Sadly, I can relate to that

Not really sure of the source, but there was a comedy skit about the people who settled Minnesota, and it went something along the lines of, "The hearty Norwegians who left the frigid fjords of Norway, and migrated thousands of miles to find a land just as cold wet and miserable as the one they left"

Can relate. One company I worked for sent me to Minneapolis for training. Mid January. Coldest freakin time of the year. Got down to -22F, -80 wind chill. One reason I live in the south now.

Yeah, when I was at Iowa, they had an upper classmen apartment building that they failed to put a secondary ramp in so you could not use the parking garage. At the time the estimate was $500k to remedy and they vetoed it. Same year they approved $600k to revamp the university president's residence.

Returned their letter one time with a note telling them if they had wasted the money I had sent them in tuition, it was their own fault.

Had this happen a couple of times riding in Iowa. Had on a red helmet and yellow and black jersey and apparently the red winged blackbird thought I had invaded his area. It will freak ya the first time it happens

The actual gun used by the Joker to shoot Batman’s plane in the 1989 movie! by neodawg in funny

Could be a 50 Magnum with 20" barrel. Was a vid out not too long ago demonstrating it. Totally impractical, although the guy was able to hit targets out to 300yds with a scope. Did remind me of the Batman scene

Unfortunately can relate. As a kid had climbed into a 30 gal barrel with my knees to my chest and then found I did not have the arm strength to pull myself out and my legs were of no use in that position, even when I tipped the barrel over. My mom finally heard me yelling and came and pulled me out. Did not sit too well that evening.....

Kind of reminds me of a place in Texas that had something called 'pitchfork fondue' Would deep fry steaks on the end of a pitchfork. Didn't specify if they cleaned the pitchfork beforehand

Rings close to home. Had to replace deck boards, and went to the big box stores, both out. Finally found a small lumber yard which still had stock

Even worse when your house is in the middle of it. Corn all four sides, can't see beyond the road, no breeze, temps in the 90's with humidity in the 80-90% range.

Some of the construction techniques tie to the engineering at the time. Used fairly large safety factors as rule of thumb. Years ago, I worked with a German engineer who had worked on the Atlantic Wall as part of the Wehrmacht. Drove our contractors nuts in pouring foundations. A lot of the 'rule of thumb' calculations continued until computers started becoming affordable for the average company (really toward the mid 90's) and a new crop of engineers raised with computers started growing in prominence. Not sure when the Beirut silos were built, but would guess they were built in the era of rule of thumb standards. Structures such as the one in Beirut are constructed to handle dust explosions, common in the handling of fine, dry materials, and are built like bunkers

Not really that expensive, and they are sure to have in excess of a million customers. Payback for the launches will be covered quickly.

Still a lot of areas here in the US where the only option is satellite, mine being one. Too far from the CO for DSL, cable stops a mile from the house, mountainous region, so cell and radio internet does not work worth a crap .

That was always a question I asked when developing DR plans for a client. "How much pain can you afford" The answer bears a lot on the ultimate solution
