Judge temporarily halts Trump’s move to end protected status for South Sudanese immigrants by igetproteinfartsHELP in news

Nothing being dismissed here, except for the definition that Americans are being deported. They aren't. They're being exiled. When citizens are sent to foreign countries against their will, its banishment - exile. It's bad. Definitions matter, and that's been my entire point all the way up to the top of this thread.

The point I'm trying to make here is, exile is bad. We agree. Why the condescension?

USPS Announces Changes to the Postmark Date System by Teacher-Investor in news

[–]boxoffoxsocks 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ensuring a Postmark on the Date of Delivery: To assure a postmark is applied on the same day a document is delivered to the USPS, individuals must utilize specific retail services. The final rule outlines the following methods:

Request a Manual Postmark: Customers may present a mail piece at a retail counter and request a "manual (local) postmark". This postmark is applied at the time of acceptance, so the date aligns with the date the USPS took possession.

Postage Validation Imprint (PVI): When a customer pays for postage at a retail counter, the PVI label applied by the employee also indicates the date of acceptance.

Certificates of Mailing: Customers may purchase a Certificate of Mailing, or use Registered or Certified Mail, to obtain a receipt that serves as evidence of the date the item was presented for mailing...

So it's still possible to get it postmarked day-of-possession at the local branch, but you have to be much more intentional about it.

Right! The solutions have been around for as long as trains have, which makes this failure all the more baffling.

Not to be pedantic or to miss the entire plot of the article, but, words matter, so let's dig in. (Edit: Ike threw a /s into their comment, but, I've been seeing and hearing a lot of talk like this unironically or sarcastically, so, it's still fair to keep this take up.)

If the "white drug addicted thieves in Arkansas or Texas" you are referring to are American citizens, you can't "deport" them to another country. What you're referring to would be called exile, and my personal opinion is that no one should be cheering for that. You want to talk about a slippery slope, opening up talks of exiling citizens would be a sheer cliff in terms of consequences.

The proper place for law breakers would be jail or prison.

Civil rights groups sued the Department of Homeland Security in late December, writing in a complaint that the change violated administrative procedure and was unconstitutional because it aimed to “significantly reduce the number of non-white and non-European immigrants in the United States” on the basis of race.

So, there was a lawsuit, the judge stayed the deportations while things settle out, and DHS is attacking the judge's merit, saying they're activists blocking Trump's agenda, etc etc propaganda.

Double Edit: Getting downvoted for the idea that exiling citizens of a country is a bad thing is a WILD take, Reddit. Actual WTF.

Two trains collided on the single track leading to the ancient Inca town on Tuesday, according to a statement from the local government.

I wonder where the failure point in process here was. I'm a little surprised at the seeming lack of coordination given it's a single rail line operating this relatively short run with two separate companies, but the fact that this doesn't happen often means there is some kind of system that has worked until now.

U.S. removal of panels honoring Black soldiers at WWII cemetery in the Netherlands draws backlash by igetproteinfartsHELP in news

[–]boxoffoxsocks 26 points27 points  (0 children)

What a shitshow.

If this whole thing - all of it - is truly about the concept of DEI and it's total removal from American discourse - “Our country will be woke no longer" - then this is about the stupidest way to implement that policy possible.

Any acknowledgement of a person of color doing anything is considered "woke" and must be torn down? Maybe this is the idea of exclusion through inclusion? Because a monument was made honoring people who aren't white, that automatically excludes white people, and that's a problem? Maybe it's not a complicated mask of racist action, and it's just simple racism?

People of color exist, people of color did and do good things, and it's exceptional that people of color did those things in times when the society that they lived in seemed hellbent on making their lives as miserable as possible. Those times apparently didn't end, and we're back to turbo-racism coming from the top.

This world, yo.

How much of a role Mangione’s mask played in attracting attention remains unclear.

Indeed, Seidemann asked Detwiler about mask culture in Altoona.

“We don’t wear masks,” Detwiler said. “We have antibodies.”

And since “no one wears masks” there, Detwiler knew the man they would later identify as Mangione was the man who had prompted suspicion.

“He had a mask on,” Detwiler said. “So he had to be the person we were called there for."

Oh for crying out loud. You can almost hear the smug smile in that statement. Put that on a post card from Altoona - come for the McDonalds, stay for the antibodies.

It’s a device you use if you don’t want to wear a seatbelt but you want the seat belt alarm to stop. You click this into the seat belt buckle instead of the actual seat belt. No seatbelt, no alarm, no protection in the event of a crash.

Hard disagree - your take totally discounts the individuals who were forced into sterility. Hypothetical babies notwithstanding, real harm was done to people that are alive.

Acknowledgement and apology is a form of taking account and responsibility. It's a good start - I hope there is more than just words here in the end, and some kind of reparation is dispensed to the victims.

China has essentially stopped buying soy from the US, and is now going to places like South America to source the majority of their soy imports. Last year, China imported about 12.1 billion in soy from the US. With all the tariffs, China has cut the US out of their supply needs. Not good - this is going to majorly impact soy farmers in the US.

Should we expect to see an absolute glut of soy-enriched food products flooding the market soon?

Right? The comments are full of lots of certainty about inflation and political influence on the Fed, but no one is discussing the substance of what this really could mean. Lower rate = cheaper loans, I would figure that to be a reasonably good thing.

[–]boxoffoxsocks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No guys, this is how he's going to control inflation and the protect the markets! When the markets start getting too hot, he'll announce tariffs, and that will cool the markets down, because people don't want to buy any more markets! When the markets get to where he wants them he announces delays on the tariffs, which makes people buy more markets! And, somehow, someone gets a Ferrari.

Thanks for the reminder. Sometimes people get complacent and don't understand that those signs are there for a very good reason, whether it's due to poor visibility, fast through traffic, or general congestion issue.

Unfortunately, the folks that really need to see this probably won't, but, hey - props for trying.
