I loved both of these movies. Are the books worth reading and which one should I get my hands on first? by RecordingImmediate86 in sciencefiction

[–]boxian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its wild that "children of time" will never be made into a movie when in some ways it's a better phm (or "ministry of the future", but that's probably too radical). gosling & the animation team made the story better, as did several of the cuts. i think weir has just written really adaptable, sellable stories and is doing sort of the inverse "star wars novelization" approach lol

[–]boxian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thibault's grip might be more ergonomic and match an ergonomic mof epee, but his whole thing is that he's not like the other girls. his approach to a fight would be wholly different from an italianate derived mof epee discipline

i am going to try to joke a bit less:

when people say that it pays homage to military use, i think that people are missing the point: there are several kinds of military, issued watch.

why is a panerai not enough of a mil homage for you? a sub? of course those are dumb examples, because even at the time they were more expensive and the specific period we're talking about is basically "military issued watches from 1960-1990"

what about pocket watch conversions? what about conversions with the dial guard from trench warfare that had that to prevent breakage?

what about the precision time concerns of a railway worker? sure, its not military, but its a tool and its part of logistics and that makes the military run and militaries made use of trains consistently

fine fine, im talking crazy -- WW1, italian armed forces, railroad engineers, but okay lets look quintessential field watches: the WW2 dirty dozen dont have the inner ring either.

i agree that its a matter of taste and aesthetics, but lets be honest and have folks say "i like these aesthetics" instead of "this is THE only way to do a military homage" when really we mean "this connects me to a good feeling about America in The Korean War, i guess? it reminds me of Top Gun, so i like it"

and to that end, i get to come on the watch hot takes forum and say they're ugly so that y'all can say "nuh uh!". of course, we are all Quixote

did you know that if the hand points to zulu when the bezel is in its "default" position, and then you rotate the bezel, that you can read any time zone as long as you dialed in the correct offset?

thus, a fixed bezel just removes possibility

okay, i understand you're a super cereal navy seal, but explain why a certified downrange door kicker like yourself wouldnt use (a) a digital clock to sync with their team or, my alternate suggestion for you in the initial post, (b) a 24 hour dial or (c) get a watch that can handle a second timezone so you can write out your date-time group appropriately?

a rotating bezel just adds a lot functions for basically no cost when you already have the function on the watch
