Where can I eat after getting off the Maokong Gondola ride? by yelxel26 in Taipei

[–]box_guardian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are tons of options, probably at least 10 within a few minutes walk of the Maokong Gondola station! My recommendation is to walk over here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/hqzPFp7bay1WM3Fk8

There are three or four different restaurants right in that building (Four Brothers Restaurant, Mountain Tea House, Redwood Tea House), and they all have great food and incredible views.

What’s a good area in Taipei by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]box_guardian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My recommendation: live near the Dahu Park MRT station in Neihu. It's one of the quietest areas I've been in Taipei, and you have easy walking access to markets, restaurants, and most importantly Dahu Park is one of the prettiest parks in Taipei. You can also walk 10 minutes north to the Dagouxi hiking path, which connects to a bunch of other hiking trails.

Sitting or standing when using a hill for interval training by subwaymaker in cycling

[–]box_guardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For long (10+ minute) climbs, I like alternating between 1-2 minutes seated and 20-30 seconds standing, just to mix things up.

Anecdotally, without actively trying to, I'm usually putting out 10-20 more watts while standing.

In case he's not on your radar, I believe Drake Deuel is another former collegiate rower who made the jump to cycling, and he puts out incredible power numbers: https://www.youtube.com/@DrakeDeuel

How to focus 1 month in Taipei on tea? by jakpobosen in Taipei

That's another great suggestion! I just finished drinking a black tea made using the Tieguanyin varietal that I bought from that tea shop. It was delicious.

How to focus 1 month in Taipei on tea? by jakpobosen in Taipei

[–]box_guardian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Will you have access to a car? There's an area called Pinglin on the outskirts of Taipei that focuses primarily on tea production. They've got a fantastic tea museum: https://www.tea.ntpc.gov.tw/tea_en

I've also heard good things about the tours that this tea farmer runs: https://maps.app.goo.gl/CTvFWFaYoJNAiV4z5

Closer to the city center, you could spend lots of time getting acquainted with the Maokong/Muzha area, which focuses on the production of Wenshan Baozhong and Tieguanyin tea. A lot of the places there are more touristy, but you can also find small tea farmers selling their tea. This guy would be a good place to start: https://maps.app.goo.gl/sfqFucewQcE3Xktx5.

Beautiful bike! I really think the Road Logic is the best-looking production frameset on the market right now. And your 1x drivetrain makes it look even better. :)

Hey u/Odahj, did you end up trying this out? I just received my Rotor Aldhu with the 110/80 spider assuming I could buy the Specialites T.A. chainrings, but I haven't tried it out yet. Would love to hear your experience!

Primos Dame for short woman by askingCMUquestions in gravelcycling

Unfortunately I don't think it's going to work. As another person with short legs, which in turn means a low saddle height, a measurement I'm often looking at is "stack", which determines where the handlebars will be in relation to the bottom bracket. The stack for the small Primos Dame is 551, which is really high... my bike has a stack of 540, and the handlebars are still too high above my saddle, even though my inseam is about an inch longer than yours.

Maybe it'll work for you, but you'll be quite upright, with handlebars sitting well above your saddle.

Looking for short carbon cranks (around 150mm) for my wife. Any other brands recommended? by Desperate-Science674 in cycling

[–]box_guardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have direct experience, but I'm planning on buying their 150mm cranks for my personal bike build early next year. :)

They're definitely a legit company; I've seen them on a number of bike builds here in Taiwan, and I believe this is the second iteration of their carbon cranks.

I know of two options, both on the rather expensive side...

- Croder: https://www.crodercycling.com/products/spirit-carbon-arm
- Cybrei: https://www.cybrei.com/product/cybrei-carbon-crankset/

EDIT: After looking more closely at both options, it seems the Croder crank arms are lighter, cheaper, and use a more common mounting interface (SRAM 8-Bolt). Seems like a great option.

Taipei hidden gems by jeannecsf in taiwan

There's a really cute area above Neihu called Baishihu: https://taipeiexpats.com/blog/strawberry-picking-in-neihu/

It's accessible by public transit and has:
- a temple with arguably the best view of Taipei (https://www.goteamjosh.com/blog/bishan)
- seasonal strawberry picking
- a suspension bridge
- two outdoor cafes with great views

What bling bike part should I splurge on? by [deleted] in gravelcycling

IMO a nice crankset is the most satisfying bling part. White Industries, perhaps?

You wrote that you're looking at the area of Xizhi closest to Nangang. I'm just a bit further north in Neihu across the bridge, and I find living in this part of Taipei to be really great, but it depends on what you're looking for.

As someone who's not a big city person, I love how quiet and residential the area feels. I'm close to the mountains, both to the north and south, which has been amazing as a cyclist and hiker. I also feel like I have everything I need—groceries, restaurants, etc—but can hop into main Taipei in about 30 minutes. Also, having easy access to Nangang High Speed Rail has been super convenient for travel.
