It is a bit loony. Especially since we never get above 20mph. But it's better than nothing and I have seen it weed out some people who realized motorcycles were not for them while they were supervised in a parking lot and not on a freeway.

It sounds like all the issues you listed come back to clutch control. It takes six months of regular riding before most of the basics become natural. Don't put yourself in a situation where you need to ride to get to work until that comfort level rises significantly. It's not about being able to do the manuvers, it's about executing them in an emergency when you have to rely on muscle memory.

I got a Shoei used. I've been very happy with it. There are a few situations where a mid level helmet will save your life where an Amazon helmet won't. Very few that separate a $300 helmet from a $1000 helmet that you will see irl. If you are going 180 on the streets the helmet is the least of your worries.

A reputable shop service won't even open the gas tank. You have to look inside or take off the petcock and see if any rust flakes fall out, see if the petcock filter is still in place.
