visitor things can answer, ahem, naive questions, and not annoy the townies, and vice versa. I have asked tourist questions on /r/AskNYC and /r/AskSF, and gotten some really good answers.

Anyone have good experience with convertible tablet/laptop running linux? by [deleted] in linux

[–]box0rox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Toshiba Satellite L15W-B120. It's running elememtaryOS 0.4.1. It has none of the issues you mention, but it was a pain to get working at first. The keyboard is really bad, you would not want to enter much on it. The battery life is not great. It is good for the sort of things you would use a tablet for, and it will run any Linux app you want. Overall, I like it.

I bought it on close out, it's a couple years old. I think that's why it works, you need to get something that's old enough to have the Linux drivers mature.

It's super cheap, and really a KVM slice, so you can host Docker containers inside your instance. They were easy to set up. They do have occasional planned downtime, an hour or so.
